Meyer isn't a poor coach and his selections have been mixed, not awful. He did bring back Louw, he is giving Willie a chance......he has elevated Strauss. But face it, there is nothing innovative here. If you were going into a crucial RWC semi against Oz or NZ, we would have nothing up our sleeve. - White is different....he adapts....he surprises the opposition....he innovates. He won RWC07 with the whole of Bok rugby establishment against him. That strained relationships with senior players like Matfield. Imagine what he could do if the suits got behind him. - Remember that sour, miserable feeling you get when the Boks exit the RWC in the quarters or semis. If we want to avoid that feeling, a bold step needs to be taken. I really don't think Meyer can win the RWC.....few coaches have that extra gear. White has. We should appoint him as soon as contracts allow and get serious about winning RWC15.

Still want to see how Boks go under Meyer when at full strength.

Getting Jake back is probably a pipe dream - they might well have earmarked Allistair!!

HasBeen you see it time and again in sport.....some coaches just have the instinct to get results. Most of that is simply an extension of the players' beliefs. If they are convinced the coach has a plan, has it in hand....they execute with confidence and vigor. White has so much resume power at this stage, just appointing him would be worth 10 points in his first match. - The answer is obvious....it's staring us right in the face. We just have to act on the obvious....not get distracted with politics, the need to be fair or any other notion. - We have one of the best coaches of the last 20 years in his prime, dying to be called to action.....we should do it.

Moz I was wanting Meyer to have a fair shot. Last year it was so many players moving on, Morne's goal kicking implosion  and again injuries. This year terrible injuries and also players like Bekker and JP movong on. Honestly what coach would be delivering all that demanding fans want under these circimstances.

I would have no problem at all with Jake as coach but honestly dont believe SARFU will eat humble pie.  Things are not normal here in SA.  Decisions are not rational etc. Merit does not reign as a principle. It's a huge negative.

White will never coach SA again. He do not want to coach a team where there is interference in team selections and where team selection is not base on merit but the color of your skin. Also then there is the the Act that gives any minister sweeping powers to interfere with any sports team selection and change as he sees fit.

Much stranger things have happened in SA than White being recalled. I personally think this year's RC is going to be very challenging....that could be the catalyst. I see no other coach in SA that could lift our rugby in a two year frame and right now we are in an elevator going down.

The main reason we are having problems is injuries and players leaving. One has to factor that in.

No coach, could produce great rugby in the circumstances. Having appointed Meyer give him a fair shot. If the rugby being played by the end of the year with a decent player compliment is poor okay.

However I would count it  a miracle if SARFU asked Jake back. Are they big enough to do that?

Ag no Moz, we know Jake had a 26% win record in his year leading up to the WC and was saved by Eddie Jones at the WC. Last thing we need is a return of Jake. While I dont rate Meyer, I rate Jake even less. Thankfully the return of a coach at national level is not something that ever happens and it wont happen with Jake

Dave we aren't going to agree on this. I see a coach who was 3 minutes away from winning back to back TNs, whereas prior to that we hadn't had a sniff in since 98. Granted he had a poor 06, but that was when he was put in a coaching strait jacket, with a committee vetting his moves and silly stuff like his recall home to justify himself in the middle of an overseas tour. The players sensed this , and I'm not sure guys like Victor weren't under aberrant influences. _ But in 2007 he made the right moves with the team and the assistant coaches and brought home the cup. The technical play of the Brumbies is also very superior. The handling in that game against the Sharks was pure magic. _ So I think Jake is excellent, experienced and very credible and there is nobody else in RSA within shouting distance.

He seems to be a decent bloke and reasonably competent.....just not top 3. I'm afraid this year might be a struggle and then the fans will get restless. There is no obvious plan other than to just keep doing more of the same, and this year that seems even less likely to work.

The Meyer way is set in stone. There is no scope for a plan B. Part of that way is selecting players who fit. I suspect a player like Willie was a hard selection for him to make. My guess is his hand was forced to by external pressures. Meyer will persist with his plan and players no matter what.........and in the process he will take Bok rugby down with him.

The man is clearly out of touch at all levels

I have said it before and I will say it again..SA has never had a better coach than Jake White. I was not old enough to remember Kitch Christie but since I can remember, Jake has been head and tails above the rest. Him and Eddie should never have been let go.

Jake had to deal with political pressures everyday. What could have been had he been left to do his job like every other countries coaches in this world! No other country has to face the shit an SA coach does. Its bullshit and that is what is holding us back.

