That was a good watch this weekend, compared to the previous. Even the Kings keeping the Saders within distant sight was a positive. Sergel Petersen continues to impress with his hunger to make an impression......I love the way the kid takes on 2 or 3 and manages to shepherd the man with ball into touch.

The Bulls with all their changes cocked that one up......not sure what Ludeke was thinking about, much like bringing on the very impressive Jan Serfontein so late, when its clear this kid should be the first name on the team sheet. What an impression he made when he came on......this kid has to be a Bok this year. His ability to beat defenders is a rare gift for a centre these days. If he does not start the next Bulls game, Ludeke should be sacked. There were few positives for the Bulls - JJ Engelbrecht was once again good with little ball and rock solid in defence. He and Jordaan were the best SA 13's of the weekend, with my vote going to JJ playing in losing Bulls side. Mapoe was really poor, Kirchner continues to have little impact from the back. Vermaak was once again poor, the rest of the backs were at best solid.

Of the forwards Spies and Dewald Potgieter were good, the rest at best average. I was disappointed in Paul Willemse not showing his form of last season. He just went unnoticed, but had only arrived in Oz that week and it was his first outing for the Bulls. Grant Hattingh is not physical enough for a lock. Pity JJ did not get that last try to equalize, it was touch and go. Disappointing by the Bulls though.

The Cheetahs were once again great, with Brussouw standing tall. Any fool who thinks he is not worthy of a Bok spot needs their head checked. He and George Smith showed exactly why sides need real fetchers at 6. Labascagne and v/d Walt continue to enhance their reputations and both look test quality loosies. de Jager at 4 is a real find, he gets better with every game and had it not been for Steph du Toits huge game for the Sharks, de Jager would have been my pick of the week at 4. Nkanyane and Strauss had big games as well, as did Coenie when he came on. Coenie is just so powerful.

In the backs, Rhule was good, Sadie continues to disappoint. Smit at 10 is a good replacement for Goosen as he looks to attack at every opportunity. Great stuff from the Cheetahs, three in a row on tour is awesome.

Good to see the Sharks back on track, but the Rebels were bloody useless. Steph du Toit was huge, what a player this kid is - like Etzebeth, he is just going to get better and better. Plenty of physicality in that kid, if its not contact, its clearing rucks and the lad has good pace for a giant. Cooper at 2, is one for the future, far more of a physical presence than Burden. Daniel and Kankan had great games, Kankan showing why he should not have been dropped in the first place. Beast had a great game.

Good to see Reinach back to his best and Lambie had a solid enough game. The centres brought nothing to the party. I never expected anything from Bosman and he never failed to deliver, there is no way I would select this guy. Frans showed more with ball in hand in the few minutes he was on. Frans needs to return to 12 after the Sharks week off this weekend. Jordaan again was a bit of a no shower although he did look good when he did get the ball. He needs to learn to feed off his 12's somehow, for whatever he is doing right now, is not making an impact. He looks good with ball in hand, but seems to see little ball. Mvovo and Ludik were good, JP was again disappointingly anonymous.

Performance of the weekend was the Stormers shutting motormouth Jake up - loved that. Great performance by the pack who owned the Brumbies. Liebenberg back at 2, gave the scrum clout. Kitshoff and Malherbe were damn good in the scrums and in general play. Bekker was a monster, in that form, he is better than Matfield ever was and thats saying something. Consistency has always been an issue with Bekker. Hell even Steenkamp had a good game. The Stormers loosetrio is hot property with Elstadt the standout. This guy has to be part of the Bok equation. Add his physicality to that of Bismark, Etzebeth, Steph du Toit and Bekker and I cant see many test packs competing with these brutes. Fourie was great when he came on.

In the backs, Jantjies had a great game showing his attacking class with those deft touches. Defensively he got bounced once or twice but for the most stood solid. Jean had a solid game at 12, he is far better at 12 than 13. de Jongh had a no show. That Aplon try was awesome and his trademark. v/d Heever is back to his best and has Bok written all over him. Taute needs to replace the average Joe at 15. Great win by the Stormers, more so that they shut arrogant Jake up - what a twit.

My Bok side of the week. Some tough calls here as there are many that are worthy.

