Former All Black says Etzebeth ‘deserved’ to be bitten

03 Sep 2013

Former All Blacks prop Richard Loe says Eben Etzebeth deserved to be bitten by Leonardo Senatore in Mendoza.

Loe, who himself had a reputation as a very dirty player, wrote in the New Zealand Herald that he does not believe the Pumas are premeditated exponents of foul play, despite the Pumas No 8 receiving a nine-week ban for biting Etzebeth, and flank Pablo Matera being cleared of eye-gouging Francois Louw (due to a lack of evidence).

'I wouldn’t have too many worries about them [the Pumas] coming here with a plan to deliberately unsettle the All Blacks with acts of foul play ... I just don’t see them as that type of side, contrary to what happened in Mendoza,' wrote Loe.

'In the case of Senatore, I thought that Eben Etzebeth kind of got what he deserved for slamming his forearm into the Puma No 8’s face. The incident was not in my view a case of the player deliberately setting out to bite – it wasn’t like the time Johan le Roux bit Sean Fitzpatrick’s ear – so I wouldn’t read too much into it.'

The All Blacks play the Pumas in Hamilton on Saturday.

one can be hardly surprised to read such a comment from loe, right up there as one of the dirtiest players to ever play the game.

i hope the folks here know that loes opinon is in the clear minority.

i can understand senorates reaction, especially after lady elizabeth slammed him to the ground while choking his neck, but treating lady elizabeths arm like a big mac is not the way to go.

lady elizabeths reaction to the bite is how u react to something of that nature in that scenario, cos ultimately it was the pumas poor discipline which cost them that match.

Sasuke its fucking rugby not a democraticv election. Whn Loe said deserved I think he was taken out of context and I think he knows why he said deserved. Just like Cowan deserved to be headbutted by Botha.

But in todays game its not on but back then it was folk lore. Loe was speaking more with a view when he still played when beating each other up first then play rugby was considered warm up

Spooony: I agree, it was taken out of context and yes, it referred to a time when players kept each other in check by taking the law into their own hands if the ref didn't do something about violations. Man those rucks were rough back then.

In the case of the Argie bitter, I think he had a brain fart and just lost it. He should have been punished and was.