No coach in the world has a rugby brain like Jake in my opinion. AB's dont have the best coaches, they just have phenomenal players with awesome skillsets. Its a much easier task working with that and when every provincial team employs the same style of rugby as the kiwi teams and Aussie teams do. Kiwi's just do it better than the Aussies and thats why the Aussies teams are under performers in Super rugby. Thats why Aussie v AB's test are often more exciting thatn that of a Bok v AB. Its because they both play the same type of game, run from all over, but AB's just do it better with stronger, better players! Jake has put more structure in place with the Brumbies and look what a brilliantly balanced team they are now.

No two teams in SA play the same. Sharks have a great mix of forward play and backs(usually) and this makes them our most balanced team. Bulls are all about forward dominance. Stormers are defensively structured with almost no attack to speak of except counter. Cheetahs are helter skelter and it works now. Kings and Lions have kak players! Jake took all of that and made a championship team. He was the reason we enjoyed watching one of the best Bok centre pairings in JDV and Jaque Fourie for so many games. Remember, these guys were shifted from wing and fullback respectively. He built that team that went on to become core players for even the coach of today!

No matter what anyone says Jake is one of the best, if not the best coach in world rugby today. Fuck Jakes record, he was in a transformation period. He needed time. He needed years and we would have reaped the rewards. PDV had a great record against AB's. Does this mean he was a great coach?? See how deceiving stats can be.

As I said before, Jake and Eddie should have been given a 12 year contract. No involvement from the outside. Next 3 world cups are yours, the only request is that you make SA proud and I guarantee you, they would have!! How can you throw away a rugby brain like that.

I hear talk of Mallett..He was a prick man. He was like a Graham Henry. He had a championship team and great bunch of players that it had to click sometime! Hell, Henry still almost tripped at the final hurdle again! Same as Mallett. Minute he started trying his own thing instead of letting the team select itself, he crashed and burned!

Look if we are serious the answer is obvious....appoint  the guy who has the highest probability of winning. All the other stuff, giving Meyer a chance, finding a mythical coach who can do the job.....that's all an indulgence. It's not tough minded, it's not how winners think.

Cut through the clutter. White has proven with the Brumbies he can make it happen....proven he can win...using two different playing styles.

I want to win,  period. If we want to be fair, put together a lucrative severance package for Meyer.

Agree with Saffex I think many people are rather curious to see what type of pressure Heyneke gets compared to what other coaches have endured. It just seems as though every time someone questions a decision, or announcement made by Heyneke – all the Bulls fans take it as a personal attack on themselves/Bulls rugby/Heyneke’s honour etc. You guys have to chill a bit.

I think Meyer made a few mistakes early on when he showed too much favouritism towards his Bulls players but he seems to be improving on that score, so right now, I think Heyneke Meyer deserves an extended run and I wouldn't swap him for anyone.

If, however, Meyer had to start picking the likes of JacPot, Werner Kruger and Zane Kirchner again, then I'd want Nick Mallett as Bok coach without question. Naka Drotske would be my next choice after Meyer and Mallett and after that - in order - I'd probably look at the other S15 and CC coaches, followed by an overseas coach, local club coaches, schoolboy coaches, Pieter de Villiers, Mickey Mouse, Baboon-ou and, finally, if he was the last rugby coach on earth, I'd consider the self-important and opinionated wanker who couldn't even manage to win a game at home against the hapless Southern Kings on their first ever tour with his table-topping Brumbies team at odds of about 47-1 on!

I wouldn't say Meyer showed to much favourtism for bulls, I would say he wants to completely play the entire bulls team. The only guys that he included in the team were the guys on his radar that he wanted to recruit for the bulls.

I really think that Jake is a great Manager and gets the most from his squad and he knows how to plan ahead and get the most out of avarage players. He also knows how to change his game plan depending on what players he have.

I wonder if Hougaard would have been a better player under him rather than just to become a Dupreez clone. I think Meyer has a template for each player and that he either picks players that matches that template or forces them to change into those players. For me that is his biggest weekness.

He can do that at the bulls because he has the players from age group rugby and over time they fit quite well into his overall strategy. The bulls have become a more attacking team now that he has left.

The question we should ask, why not Ludeke, I know he had a bad run at the Lions but he has won 2 Super rugby titles. If all go's well he will have his third this year.

I think that with coaches such as Meyer, White, Mallett and Ludeke. We have some amazing tallent at our disposal but what pisses me off is that the Suits do not know how to make the most of them. No Mallet is just a commentator and White is making the Aussies stronger.

I'm trying real hard to give Meyer my support but he's making it very difficult for me to maintain it.

My faith in him will be severely tested if we're beaten by the Samoans this weekend and let's face it, his latest team announced a little earlier doesn't exactly fill me with confidence ... it smacks of stupidity.

