In fact the average age of the Bok starting team was 27.51, whereas the average age of the AB starters was 28.12.

Oldest players are (days expressed as a decimal of 365)

Victor 37.41

Mealamu 35.6

McCaw 33.77

Jean 33.62

Conrad Smith 33.0

The youngest players are

Pollard 20.58

Serfontein 21.5

Fekitoa 22.4

Etzebeth 22.9

Barrett  23.37

There are no AB forwards under 26, the Boks have 3 forwards under 25. The ABs had 3 of the 5 oldest players. The Boks had  3 of the 5 youngest players.

So we are considerably more youthful than the best team in rugby  and at 27.58 in perfect alignment for the RC which is won by teams 27 and older.

Surprised?

Not really, both have a good mix of youth and experience. Take Victor out Moz and your average may drop below the magic 27 required to win a world cup. May have to stick with him.

England had an average age of 30 when they wan the 2003 wc. So Age is just a number imo, performance should be the key criteria.

Is having Geriatrics necessary a bad thing? If they are performing. Richies 33 but he is in the form of his life, thats a fact regardless of what some may think here ahem. Like I said I think Age is overstated too much. If they are performing to the required level, why does it matter? Some pundits write off Matfeild. But to still be performing at his age to the required level, he deserves praise. He's still a liability for the boks haha, but he still gets around the park some times, and plays like a wing haha, just lacks the physicality required of a tight five in the modern game.

Here we go again.   Age has nothing to do with it - it is the level of performance that has everything to do with it.   We know that the AB's have a problem with hookers and that Mealamu is an enforced selection - because the cupboard is rather blank.   We know that Conrad Smith is a top performer - he proved it on Saturday again.   We know there are question marks as to De Villiers's defense and that he has not shown much in space creation and penetration this year.
We know that McCaw is still providing top class performances - even though he is less effectivethan he used to be - he still makes tackles, but his contribution to breakdown ball protection and recovery has gone down.   We know that Matfield still has postives in line-out takes - but his lack of physicality is a negative.
In the case of the SA players - is there an urget need for replacement and are there alternatives available?  in the case of De Villiers - it depends on whether the decline in performance this year - as compared to last year - continues  next year and there is a further downward slide in evvidence next year.   Viable alternatives are available.   Matfield - the sooner he is replaced the better - alternatives are available.
Mozart's thread deals with the situation of the starting line up only and he conveniently leaft out players like Jannie du Plessis.   He also advocates the replacements of younger players by Jacques Fourie, Fourie du Preez and Willem Alberts.   The sum-total is that by the time those players are included - the average age of players are above 30 and by nex year will be above 31.
Pollard is just over 20 years of age - not over 21 in any event.

You are right OOm the numbers are corrected slightly lowering the Bok average. But I'm afraid the arguments are all about age. At 37 supposedly Matfield can't dominate other forwards. Well hello....Matfield never dominated physically. He is more about stopping Tait in the RWC or Fekitoa last weekend, without which interventions we would likely have lost these crucial games.
But those who think through their age sensitive lenses can't even see what he is doing to win the match. Vermeulen aside we had no more effective forward against Oz and nZ.
Will he be as good next year? Who knows I never thought he could come back, but I'm maintaining an open mind.

Well by balanced do you mean by age? Or Level of performance, or consistency? Because NZ diddn't beat SA Three years in a row for nothing. I always thought Hansons selection criteria was more onto it then Meyer. SA may have more of a balanced. But Hanson bloods in Young players and fuses them with Experienced players. Looking at the current teams.
Dagg and Le Roux: Daggs more experienced
B Smith and Hendricks: B Smith is the more accomplished, and more versatile player. Hendricks is a finisher.
C Smith and J De Villiars: Both experienced players. Smith was excellent in the weekend. De Villiars was found wanting defensiely. Equal their
Savea and Habana: Savea is younger player. Both were good in the weekend. But as this is age vs youth. Habana is the more experienced.
Barratt and Pollard: Both young players, Barratt 23.37 and Pollard 21.58. Pretty much equal their
A Smith and Houggard: Pretty similar
Read and Vermulen: Pretty equal
Mccaw and Mohoje: Obviousley different. Mccaw older, Mohoje younger
Kaino and Coetzee: Close but Coetzee is the youngest
Whitelock and Matfeild: Matfeild is clearly the oldest
Retilluck and Estebeth: Both pretty similar
O Franks and Jannie: Similar
Coles and Strauss: Coles is younger
Crockett and The Beast: Beast is older
So both teams seem pretty balanced.

