My favourites based on real performance are -

Habana, Le Roux, De Villiers, Etzebeth, Bismarck/Strauss and Labuschagne - the latter statistically and factually proven to be by far the best loosie in Super 15 this year of all competing teams.

All Blacks :  Carter, Ben Smith, Cane

British Lions : Halfpenny

Rooinek, some awesome selections there, bro. You just need to add Richie McCaw and Dan Carter to the current players and remove the thug Bismark, then add Colin Meads Michael Jones and Willie John McBride to the all time players and it's the list of a real rugby connoisseur!

Ka Mate, I forgot Sir Colin Meads, he's in! Richie McCaw is a great player no doubt but he just isn't one of my personal favourites.
I considered Michael Jones as well as other great AB loosies like Graeme Mourie, Kevin Eveleigh and Josh Kronfeld. They're all great players but not among my personal favourites. If I was going to include them in a list of all-time greats I'd have to add the likes of Jan Boland Coetzee, Jean Pierre Rives and Rob Louw. I've just remembered Jan Ellis! He's one of the all-time greats I'd include who is also one of my favourites. I'm editing him in along with Meads.

Dave, JP Pietersen is a current player who I'd have to include as one of my favourites. I'm just a bit annoyed he's decided to give the Japs some of his best years . . . but I'm adding him to my list!
Francois Hougaard would have made my list before the Oscar Pistorius murder but he lost the plot after that and just doesn' t look the same player.

Agreed Hougaard has lost some of his mojo but was starting to look his old self before the injury. We need him back to his best next year, hopefully a full S15 will be the tonic.

Agreed on JP, we need him back playing for the Boks......I thought his contract allowed him to play at some point?

All time favourite Bok player for me is Danie Gerber...without peer as a centre. Most exciting AB was Christian Cullen. Every time he touched the ball you knew something was going to happen!

These are just players that flash through the grey matter...a good and interesting post by my colleagues...one thing I really love about rugby (or any other sport for that matter) is to dig up the archives...provided we do not suffer from altzhiemers (sic) it's a rather lovely past...I know it  is a sentimentalist subject, but like me and so many others like Ol' Maaik (and so is Mozzie) but rugby archives are interesting today....I always loved rugby...never really good at it but I was priviledged to go to school in my youth that bred great rugby players ( 2 WC winning Flyhalfs) and played rugby at the same school amongst those who became exceptional. I humbly say, what a priviledge...a school that tutored nice people and good citizens...taught us that vanity and pride is a useless pursuit in life unless it has unselfish motives...based on comradeship of the strife...the Boer War...we had boys at this school that were Dutch and English and were friends wayback in the start of 1900...because of political differences their lives were torn apart...the English against the Boers.

When they left to do their duty they agreed to identify each other by wearing a red band around their clothing or uniform...simply because a college boy does not shoot another...makes a mockery of war doesn't it??

Sorry off topic...but it's amazing how one's mind drifts sometimes.

Rooinek

Going back a bit - I think you left out Jannie Engelbrecht.   He was regarded at the time as the greatest wing ever - and in the tour to New Zealand he was so good that a Maori family named a son after him.   When he was Springbok Manager on a visit to New Zealand he spent some time with the family.

I saw him scoring two tries with a broken collar bone in a CC final in Pretoria that decided the match in favour of the  WP.
