Francois Steyn's performance for the Sharks today has to be the most inept performance I've seen by a Sharks player since Epi Taione back in 2008.

Thank goodness this useless lump of lard is off to Japan soon! How many times did this self-serving buffoon have to kick a restart out on the full or miss touch with a penalty before someone else took over the kicking?

To think there were some half-wits calling for Fatty Steyn to be the Springbok flyhalf!

Waaaaaaaaahahahahahaha!

I suppose I have to say well done to the Brumbies because they did win the game after all, but I reckon the Sharks would have won that game comfortably if they'd had Patrick Lambie, Tim Swiel or Fred Zeilinga in the #10 jersey.

Oh and hard luck Lions! It was terrible luck that the 50/50 try at the base of the upright wasn't given because it would have been a simple conversion to win the game and then when they did score they scored on the touch-line. Even then I though the ref would have been justified in allowing Elton Jantjies to have a second crack it at after the Highlanders charged him early. Unlucky!

Sharks definitely would have won with L ambie playing.
Even the nz oak Mitchell says the try against the post was a try. Thenz commentators said there should have been another kick given to Jantjes. Bent reffing cost the Lions big time. Campo also says there should have been a second kick. I also didnt appreciate Jackson.

Two games down the tubes.

Fuck off to Japan Frans Steyn.
Very quickly becoming the worst back line player in this comp and its only his name and reputation that sees him make the team each week. He is a mere shell of the player he once was and had the potential to be. He is the only reason we didnt win tonight.

Jordaan is a better 13 as well. The Sharks backline needs a rejig. Reinach, Sweil, Esterhuizen, Jordaan, JP, Ndungane, Mvovo looks more promising to me?

Let me be more explicit.  Last year Plumtree saw that Steyn was a poor center and after the fourth game he put Steyn on the bench and said he intended to use him as full back in future.   He was forced to bring Steyn back for two games at 13 due to Jordaan's injury.
White was much more patient than Plumtree and since the Sharks won most of their early matches the position was not as critical as it was under Plumtree.   Steyn this year was shit poor - whether he played at center or flyhalf.   I do not think that White's patience with him will last much longer.  He may rejig the backline and play Steyn at full back - but that will likely also fail.   The FATSO is too slow for that position.

oh and the lions being down 23 points at ht diddnt contribute to the end result, its all the refs fault and his special powers, hes so good even tho hes not even playing hes playing! Time to let go of this "bent" refs, ref screwed up but refs screw up all the time, theyre human, doesent mean its all predetermined all fixed just means ref mad. An error of judgement. But Sa teams in the past hv wan due to bad reffing, its not just Nz or Oz teams. End of the day Ref cnt make you kick, pass, accumulate points thats up to the players. Re Steyn wl Sharks did lose because of him, he missed three penalties, that wld of made it 18-16 Sharks. But saying you dont like Jackson now just because you dnt like the result, doesebt mean theirs bad reffing.

Frans Steyn performance was more than shocking today.
With clevermikes comment I have to agree with , his performance was 'KAK" at best.
The Sharks need to score try's which then have not been doing thus far this season.
Second time Jake White has been out thought and shown up thus far this season.
Disappointing performance all round.

This thread is a classic case of limited observation.  Steyn  had his best general game of the S15  at flyhalf  today....his issue was his  penalty and restart kicking. The stats bear this out, Frans out gained any other SA flyhalf by more than 40 metres.

I accept that you are totally deluded and cannot see anything.  The stats said something that can easily be explained.   The shit he produced is a fact.  He "out gained any other SA flyhalf by more the; 40 meters".
Now how did he gain that magnificent distance achievement annd did it make a positive contribution to the game?
The answer is easy -
*   Steyn made an aimless kick down the center of the field;
*   He fell back to cover the return  kick and when it came, he caught the ball and ran about 10 meters and make another aimless kick down the middle of the field;
*  the process is repeated again and again
The whole process is totally non-productive - it never once occurred that Steyn attacked the gain and made any positive progress in the process.  So forget about the so-called meters gained - it was non-productive and useless theoretical gain that represented nothing positive for the Sharks.
Look at the rest and all that it showed is utter bullshit.  To be quite frank - if you cannot see that he  is no flyhalf - then please admit that you are the rugby moron that anyone already know you are.