NZ do have an edge in experience, which is usually important in RWC. But we probably have enough experience...to a point where additional experience has diminishing returns. NZ has been similar to the Boks in that incumbency has a value. So Dagg played behind Mils, when he looked the better player. And Barrett clinched last years RC but still ended up behind  Aaron Cruden.
As I have been at pains to point out to some of our Saffa posters, the two countries have similar models. HM has given every player who had a realistic chance of succeeding in tests an opportunity, and if they continue to perform a chance to become incumbents. I guess that's a meritocracy.

The arguments are really not about age as you try to make it out as - the argument is about performance.   You take issues such as the Tait tackle 7 years ago and one on Fekitoa   on Saturday and made a wild claim that without those tackles we could have likely lost the crucial games.   Those are based on singe incidents durng games - not on overall performances.
If you talk about  those two incidents only - maybe you have a point.   But those two incidents came at a heavy price.   If Matfield was physically more dominant - what would the effect have been in the rest of the game?   That you leave out completely.
Take another example - for years you have been advocating selection of players like Morne Steyn and lately also Francois Steyn, based on one element of their performance - namely their kicking at goal.   You were prepared to sacrifice the functioning of the whole backline to get an advantage in goal kicking.   That Morne could win us matche with kicking at goal - has been your whole argument,   The counter that he was in fact damaging the team performance by neuralizing the performance of the backline as a whole was according to you never a consideration at all.   With Pollard in - you could see an immediate improvement in backline play and that was clear when you look at the backline performances now compared with what happened with Morne at flyhalf.
Now back to Matfeld - what impacted more on the games as a whole - the incidents mentioned or the lack of physicality displayed by Matfield in those games?   The fact that single incidents can influence game outcomes could potentially be true - but the counter is that it is not necessarily so.   Lets take the WC situation.   The fact that the Tate incident would have given the English 4 extra points still would leve them short by 5 points in that game.   We allowed the English forwards to determine the game pattern during substantial parts of that final and our backline showed vey little spark - so we had to win by kicking at goal - which we ultimately did.   If we had a stronger physical player at 5 - would that not overall have been more in our favour in the game as a whole?   The same applies to the recent games against Australia and New Zealand.   There can be no argument in those cases.  Matfield made some really major flwaws in the NZ games - which helped the NZ side wining the Wellington game and helped them in getting in the lead in the Ellis Park game- but that is conveninetly forgotten because he made a tackle on Fekitoa.
Anyway - this whole discussion is in a way theoretical as it centers on age and  on single incidents in games - not n overall contribution throughout those and for that matter other games.   Your following statement is questionable as well though:-
"But those who think through their age sensitive lenses can't even see what he is doing to win the match. Vermeulen aside we had no more effective forward against Oz and nZ."   That is again a rubbish assessment that cannot be substantiated.   I looked at the stats on ESPN for Matfield and a player you always made disparaging remarks about, namely Coetzee:

Matfield

0/1

0

0/18/21

24

56/9

23/2

0/3/38

57

0

5

2

4

55/4

0/0

2

0/0

Now lets look objectively at the above - which have two divergent issues, namely the fact that --
*   the figures reflect in the case of Matfield the line-out takes by him, without indicating line outs he lost on own throw (4); and
*   did not indicate the number of breakdown balls recoverd by Coetzee or wherre the oppositin was penalized forholding on because of Coetzee.
Leaving those aside lets - as well as the tryscoring issues which were more the result of team efforts than individual efforts - and look at other c rucial elements of the games:-
Ball Carries
Matfield  -    carries                 -    21               -   meters gained       -    24               -   average gain         -      1,1 meters
Coetzee  -   carries                  -    38               -   meters gained       -    57               -   average gain        -      1,5 meters
Beating defenders and off-loads - Matfield  - zero                                               -  Coetzee  -  5 + 2
Coetzee substantially more effective
Ball Losses
Matfield   -   2Coetzee   -   4
Matfield more effective
Tackling
Matfield    -   Tackles made         -   56                     Tackles missed       -     9                      Missed tackle ratio  -   13,84
Coetzee     -   Tackles made         -    55                      Tackles missed       -     4                      Missed tackle ratio  -    6,78
The above stats do not provide info on the qualiy of tackles made.  Coetzee was a much stronger tackler than Matfield - who even Mark Andrews said makes rather ineffective tackles.
Coetzee more effective
Penalties Given Away
Matfield   -    4Coetzee   -    2
Coetzee more effective
The above thoroughly negates your statement as quoted.   Really Mozart - you look at some elements and lose site of the whole picture.   Matfield overall performance was not that of the champion you give himself out to be.  `

Drop Matfiled and Bakkies and ou pa and I will be reasonably satisfied with things.
The return of injured players will significanly strenghen the match day 23.
Jean, Habana and Burger are then our older players and will as things stand now be useful to take to the RWC.
On the NH tour lets try Jan and Allende. Start Marcell. Have Etzebeth and Lood paired.Loosies - Coetzee, Vermuelen and Schalk. Give Reinach a start.

