Federer struggles through...

Playing at a much lower standard than Wimbledon after his recent back problems.....Fed was nervous and out of synch in the evening match. Tiafoe a youngster took him.to 5 sets......this US Open is anybody's to win. Hopefully Roger will build through the tournament, but thus far Zverev, Nadal and Fed, the top 3 seeds, have really struggled against nothing opposition. It looks like a wild ride.

Zverev and Nadal went through in three sets and not really struggled to win.  Zverev is only 20 years old and his mind went absent at times.  Nadal struggled in the first set and thereafter won the second and third sets 6-2 and 6-2 - would not call that struggling.  
The other player who did not complete his game due to rain was Dominic Thiem from Austria.   Was leading easily when the rain came.    

 Its early days and Federer will be better after  sets.  He has to be slightly rusty. That youngster Tiafoe was no pushover he can play.Zverev  appears to be the top seed in his half of the draw so certainly there are many openings with   of the top ten not playing.
Go Federer one hopes to see you send ou Rafa crashing! 

Beeno - hope so - but bear in mind he was injured and oolder players take longer to recover than younger ones.

Sure he lost in four sets - but winning in three sets does not mean he struggled in round 1,  As per normal with you the BS flows freely,

You were going on not only about Zverev and also Nadal - the latter was an outright lie which is what everyone normally expect from you.

 What a cool guy Fed is.....yesterday on his off day, rather than seeking a private court....he practices at the Central Park public courts. And after a few minutes all the other 19 courts are empty, everybody is watching Fed. What a kick for the kids to suddenly see the greatest of all time on the courts with them.

And Fed struggles again against the admirable Youzny....hard to say where he is at this point.

Youzny  is way past it and has not won anything in years so if Federer struggled against him it is clear that he is going out soon.
If he played Daniel yesterday he would have lost in three sets.     

But I doubt Daniel would have beaten him tonight.....LMAOFY!

 Yes he would have - his opponents thus far has been sub-standard - Youzny (35) and Lopez 35) have not won anything in years and has not been competitive for years now.
But then they are suitable opponents according to our local age maniac.   LMAO!!!!!!

He usually bounces back with a straight sets demolition job ... not this time though.

They should have reseeded when Murray went out and made it a final....as it is Nadal has an easy match but Fed has a resurgent Del Potro to deal play. In the last two sets Thiem had about 30% of the court to work with....anything else Delpo scooped up on his monster forehand.

And Fed is dispatched by Delpo, who served magnificently. It wasn't a great game Federer's game plan was surprisingly to try to penetrate the Delpo forehand. ... That didn't work and Fed made plenty of mistakes.....double faults on break points, a horribly botched overhead and stunning volley miss at 30 all in the last game. Most crucially on set point in the 3rd set tie breaker, on the first serve he hit a 3/4 speed slice serve right to the Delpo forehand, which was promptly destroyed. .. He was not on song. But a lot of that had to do with Delpo whose monster forehand eliminates two thirds of the court, leaving the opponent to squueze his shots into the other third. One wonders what this guy would have accomplished without the wrist injury.
