A week after a bunch of silly fools like RooiAAS and the OOM wrote off Frans Steyn....this happens:

10 Francois Steyn (Sharks): Tough to keep out Bernard Foley here but the enormity of Steyn's performance given the circumstances in Christchurch deserves praise. Down to 14-men for 50 minutes, Steyn kicked ten points, provided a brilliant assist and beat three defenders in a gritty outing.

Spot on by these Rugger experts. It required huge self belief and involvement from Frans to win this game. He remains somewhat of a mixed bag , but the passion and physical talent are there to see. Narrow minded thinking has deprived us of his talents at 10...it's a damn shame.This TOW goes along with his Rugby 365 TOW also at 10.

Scraping the barrel here - he was not even mentioned in the Rugby365 squad you always love to quote.   Why can you not open your own eyes and look objec tively at matches without having to rely on what journalists says about matches and players?

 Mike, just a question boet..
Who had to dig deeper..
Frans Steyn, playing against the in form team in the comp right now, in Christchurch, the team has won this comp more times than any other. He has no insurance from his 2 loosies as they have been carded. His team is up against it as they have never won at this ground ever and they do not have a particularly good record against the opposition.
Bernard Foley, chucking the ball around at home against one of the weakest teams in the comp. Its a bit of a rout to be fair.
We all know Foley looked better but who do you think had a sterner test?? Which win do you think came harder??
After you answer that question, we will ask you to open your eyes and look objectively at matches..You just hate Frans Steyn and it pains you to say any different..

 For some reason South Africans have a kind of schadenfreude in reverse syndrome.....it's not so much that they enjoy the troubles of others, as they hate the success of some others.  Jan Pickard, Jannie Engelbrecht, Monty, Bobby Skinstad, Joe van Niekerk....now Fransie.....despised by a section of the South African public. It seems younger heroes can be a little unconventional, but older more familiar chaps, have to conform to a cookie cutter version of being a sportsman. And woe betide them if they should try to ply their trade overseas....all the locals who secretly hate themselves for not having the guts to try the big world come crashing down on them. You know who I mean.

Thanks for the melodrama - but I do not think it holds much water.  Heroes produce the goods on a continuous basis - not switch off most of the times.  The fact is that all the crying on your part is because I and some others do not rate Steyn's performances this season as acceptable and do not think that he should be in the Springbok team.
I have been high;y critical of Steyn's performances so I have chec
ked the stats again to see how he was doing:-
Center
Although  Steyn has switched from tcenter to flyhalf during games - I used his starting selection as the norm.

Lets look at the above objectively:-

*    The only try assist in 8 games came from a cross kick by him gathered by Ndungane for scoring of a try.   Positive  - unfortunately never repeated in later games.

*    Goal kicking  -  68% accurate.   Positive

*    Kicking game - a mixed bag with a minority being good and the rest aimless and inaccurate -   Average

*    Passing game -  tend to make ineffective and inaccurate passes, but his number of passes are too low compared to the number of ball possessions -  Below Average

*    Ball carries -  52 carries with 91 meters in territory gain - average  gain 1,75 meters per carry =  Below Average

*   Line Breaks  -  None -   Poor

*   Off Loads    -  Three in 8 games -  too few -  Average

*   Ball possession losses -  15  -  Poor

*   Tackles - Tackles made  56 - tackles missed 13 =  Missed tackle ratio 18,84% - Below Average

*   Penalties given away - 8  - Poor

Steyn had a good game to start off the season and most of his positives came from that game.   The rest of the games were noticeable by the malfunctioning of the backline of the Sharks - where most problems arose because he rarely passed balls to players outside of him and tend to hog balls resulting to ineffective carries.

Try Assist   -  Very Good

Goal kicking  =   Good

Kicking game =  A mixed bag - the majority of kicks were aimless and seriously defective =  Below Average

Passing game -  A mixed bag - passing at time inaccurate and ineffective - Average

Ball Carries =    25 carries - meters gained  102 average gain per carry 4.08 meters.  Average

Line Breaks =  1 made - number is below par - but the one actually made was Good

Defenders Beaten -  9  =  Good

Off-loads  -   3   =  Average

Possession losses =  9   Very Poor

Tackles  =  Tackles made 17 - tackles missed 11 = missed tackle ratio 39.28% - Very Poor

Penalties given away 1 =  Average

The problem is that his positive ball carries came from 2 carries in 2 games = the rest of his carries were ineffective.   The same applies to the defenders beaten = most were in the two carries mentioned.  A player to be selected for national duty should never have very poor ratings in any category.

Summary

Steyn's performance at center was inadequate and ineffective and contributed t the negative performance of the Sharks backline.   He was in fact totally ineffective as a center.

At flyhalf he showed positives in two cases - the rest of his performances was ineffective and in some ways very poor.   He is not a natural flyhalf and that remains a problem.