The difference with AB's is that they don't see any of their over 35's as starters unlike our ridiculous call on Matfield.

Mealamu is not seen as a starter, Coles is their regular starter only just back from injury.

Clueless Meyer woke up to discarding geriatrics like Steenkamp and Smith, but reality is, if he had his way, we would see Fourie, Pienaar and du Preez in the side and not to forget the return of Louw and Alberts.

The only older players the AB's lean on for now are reserve hookers, loosehead, the centres and McCaw......and lets face it these lads are hardly 35 and the AB's have youngsters on the bench to replace them like Fik, Crotty, Luatua, Cane and Moody

The problem stilli is that if you look at th AB set-up - there regular starting hooker - Coles included - they do not have geriatrics in their Tight 5 - where bodily strength is of over-riding importance.  They have McCaw amongst the forwards and the rest are backline players.   I cannot see any problems with McCaw and Conrad Smith from a performance perspective and am even prepared to overlook De Villiers's decline in performances this year. Backs normally last longerin thgame than forwards in any event.
However, to have a weaker physical player (Matfield) and a low work rate player (Botha) in your Tight 5 is looking for trouble.

Yep our geriatrics are shot, Mark Andrews summed Matfield up perfectly, Jannie is awful these days, a defensive liability and achieving at best parity in the scrums. Bakkies is a complete waste off the bench. We don't need these 3 at all........The Bok tightfive would be so much better with Willemse ahead of Matfield, Marcel ahead of Jannie and Lood ahead of Bakkies.......its so bloody obvious.

In the backs, Jean has clearly demonstrated he is no longer up to it. His poor defensive record, including those blundered rushes are costing us. He also adds nothing on attack other than the direct route........we would be far better served with Serfontein at 12 in his rightful position and investing long term in the likes of de Allende, JJ, v/Wyk or Stokkies at 13.

Habana looks shot as well. JP back and Senatla as the other wing would be the answer

Ironical. NZ supposedly have no geriatrics in their tight forwards....somebody should have told Mealamu. And that's a good thing supposedly....the only trouble is strength fails long after stamina and speed. So if you have older players, tight forward is the best spot. The winner of the Worlds Strongest Man is about 40 years old.
Inconvenient.

You cannot read without distorting anything - now cn you?     Mealamu started for the AB's because Cole - there regular hooker was injured and he came back from injury and was coming off the bench for a change.
You yourself said that Matfield was never a physical player - now you said the world's strongest man is a 40 year old - nothing to do wih rugby.   So when Matfield - never a physical player - stands accused of being below par physically that strongest man story is your only defense.    Something like 1 + 1 = 5 - very logical according to you.

Mealamu does not usually start for the AB's, Coles does but he is only just back from injury. The AB's have no depth at hooker hence the reliance on the old boys as back ups......I have no issue with that, just like we will be hanging on to Bismark and Strauss as we have no real contenders coming through at 2.

We cant say the same for lock in SA where we have young locks to burn, same can be said of tighthead, where Marcel and Malherbe have long surpassed Jannie. Same can be said of centre where there are many better than Jean these days.

We don't need any of our geriatrics in the side, they are selling us short

What case have you made?  I do not get the message of any case.   Is it something like ebcause Matfield is 37 - he is the strongest lock in the world?
You yourself earlier said he was not a physical player - so what strength does he really show?    No stong tackles - minimal ball carrying capacity - we have scrumming problems where strength is paramount - what really is there to show his strength?
Pace is pace - but is that really what is required from a lock?   Yes - if the lock hooneymoons in the abckline - that is a positive - otherwise not.
Stamina - I am not so sure - Matfield made line out mistakes toward the end of the game?  Is he tired by then?
So no case has been made for Matfield as a lock - matter of fact nothing has been proven and the impression remains that Mark Andrews is very enar to the mark  in his assessment.   He was not the only one who said that - other commentators and writers have come to the same conclusion.