One would swear he knows nothing about rugby the way he's carrying on.

We nearly lost to the Scots because of the wrong attitude. Writing them off prior to the match was foolish and unprofessional. The coach should have seen to it that we run on pumped, ready to destroy them but we went on with the attitude that all we needed to do was pitch up.

I would take Jake White or Nick Mallet in a heartbeat.

In fact Mickey Mouse is also starting to look like a better option.

Can provide any evidence on that? It seems some changed were forced due to injury. Vermaak and Basson were tampons this year. One week in 3 weeks out with injury. KSide Show Bob chucking off to France. We got the Bulls 10 center pairing and one wing as our backline. Forwards was Spoes Botha  and Kruger with Chilliboy on the bench. Scrumhalf Vermaak. Vermaak wasn't bothered with playing for Lions. Made the move to the Bulls did well couple of games and became a Springbok. Some players being doing well for couple of seasons and got ignored.

Four coaches have been mentioned, but only one has the capability to pull off the RWC .....and coincidentally has! Meyer is the next best option. He is totally linear in his thought process. His teams are almost entirely predictable. You wont lose by much with Meyer as your coach, but his ability to find unique tactics to win a crucial test is simply not there. He is the easiest guy for the opposition to read. - Mallett is now an established critic. He will rationalize his losses.....the Island backs are too big and fast, for example. He doesn't have the heart of a competitor. Once his Bok team started losing, he became a loser. And his tactics at RWC99 were one dimensional and vulnerable. - Drotske has done a superb job this year, if not in prior years. He has built his players, allowed Os a crucial role...developed skills and tactics. But his tactics are not test match tactics, certainly you can't imagine the Boks playing the ABs that way. More importantly Naka lacks gravitas, the Bok coaching job requires a lot of credibility, for some reason Naka simply doesn't have that kind of credibility. - There are others like Ludeke and Ackerman, but let's get serious. White is a superb coach, with contacts and credibility throughout the rugby world. He builds a broad coaching skill base and delegates appropriately. He represents the highest probability of a RWC15 success....I see no other coaches who are primed to win.

I rate White as something special. Chances of him coaching our national team is highly unlikely. The goverment won't allow him the opportunity.

I also rate Mallet as something special. How could I not. His record speaks for itself. He too will not coach the Bokke again. He has no interest in coaching anything South African.

Drotske to me is just not an option. I would never consider him nor useless Ludeke or Ackerman at this stage in time..

Please don't even think about throwing Coetzee into the mix.

It seems we have no option but to endure Meyer and his conservative approach.

Suddenly I'm not feeling to cheerful about Bok rugby. We have the talent but no one to lead us to world domination.

Its simple, if its between two previous coaches Mallett and Jake, Mallett  at 71% is better than Jake at 67%, there is no getting away from that fact.

Mallett is a rugby man through and through, when he opens his mouth it makes rugby sense. White never came accross as rugby smart, he always had to draw on others - look no further than Eddie Jones. Jake did not win a WC without the services of another national coach. Jake would not have achieved that alone and therein lies the difference

snapster part of being a good coach is getting competent assistants.

Why did the Brumbies employ him. How come the brumbies have done so well? He has to be a decent coach. The Baby boks won a wc whilst he was coach. Where has he failed. You conveniently ignore the fact that Jake had built a very strong side and post WC would have won a lot of tests.

A coach is judged on what he can deliver, not what those around him offer. White was piss poor in the year leading up to the WC, his record was 24%. He should have been sacked. He did nothing regarding players other than select the obvious. He was shocking when it came to selecting the extended squad. Look no further than Albert v/d Bergh.

The Brumbies have achieved nothing under Jake, they did not make the top 6 last year.