A hero is supposed to have no chinks in his armour - there are way too many chinks in Steyn's armour to qualify as a hero.   So keep up the cries and sentimentality, Mozart -  it does not work because the foundations are just not there.

Don't always be a bloody idiot.  I tried to make a fair assessment of Steyn's performances and gave him a lot of credit - maybe too much since the positives came in small doses - very few and far between.    You are  a fool not to react and analyse where i am wrong rather than to become personal and behave like a little girl who cannot have her own way.

Nah I think I'll stick with the experts who have given Frans two TOW awards in his games at 10....there is a lot of subjective stuff in your analysis Oom, and when you can't even admit Morne was involved in Habana's two tries, you don't have enough credibility to be subjective. You see eventually all the dishonesty destroys your status as a fair observer.

 What is personal stuff that is in the stats for games?  I did not place it there - ESPN did.   That is not personal stuff - but you refuse to accept FACTS.    Is a missed tackle ratio 38,7% acceptable - I do not think so.   The Sharks backline was sterile and scored a very few tries this year.
On Saturday the Sharks scored three tries - to his credit Steyn had a major share in one.   The other two tries Steyn had no involvement in - matter of fact the winning try would never have materialized if he was still on the field of play - since he is not athletic enough to do what Jordaan did.   He is too slow and clumsy for one thing.
As to Habana's tries there is one thing you do not recognize the moves started between the half line and 22 - not inside the 22 - with seconds away from half time. Morne was stupid and robotic to do what he did and it was not I who said so - Naas Botha nearly burst a blood vein because of the rank stupidity shown.
Incidentally before the game Meyer said he told Morn to pass balls and not kick possession away.   Morne is not capable to read games - so he must be told in advance what to do.   He is not capable to realize when a different approach is necessary as was the case there and buggered up the whole game because of that and his [putrid defence in the relevant game.
Steyn0/175/32/31501007/40/000/0        A missed tackle ratio of 36,36% - nearly as bad as Francois Steyn's tackle stats at flyhalf - and two tries were also scored because of his putrid tackling.  He had a massive part causing that  loss.  Fransie had the edge - he only fave away one try when he tried an Alberts Treeby tackle on Slade.

Earth to Oom, we had to score 4 tries, we had scored two tries up the left flank, Morne was right next to his captain who clearly wanted him to pass. Nobody could guess that JJ was so inept that he would run away from his support, charge into a sandwich tackle and not even place the ball well.
Morne bears no blame for that incident at all .....none. It's this sort of stinking bias, where you hitch bad outcomes to players who had no blame, that makes you a trivial board member.

Can Mprne never ever make up his own mind about anything?  Is that the reason why Stade Francais uses him on the bench?    Nobiody seems to think he is a person what can read games and that is a fact.
"Morne bears no blame for that incident at all .....none."   That according to two divergent opinions - Mozart said he is not to blame - Naas Botha says he is.  Who is correct in this case?
You blame Engelbrecht - but he was in possession when Morne should have kicked and the halftime siren would have sounded on the way to the line -out.
Start thinking before you write up things too cover and  excuse the bugger ups of Morne and your other hero Fransie.  Both would not make any franchise team in Super 15 in New Zealand and Australia - so why should they make the Springbok team as flyhalf?

What part of his captain was right next to him is too hard for you to grasp. I don't give a damn what Naas says....if Jean wanted the ball out he could has kicked it out himself. The team wanted to run the ball.....they were going for the TN win. Morne was executing team tactics.
As for Fransie or Morne  not making any Oz or NZ S15 team, that's subjective bs. But if they won't, nor will Lambie, Boshoff, Potgieter or Ebersohn. But oops, Ebersohn does...QED.

An inside center is next two a flyhalf all the time - and where did you get the idea that De Villiers told Morne to pass the ball in that case?  A bullshit assumption to get Morne off the hook.
Now lets take the issue of flyhalf selection in New Zealand and Australia.  Morne has no chance - he is a bench player for Stade Francais - has that not entered your mind ever?
In any event - New Zealand teams have the following flyhalfs:-
Blues - HickeyHurricanes -  BarrettHighlanders -  SoopoagaChiefs    -   CrudenCrusaders -  Slade
All those flyhalds are thinking players with a vastly better better performance record than the robotic Franois Steyn.
Australia is in a better position than SA as well.  They have the following as flyhalfs:-
Force  -   EbersohnWaratahs -  FoleyReds  -    CooperBrumbies - ToomuaRebels   -  Hegarty
None of the above are third or fourth choice flyhalfs like Francois Steyn is iro the Sharks.   Ebersohn has developed massively in Australia and one can see that in his game - anytime three times the flyhalf the Steyn's would ever be.            I am not saying Potgieter will make the grade in Australasia - Goosen and Lambie will. Reason - they are thinking players not robots.