Oom  you totally missed his metres gained didn't you? Now you are pretending it came from punt returns. Nope old chap, he was very solid ball in hand...made a clean break and beat two defender and offloaded 3 times. He took the ball well into heavy traffic. His kicking was awful and he more or less lost the game as a result, but his general flyhalf play was solid.  Try to open your eyes and see the whole picture. Here is your weak link in general play:

just one question 0- have you actually watched the game?  Why not accept that all saw what actually happened?
Poor Jordaan received shit hospital passes from Steyn and had to try and deal with that.   But lets look at the stats again:-
Steyn0/0917/8/178612325/00/000/0

Steyn handled the ball 42 times - of those he kicked away aimlessly 17 balls - followed by a sequence of kicks which ultimately resulted in a negative for the Sharks.
Steyn must at least be "congratulated"  -  he made his first line this year break today - but what happened then.   He crashballed 3 meters further and the team lost possession of the ball.

His kicking was atrocious - so 70% of his game was atrocious.   He is NOT a flyhalf and he is not a center.   He was the main reason why for the whole season the abckline of the Sharks misfired.
Plumtree was right - he is bloody useless as a center and to even think of playing him at flyhalf is an impossibility.

Wrong, he did plenty of good things in the game..apart from his tackling and ball in hand efforts...look at the high ball where Kuridrani knocked himself silly trying to tackle Steyn. Frans took the ball and bounced off a tackle which would have flattened most players.

Last week you wrote a whole book about how good Steyn was and it is the same this week.   Don't you get it - the man is NOT a flyhalf - and his one poor two individual efforts means nothing at all,  since it effectively caused no real benefit for the Sharks at all.   His constant bugger-ups caused havoc for the Sharks though.  They lost possession of the ball and territory.  The Brumbies try was the ultimate result of one of his bugger-ups.
He in fact is clueless ar flyhalf - and that is a fact.

The whole Sharks kicking game was poor. Mvovo was totally out gained  by Mogg, the wings were poor. The Sharks were convinced that Mogg was a weakness, and mostly  he is. But today he wasn't. The back three out kicked Steyn  26 to 17, a lot of the issues reside there. Mogg returned it 21 times with interest.

Since when is kicking the only function of a flyhalf?   Steyn' s kicking was poor and the fact that the back three was no better is not s consolation.  They were not the backline pivot - Steyn was.

You still did not get it - now do you?  That 60% more meters were meaningless - since none of those meters were gained in attacking play involving Steyn.   He made 70- meters of those when he fell back to collect kicks - run a number of meters and made another aimless kick straight at the opposing catcher.
In the context of the game that type of meter gains is really bullshit and detrimental.I look at the rest of his game and that was putrid.
Do you still think he deserves to be Springbok flyhalf?

I see what Moz is saying. When the dust settles, maybe we can all sit down and look at the game of Fransie in more detail but right now, I am yet to talk to a person who thinks Frans had a good game and Facebook news feed from Durbs friends was riddled with remarks about how poor Steyn was.My initial take after watching the game only once (live on tv) was that Frans is a prick! Then again, I am a very emotional supporter and get very vocal in front of the tv to the point where I wana break shit. Thats how frustrating the Sharks have become. You can bet your bottom dollar that we will not go 5 phases with out dropping the ball if it includes being passed to 2 or 3 people in a movement!
Kiwi and Aussie teams and Cheetahs do it with ease!! They make throwing the ball around look safe. We make a simple 10 to 12 pass end in my clinching my toes and gritting my teeth!! Thats a shit Sharks attack and if we get through on default, we will not win this tournament. Jake needs to do something and quick!
Has Jake over coached this team?? He perhaps needs to bring Eddie Jones back into the fray ala 2007 when our backs had a bit of idea on attack. We never see any trickery through our backs or little inside passes! The way we attack is no different to how an under 14 school team is taught to line up through the backs.Absolutely no skill. We need a rugby league coach to come in and help with out backs because those okes have some flair and trickery when they run it on 4th or 5th tackle!
I have just received my Sharks jersey all the way from the Shark Cage in Durban, sorted my accommodation and tickets out for Christchurch this weekend to go and watch us kick the ball to Dagg all day!! So bummed. The following week I will sit in the cold again and watch them kick it on to whoever the Blues play at Fullback..Thank fuck its not Piutau! These guys are no Jesse Mogg!!

