Japan-based former All Black midfielder Tamati Ellison is returning to Super Rugby in 2014 with the Melbourne Rebels.
The 30-year-old former Blues, Hurricanes and Highlanders representative was unveiled last night as the Australian franchise's latest signing, as coach Tony McGahan rebuilds a backline no longer featuring Wallabies Kurtley Beale, James O'Connor and Nick Phipps.
Ellison, who played the last of his four tests against Scotland on last year's northern hemisphere tour, moves to Melbourne one a one-season deal when he completes his current contract at the Ricoh Black Rams.
McGahan, the former Wallabies assistant coach who replaced Damien Hill at the end of a disappointing campaign this year, said Tamati's versatility and experience would be valuable assets.
"Tamati has the ability to play at a high level across a number of positions in the backline, which makes him a very important part of a squad in such a fast and demanding competition," McGahan said.
"His experience from all levels of New Zealand rugby, combined with his overseas playing time will enable him to contribute to our programme across many levels, both on and off the field."
Ellison, who made his Super Rugby debut for the Blues in 2005 and earned his first test cap against Italy four years later was looking forward to his next career move.
"The Rebels are building a very competitive team, and I'm looking forward to being a part of that," he said.
