JOHANNESBURG - Under-pressure Springbok coach Allister Coetzee names his first squad of the year on Tuesday for a three-Test home series against France during June.

The 53-year-old had a calamitous first season in charge with eight losses in 12 Tests, an unwanted calendar year record for the two-time world champions.


Although Coetzee has a four-year contract up to the 2019 Rugby World Cup, there has been speculation that a series loss to France would trigger his sacking.



OVERSEAS PLAYERS

Sections of the media have hinted at recalls for a number of experienced players discarded after a third-place finish at the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

These include the Du Plessis brothers, hooker Bismarck and tighthead prop Jannie, No 8 Duane Vermeulen and winger Bryan Habana, all based in France.

Others linked to possible call-ups are winger JP Pietersen, centre Francois Steyn and winger-cum-scrum-half Francois Hougaard.

VETERANS

A bad habit of numerous Springbok coaches has been choosing players well past their prime with the justification being that they provide experience.

Johannesburg daily The Star has questioned the wisdom of considering 33-year-old Bismarck du Plessis, once rated the best hooker in the world.

Picking him would be looking after the present, argued the newspaper, when the emphasis should be on the 2019 World Cup in Japan.

FLY-HALF

A major cause of the disastrous 2016 campaign was the poor form of fly-half Elton Jantjies, both in general play and as a goal-kicker.

No one could initially fault Coetzee for choosing the 26-year-old as he had an outstanding Super Rugby season, only to flop at Test level.

But injuries to Handre Pollard and Patrick Lambie and sending 2017 Super Rugby star Curwin Bosch to the U-20 World Cup mean Jantjies is set to face France.

SCRUM-HALF

Faf de Klerk has lost the form that made him a regular starter last season and no South African Super Rugby scrum-half has stood out.

Uncapped Ross Cronje, who succeeded De Klerk during this season as first choice at Golden Lions, has been the pick of a steady rather than spectacular group.

England-based Hougaard boasts experience and form if Coetzee looks abroad while other locals in contention include Rudy Paige and Shaun Venter.

CAPTAINCY

While Coetzee deserved most of the media criticism he received last season, then skipper and hooker Adriaan Strauss proved an equally poor leader.

Many pundits questioned why the now retired Test captain was in the team, never mind captaining it.

Who succeeds him could come down to a choice between two No 8s – Vermeulen of Toulon and consistently successful Golden Lions skipper Warren Whiteley.



Going forward t here is no sense in investing in over the hill overseas players.

 There is no way that overseas player assessments could be done and the selection of those players can be done only based on reputation and the fact is that they play for different clubs with different game approaches,  
To select the overage "veterans" would be a continuation of the Myer approach - which ended up in disaster during the 2014 EOYT and subsequently.   Those club players brought back by Coetzee were poor in the 2016 tests and to continue with them are  looking for further  disastrous  problems in future.

Denny using overseas players, over the hill or not, depends on the style we want to play. A younger player like Willemse could be in the mix, but not if we intend to push the Lions playing style.....if we do that our overseas players will be even more out of sync than non Lions domestic players

One of the few instances where I agree with you,   There is no equalized playing style between clubs and to bring in club players would result in playing chaos and a totally absent game plan.
Last year all foreign based players - with the exception of Goosen who scored two tries and assisted in two more - were substandard and that is likely to happen with the other overseas players again.  
I think the only player who would fit in with a ball-in-hand game is likely to be Le Roux.

 Moz, the question is, what pattern of play is clueless Coetzee going to adopt? For a start he knows nothing about ball in hand running rugby aka the Lions and Kings so I don't see him massaging that style of play. If he did he'd have to choose a side that lends itself to a pattern of play with which they're familiar. But if he brings in overseas players you'd have a scenario whereby players have different cultures...they simply won't be in sync and then we'll once again suffer the same confusion from the players as last year.
Frans, Habana and the likes are done, team 2017 has got zip chance of winning the WC 2019  going forward preparation should commence for WC 2023 minus Coetzee.

I'd select a team of combinations, leaning to towards Lions players with  three or four Kings players and the balance to be made up by the other franchises. At WC 2023 we'd have some experienced players.

I hear rumours that if the Boks lose the series against the French, Coetzee may be out. Unfortunately, the French have also not had a good time of it lately, so their sh!tness may be Coetzee's lifeline.

Funny how so many talented teams were selected in the past from an assortment of franchises ... each with it's own style of play ... each with a different game plan ... each with a different coach ... who has different ideas ... and yet from this diversity, success was achieved.

The Bok's failure has nothing to do with any club game plan and the supposed confusion it brings. Chaos doesn't come from there and anyone who says it does is ignorant and without understanding. Right, Comrade?

The coach in charge of each team dictates terms or at least he's supposed to.

The test team coach brings different players together ...  each from a different back ground ... each influenced by a different coach ... and from this diversity he moulds them into a team ... with a single purpose ... playing according to how he wants it. HE decides the game plan, not the club from where the players came from.

If each player were allowed to carry on with the game plan he had at club level then obviously there would be chaos ... and any coach who allows this isn't fit for office.

Are you listening, Comrade?

Forget about copying anyone style. As head coach you should have a style of your own. As a successful coach you should have perfected that style over the years ... or as near as dammit ... and trying to copy another will never bring about the same standard of perfection or success as it would if you had gone with your own style.

Coetzee doesn't have a style. As Dennysen said, he knows nothing about ball in hand running rugby ... so why force him? In fact he knows very little about rugby as a whole.

As long as Coetzee runs the show with his usual ignorance we'll be humiliated ... no matter the players he brings in. Everything revolves around the coach and currently we have a disaster at the helm.

 While I hope for the best outcome for the Boks I'm expecting the worst until the Boks have a half decent coach. We can debate personal selections until hell freezes over and hollimolli someone might even pick a dream team but it all comes to zip while clueless holds the reins. For now I'm just happy to read the board and enjoy differences of opinion .Cricket will be here shortly.....a more than suffice distraction.
