Fleck to ask Jones for help; Planet Rugby

Stormers boss Robbie Fleck is keen to tap into England coach Eddie Jones’ rugby knowledge to help with his development as a coach.

Fleck made the revelation after his side suffered a humiliating 60-21 defeat to the Chiefs in their Super Rugby quarter-final on Saturday.

He took over the coaching role at the Stormers on an interim basis when Jones stepped down to take over the reins at England, just a fortnight after being unveiled in Cape Town late last year.

Fleck, who came into the Stormers job with no experience as a head coach, is keen to continue in his role but it remains to be seen if that will be the case.

“I’ve still got to knuckle that down with the director of rugby and the CEO in terms of my position,” he said after the match.

“The way I would like to see it is that I’ll go on some work experience. I’d like to go and visit Eddie (Jones) overseas and several other coaches and try and close that gap.

“For me it’s all about trying to get as much information and learn as much as I can before the next campaign.

“It’s just about now getting our players over this one and looking forward to that challenge next season.”

 He had no experience as head coach and it showed, so now he's going to ask Eddie Jones and others for help. This article will reignite some debate on this forum.

 That must be very comforting for the SA National coach...........

 The SA National coach is useless as a source for help.   When Coetzee was the backline coach for the Springboks in 2007 - White called up Eddie Jones to deal with backline problems.   When Coetzee was head coach of the Stormers - Fleck was his assistant coach and spent his coaching career with him as assistant coach of the Storners backline.  At least Fleck realizes that with Coetzee he would get nowhere fast.  Give him credit for that.     

  So, was fleck bullsh!tting when he gave: "..... Coetzee his full backing as the new Springbok coach - an announcement that seems imminent...."?

We have an idiot coaching the Goats and another at the Stormers, Kings, Bulls, Cheetahs and Sharks ... but hey all's good with SA rugby ...

 CC is right - we have not gotten out of the mediocrity stakes insofar as coach selection is concerned.   Other than Ackerman the best coach we have is Franco Smith  of the Cheetahs - he is doing well taking into account the meagre resources at his disposal.   Gold and Fleck - and to a lesser extent Marais - are all nonentities in senior  coaching positions.  The Kings is not worth discussing.   And our national coach is a joke in bad taste.

We aren't really spoilt for choice when it comes to coaches now, are we?

 We can get real coaches from all over the world - but would not consider it ad keep to the stampkar local coaches.  Why?  

 Hopefully this is the bottom & common sense will prevail so that SA rugby can get back on track. The desire for profit may yet come to the rescue & for profit to prevail you have to have a good product. We will see. 
As far as the RC goes you still have good players & kickoff is still a ways away.

Thanks for the sympathy JW but that ship has sailed. They will pick the same lumbering morons because Coetzee will be too afraid to do a u-turn now. We struggle to beat Oz in the championship and then go north and lose at the end of the year. For my money Coetzee should cut his losses dump the dead weight of those "experienced players such as Strauss, Beast and co and actually start fresh, using Lions players as the back bone of the side and forcing others to play their way into the team through performances next year and not on reputation and experience from years ago. But yeah, won't happen. Why? Because the more experience you have the more liability you can mitigate. It's fking politics not rugby and coaches care more about their next job and saving what face they can. Real men are scarce these days. And yes, Meyer is still partially to blame because he left players out of the WC that should blatantly have been there and could by now have a good few years under their belt. He left them out for the same reason...to mitigate liability in case there selection didn't come off. Instead he chose to lose to Japan with outdated strategies and overrated players. It's suck being a a South African rugby fan. Morons permeate this country.