15. Ludik 14. Aplon 13. JJ Engelbrecht 12. Jean 11. v/d Heever 10. Lambie 9. Reinach 1. Beast 2. Strauss 3. Malherbe 4. Steph du Toit 5. Bekker 6. Brussouw 7. Elstadt 8. Vermeulen

Mvovo pushed Aplon at 14, Jantjies pushed Lambie at 10, Kitshoff pushed Beast at 1, de Jager pushed Steph du Toit at 4, Labascagne pushed Elstadt at 7 and v/d Walt and Kankan pushed Vermeulen at 8

I am not really sure how you rate players like JJ Engelbrecht as good - when he carried the ball twice only for a total gain of 8 meters, made 5 tackles and missed 2 and lost possession of the ball twice.  In other words they lost possession ofhte ball everytime he carried it.

Matter of fact between him and Mapoe they actually cost the Bulls victory in that game.

Not really performing well at all - matter of fact he was bad news.  This after his defence against the Crusaders was a shambles - even the New Zealand commentators on the Re-Union programme mentioned it in the term used by me.

Start looking at games objectively - it would really help. .

Mike please stop speaking complete and utter shit. JJ was the best of our 13's......I never saw him miss a tackle, your stats are a load of crap, he certainly put in more than 5 tackles and was good with ball in hand.

Your take on JJ is about as good as your take on Bosman at 12, de Jongh and Jantjies for the Stormers, you know stuff all about rugby - that is very clear. JJ was good for the Bulls, go watch the game again and open your eyes this time. Do the same with the Stormers game and see how creative Jantjies is.

As they say, you know nothing

Once back in SA - contact me and I will recommend a really good optician - but maybe it won't help, because you see only what you want to see when watching rugby.   Maybe that wont help - but what would - would be with your mssive rugby knowledge if you learn to ineterpret what really happened during games and not what you imagine happened or wished for that it happened and then accept that it did.

I would rather have the brain to help me evaluate   what I see properly and stop imgaining things because you want them to happen.

Real idiot in that respect - and Engelbrecht did make five tackels and HE DID MISS TWO.

Sergel Petersen continues to impress with his hunger to make an impression......I love the way the kid takes on 2 or 3 and manages to shepherd the man with ball into touch.

Snapster he is full of running and looks better than rhule who is not coping physically.

I think they could give him a good 30 minutes off bench next time round.

There were few positives for the Bulls - JJ Engelbrecht was once again good with little ball and rock solid in defence. He and Jordaan were the best SA 13's of the weekend, with my vote going to JJ playing in losing Bulls side.

From what I saw he did look better. Still nees to u pthedefensive effort. He is gaining experience.

Mapoe was really poor, Kirchner continues to have little impact from the back.

Do they have better?

Vermaak was once again poor, the rest of the backs were at best solid.

Mitchell said Vermaak is a very good running scrummie - I agree with that . Are the but the bulle are coaching him out of it. Like Mitchell i beleive the scrummie and flyhalf need to present a real threat on attack.

Of the forwards Spies and Dewald Potgieter were good, the rest at best average.

I agree Dewald surprised me with the intensity with which he played. Shows what fresh players can do. Spies is showing more mongrel at last this season.

I was disappointed in Paul Willemse not showing his form of last season. He just went unnoticed, but had only arrived in Oz that week and it was his first outing for the Bulls

Which could well explain it.

Grant Hattingh is not physical enough for a lock.

Agreed he is not really a lock.

Pity JJ did not get that last try to equalize, it was touch and go. Disappointing by the Bulls though.

Was a pity.

The Cheetahs were once again great, with Brussouw standing tall. Any fool who thinks he is not worthy of a Bok spot needs their head checked. He and George Smith showed exactly why sides need real fetchers at 6.

Deon Fourie is a better 6 than Brussouw.

Labascagne and v/d Walt continue to enhance their standings and both look test quality loosies.

Agreed they are doing well but theri tes tchances are slim barring injuries.

de Jager at 4 is a real find, he gets better with every game and had it not been for Steph du Toits huge game for the Sharks, de Jager would have been my pick of the week at 4.

Also like De jager. he palys for 80 minutes and is a youngster. Du Toit cant as yet play 80 minutes but  is a huge prospect. Sharks right now need him at 7.

Nkanyane and Strauss had big games as well, as did Coenie when he came on. Coenie is just so powerful. Coenie needs more gme time but understandably they are being cautious. Hopefully he will go from stregth to strenght. Trevor is doing well and puts in a good few tackles.

In the backs, Rhule was good, Sadie continues to disappoint. Smit at 10 is a good replacement for Goosen as he looks to attack at every opportunity. Great stuff from the Cheetahs, three in a row on tour is awesome.

Acnt agree re rhule but the rest is fair comment.