Sasuke, do you know why Fat Fransie kicked all those restarts out on the full, why he didn't find touch with those penalties and why he's forever embarrassing himself with those long range drop kick misses?

It's all about his pathetic ego and his fixation with trying to show everyone how far he can kick the ball. Trying for too much height on the restarts, too much distance on the penalty touch-finders and forever trying to be the match-winning glory-boy with the drop kicks.

For Fat Fransie, it's all about Fat Fransie and screw the team. "Look how far I kan laaik to kick it" is all that's ever going through his tiny brain.

@rooy,

the intensity of ur blog is something akin to my blogs on mark hammet, LMAO,

franns was shocking, but im still a fan of his, i still rmemeber like it was yesterday how devastating those long power kicks of his was against the All Blacks in 09.

but i am at a loss to explain that performance, it would be disappointing if ego did play a role.

i never thought frans was a flyhaklf anyway, he was always a 12 or fullback, though im no longer sure about his credentials at 15 after that debacle.

he has a chance to redeem himself this weekend against the crusaders, i wouoldnt rule out not seeing frans at 10, white might justify it by saying the sharks only lost by 7 and that was despite playing like poo.
a 10% improvment might not change the outcome which will be favouring the crusaders, but it could give a much needed morale boost to the sharks.

lambies absence has been felt big time, but where is tim sweil, i thought he was dependable if not special in his few games to date.

I have to agree with you - it is an ego trip that has gone overboard.  His continuous ball hogging is the same -  "see how strong I am -I can carry balls against all defenders".  Never mind the outcome of the ball carries - whether the Sharks lose possession or the backline is neutralized - does not count, it is all about Francois Steyn.
It is all very evident in his performances throughout the series - whether he okays at center or flyhalf.   Overlaps are neutralized and his rare passing of balls to players outside of him, as well as the poor quality of some of those passes  is notorious.
He in fact is the main reason for the malfunctioning of the Sharks backline.

I keep saying Frans is no 10 and he confirmed that again on the weekend.....he had a few good moments with ball in hand, but his kicking out of hand was piss poor.

Frans does not have the instincts of a 10. The only position for Frans is 12.......but Jake has of course missed a beat by not bringing Esterhuizen into the equation......the Sharks started the season well, but have dipped and the intro of Esterhuizen would have reignited their challenge.

The Sharks miss some fire - Esterhuizen could have been the answer. Jake should also have stuck with Swiel at 10 and brought young Peet Marais into the lock equation instead of wasting Alberts at lock.

Jake is starting to let it slip

I do know for sure one thing - Steyn is no flyhalf, but is he a center?   His performance at 12 this year was generally poor and one thing is for sure - he made absolutely sure that the players outside of him get only scraps insofar as passing f balls to thenm are concerned,   They never get more than 20% of the balls passed to him - so whomsoever plays outside of him cannot perform at all.
I agree with you about playing Esterhuizen at 12.   He won't be released from the UWC squad to play for the Sharks.   If they want to play Steyn at all cos ts - he could perhaps play at full back.

I have no issue with Frans as 12 for the Sharks this year, but playing him at 10 has always been a mistake.......Jake has missed a beat by pathetically discarding the talented Swiel.......but his biggest miss is leaving out Esterhuizen........hell he should have had him playing off the bench weeks ago.

With all due respect - the Sharks backline also misfired with Steyn at 12.  Steyn was basically the reason for that as well.   He was at 12 a real problem, because he hogged balls and passed about 20% of the balls he received to other players.  Of those some were to forwards and players inside of him  - so the 13 and outside backs had to live off scraps and could not perform.
That remains a problem - Steyn basically under-performed badly at 12 as well.
By the way - did you see the match report on their 3rd game against Argentina.  I posted it  lower down.  Although they won - and Esterhuizen scored one of the tries - it seems as if they under-performed.   Looks like they did not hav their strongest combination this time around.