Saffex You are as always one-dimensional in your outlook - and that remains a fact of life. You never realize that Mallett has always been a big talker - but the question remains what has he implemented on his own that is really noteworthy and credible. He took over an established well-functioning team under very credible captaincy and for 18 months used that team to reach very good results. However, his conduct as a coach let to the destruction of his relationship with Teichmann. This in fact resulted from his conduct during training period - which was reportedly characterised by cursing and poor relationship between him and the majority of players loyal to the captain and not their foulmouthed coach. The fact that the captain and coach was barely on speaking terms led to the obvious - he had to get rid of Teichmann but then did not communicate his decision in a discussion of the issue even over the phone - Teichman learnt from a newspaper report of his dismissal as a captain. Then followed a macabre joke. He then appointed Skinstad as captain. The latter was carrying some injuries which resulted in him not being able to be the captain in 1999. There was then an approach made to another player - I cannot recollect his name - but that also failed and he fell back on Joost van der Westhuizen as captain for the 1999 WC. His campaign was not all that bright - the initial indications were not really optimistic that he Springboks would get anywhere, He ten went in with the one-dimensional Jannie de Beer into the game against the English team and De Beer had an extra-ordinary day with drop kicks and virtually on his own beat the English. When he tried the same trick against the Aussies in the semi-final this strategy failed and what was ironic that the game was actually won by a drop kick from virtually the half-way line by Larkham. What I cannot understand about your arguments is that you support Mallett - whose key selection as a pivot was De Beer- one of the most one-dimensional flyhalfs ever - yet you criticize Mayer for sticking with the one-dimensional Morne Steyn. However, the fiasco really started when Mallettt had to start making changes to the team he inherited in 1997. All the changes he tried were really a fiasco and early in the 2000 test series the results - bar a win against the Italians in the Durban test was very poor. Incidentally in 2000 Italian Rigby was largely financed and supported by an Italian Engineer operating in SA - who earlier funded Rob Louw who played rugby in Italy in the 1980's. This Engineer gave a dinner party in Durban on the Sunday after the game - to which I was invited and I heard from them that they did not have a full team as a result of injuries to key players. After that his selections really took a turn for the worse and the following tests were one disaster after another. The writing was on the wall that Mallett would be fired and he used the ticket story as a reason for resigning before he could be fired for incompetence. The other issue raised is equally interesting - namely White's selections for 2006. What you failed to mention was that for reasons of his own - White selected a squad for the away matches for the Tri-Nations could at best be described as dirt-trackers. The New Zealand press were scandalized by the squad and strongly suggested that the Springboks were in breach of agreement in respect of the tri-nations agreement governing the conduct of member teams. White really had two objectives, namely - * to identify the players that stood out under adverse conditions and could be utilized for the 2007 WC campaign; and * to limit injury problems for key players that he wanted to e sure to be available in the 2007 WC. There was no intention on the part of White to win the 2006 and 2007 Tri-Nations and his whole campaign centers around a programme to ensure a 2007 WC win. I cannot think how you can think that a coach who systematically destroy a top team he inherited can be compared to a coach who built up a team that eventually won the WC - and come up with a statement that he destructive one is a better coach than the one responsible for a WC win. If you can ever explain that one logically - it may even convince me that I an wrong in my assessment. So a Lions team consisting of their so-called dirt trackers are not represented of front players in the teams of the four Unions who form part of the Lions set-up. All are really automatic selections for their unions. Yet you ignore the absence of the frontline Brumbies players that was not available for the Brumbies because of their Wallaby commitments. Come now - become for once a person that compare apples to apples and not be a poster of crap on this site.

Jake was exceptional at selecting an extended squad. He did not just hand test caps out. Players knew they had to be earned. He had other pressures on him that held him back from doing what would have been best for SA rugby.

It actually hurts a bit to see guys doubt Jake. He was the best thing to ever happen to SA rugby! He breathes rugby and he should have been given free reign over SA rugby!

At the end of the day, all those Lions guys are internationals. Brumbies were a depleted provincial team. Take nothing away from that win.

We will always have a devide in his supporters vs his knockers but no one can deny Jake is a great coach. Ordinary coaches dont win world cups. Thats why Mallett never came close. He is a prick man! He doesn't have half the rugby nouse of Jake. Not even comparable! One is a rugby man and one is a talker!

"Ordinary coaches dont win world cups."

Can't agree, SmallCock. Joke White won a RWC and he was a very ordinary coach . . . at best!

World Cups are not the be all and end all of rugby in the first place and, given the draw of the 2007 RWC where the Springboks were able to win a RWC without playing one of the All Blacks, the Wallabies or the hosts France . . . and we effectively only had to beat England twice . . . a very ordinary coach like Joke White was in fact able to win a RWC (with the help of another overrated and very ordinary coach, Eddie Jones)

I reckon my granny could have coached the Springboks to beat the 2007 England team at a neutral venue . . . which at the end of the day is all Joke really achieved . . . except my granny probably wouldn't have come as close as Joke came to losing to 2nd tier minnows like Tonga and Fiji along the way.

Was really hoping to log on and see a comment from someone who knows a bit about the game but no. Instead a get crap from an overgrown kid who hates the world for something his parents did when he was little!

Have you ever got anything nice to say about SA rooipoes? Its like you want us to be dominated by NZL and Aus.

I dont care what a fuckwit like you has to say about Jake. He is a well respected coach by rugby men the world over. Im sure he is not gona lose sleep over what some 50+ hasneverbeen, still living with his parents has to say.

Rooipoes, the joke as always!