Mark Andrews has never been a huge fan of Matfield. Two totally different players. Andrews far more physical, Matfield more skillful and a more successful player at the end of the day.
Andrews has always sand-bagged Matfield and was one of the most vocal opponents to his recent inclusion in the squad voicing doubts about his effectiveness and ability to keep up with the pace. He was wrong, and is now trying to save face.

Sharkbok - cool, I hadn't noticed that before. Overall, I thought Coetzee more than held his own but he needs to develop that aspect and it would probably make his running more effective.
Look at how effective Pollard was taking it to the line - All Blacks had been setup by years of Morne passes and kicks

It is a problem with our loosies - they rarely if ever passes balls.  Alberts has gone through the whole   Super 15 without passing balls ever, Louw and Vermeulen made few passes compared to the loosies of other countries.
The only ones who really have passing games of note is Burger, Daneel, Labuschagne, Whiteley and Carr - the others tend to do crashballing mainly - some more successfully than others.
I believe it depends on the ball handling skills of the players - and also their ability too read the game.    Some has it - others don't.
Even though Vermeulen is a magnificient player - passing of balls (and even catching same) froma pass is not his strongest point.
Maybe that aspect should recevie more attention in training.

So Saffex since Andrews is spot on -  you would agree with Andrews' take on Etzebeth ?

Sport24 asked: Victor Matfield will be 38 by the time the 2015 Rugby World Cup kicks off. Is good enough, old enough?

Mark Andrews:  The public have to remember that if said player is fulfilling the role the coach expects him to perform, well then he can play until he’s 40. While Victor has bossed the lineouts as expected on his return, I find it hard see him being physically effective at the age of 38 in a World Cup tournament. At that age you just can’t hit rucks, clean out and make offensive tackles as effectively as young players would do. The game today is just too physical, so he would be superhuman if he could. Victor’s lineout play and kick-off work is fantastic, but I do worry about his combination with Eben Etzebeth. Both players don’t make offensive tackles, hit rucks and neither of them are big ball-carriers. However, I believe our locks get away with it at the breakdown and on impact, as we possess highly-physical and hard-working back-rowers who perform the above duties.

And here we have the root cause for Andrews disdain of Matfield. He hasn't overcome the pain of being replaced by a younger face (Matfield?) and unappreciated by your mentor and young "flavour of the week" selector Straueli.

Sport24 asked: Tell us the real reason why you left SA to play for Newcastle Falcons in 2003.

Mark Andrews: Both the Sharks and Springboks told me that I had no more value to offer as a player. I was forced to further my career overseas and did not leave South African rugby out of my own free will. At that stage, Kevin Putt and Brian van Zyl believed that I had nothing left to offer the Sharks, and as far as the Springboks were concerned, Rudolf Straeuli felt the same way. It can be a ruthless environment. At the time, I was 29 years of age and told my days of adding value were over. But I came to accept it, as such is life and the nature of professional team sport. The reality is that players’ careers are often dependent upon the management and coaches in power at the time.

Etzebeth was fine and way better than Lomp. Matfield was  superb and changed our forward play from bumbling to purposeful. Andrews is biased.

Its erking when OOM and Vetsak keep coming back with the same rubbish, even though it's patently not true. Stop the bias chaps it's ignorant.

You are the biased fool here.   Why should Edwards be biased and you are not - what a load of rubbish.   I will tell you what is wrong with Etzebeth - he gets NO support from Matfield and has to do the hard grind on his own - hence the apparent downturn in his performance.
Matfield was superb in what - you b iased fool?

Hey Mike no need to call Moz a fool for not agreeing re wee matfiled. Some facts. Vladimir  Kotov was the oldest guy to win the Comrades - at the age of 46.
Stamina and strength last longer than pace and quick reactions. Hence 46 year old dont win the 100 meters sprints or Wimbledon or openen the batting for South africa.
We are desparately missing a lock partner for Etzebeth.  It's not on to dismiss Andrews valid comments re matfiled by saying he is biased. matfield is the papest lock ever to play for South Africa, nobody can refute that. I have asked many times over the years for oaks to nominate a papper lock that matfiled. No names have been put forward.
Coetzee does have a passing problem but I think you will see a change. The number of offloads for example in the team has risen markedly. Both Burger and Vermuelen can pass reasonably well.
Put Marcell at tighthead, Lood at lock with Etzebeth, Burger on for ou pa. Jan and Allende at center and give Reinach a start - just to see how he goes. Hougaard is playing very well but we need to see what Reinach can do.
Wouldn't mind van Wyk and Stokkies Hanekom touring.
