In a twist that reads more like a soap opera than a sports saga, Jerome Bosviel, the seasoned flyhalf for Montauban, has come clean about his gambling woes. The revelation that he pilfered the team’s holiday kitty—earmarked for a sun-soaked Ibiza getaway after a fairy-tale season—has certainly stirred the pot in the rugby world.

Bosviel’s confession came after Montauban clinched the Pro D2 title in June, a victory that should have been the prelude to celebration rather than a scandal. The players had been squirreling away funds for a team celebration in Ibiza, a plan that fell apart when it was disclosed that Bosviel had been diverting these funds to feed his gambling addiction throughout the 2024-25 season.

“I fell into gambling, poker and PMU,”

Bosviel admitted.

His addiction had become a clandestine activity, hidden from those closest to him.

“I hid it from everyone close to me. I felt ashamed. I am the eldest of the siblings, I’m a father, I didn’t want to talk about it. When I came to rugby, I didn’t think about it. But once I was outside, I locked myself away in it,”

he shared.

The withdrawals started at the season's onset, with Bosviel meticulously noting each unauthorized transaction. “I wrote down everything I took in a notebook so I could then replenish the account,” he explained, emphasizing his intention to repay every penny.

After the Pro D2 final, the flyhalf faced his teammates, revealing his misdeeds in a squad meeting. “On the Monday, there was a meeting with the whole squad. I admitted to them for the first time what I had done,” Bosviel recounted. The admission was a shock to his teammates, many of whom felt betrayed.

Despite the turmoil, Bosviel has made restitution, repaying more than what he took, and his focus now is solely on rugby. He has played as the first-choice flyhalf in four of Montauban’s six Top 14 matches this season. His journey from pariah back to pivotal player is underway, but the road to redemption is never short in the court of public opinion.

For now, Jerome Bosviel’s tale serves as a cautionary reminder of the pitfalls that can besiege even the most seasoned athletes off the field.