Spot on

Cooper at 2, is one for the future, far more of a physical presence than Burden. Daniel and Kankan had great games, Kankan showing why he should not have been dropped in the first place. Beast had a great game.

Copper is the understugdy to Bssie for sure. What now fo rburden who should have remained a back. The loose trio fileded by the sharks is a disaster waiting to happen and show pony stuff against a non tackling Rebels side should not be taken too seriously.

Good to see Reinach back to his best and Lambie had a solid enough game. The centres brought nothing to the party.

Reinach thrives in a loose game like this (As does Kan, kan and Dnaiels) but how will he go when the going is really  tough in a test match. We shall see.

I never expected anything from Bosman and he never failed to deliver, there is no way I would select this guy. Frans showed more with ball in hand in the few minutes he was on. Frans needs to return to 12 after the Sharks week off this weekend.

Bosman had a very solid game  andhis distribution etc hwas very much better than frans has showed this season. Plumtree will keep him at center.

Fair comment.

Performance of the weekend was the Stormers shutting motormouth Jake up - loved that. Great performance by the pack who owned the Brumbies. Liebenberg back at 2, gave the scrum clout.

As I said Tiaan is a key player.

Kitshoff and Malherbe were damn good in the scrums and in general play.

Kitshoff was outstanding in general play. Malherbe is closing in on the tighead spot althoug Herbst is also going well and can scrum on both sides. Janni looks kaput and I think misses Bissie. Beast look strong in the scrums and decent in general play. However the opposition was not up to scratch when all is said and done.

Bekker was a monster, in that form, he is better than Matfield ever was and thats saying something.

Brilliant insight snapster. At last!

Kolisi? well he is not as good as Fourie at 6 I hope you now agree.

An awesome Bok pack is emmerging. Some good backs as well. Go Meyer and the Boks!

I dont need to see anyone, its easy to counter you. Hell you only need to read the crap you write to realise that what you know about rugby is laughable.

Anyone who selects Bosman over Jean at 12 after this weekend needs their head tested. Frans Venter and Ebersohn were better 12's than Bosman this weekend.

JJ was our best 13, with Jordaan the only candidate to challenge him.

Why not tell us again how poor a player Jantjies is and best of all that he has no ball sense!!!!!

Mike, I suggest you just read my posts and learn, refrain from posting until you have seen my take on the games.......for your takes are a joke

from what i saw old JJ did nothing to warrant a place in a team of the week. apart from his stop and startish playing time and that dissallowed try he did nothing to really fuel the "desires"

on the meyer issue meyer himself performs well in a more open uptempo unstructed playing pattern and tio be fair his attacking play is by far his strongest suite. the rebels on the other hand was totally overwhelmed and meyer really did not get tested at all this weekend. brussouw had a blinder and should really be the first in line for the bok recall ahead of the completly overrated louw.

In decent language now - and I am not going to be nasty - is it a function of a no 12 center to pass the ball to the rest of the backline?   I believe it is - an inside center who try and make a few meters before crashballing is not an inside center at all

In all the games Steyn played in at 12 this year he passed less than half the balls to players outside of him.   In the game against the brumbies he was atrocious in that regard.   During that game he handled the ball 17 times.   He made trwo atrociously bad kicks - crashballed 11 times and passed the ball excatly four times.    The tendency on Steyns part is to crashball - he thinks he can run straight at players and run over them - but it never works and the result is an inevitable crashball.

That is one reason why the whole game turned into a farce whn he was at center - since it made the backline functioining impossible.    Even when he was brought on onSaturday he got hthe ball in the clear twice - in the one case he got tackled and lost the ball (obviously not even considering passing the ball) - in  the other case the forward  pass was so far forward the recicpient could not even get there to make a decent attempt to catch the ball.

You shout and scream about Bosman but the latter got the ball 10 times - he passed it 6 times - carried it four times - made a clean linebreask and off-loaded the ball effectively.    In the case of the try scored by Ludick bosman gave a skip pass to Ludick - whilst the defender concentrted on Jordaan and the try was scored becauuse it opened up a gap for Ludick.

Do you really think that Francois Steyn is a good link player with the backline?   If you look at all th games he played in since he came back from France - he kicked the ball or hung onto it  more than 60% of the cases and effectively that way killed backline play.

The fact that even when he was in the open he did not pass the ball in one case and in the other he gave a forward pass - confirms that his passing game is not up to standard.    Because of lack of speed in all the games he played in since his return from France - even in those cases where he did pass balls it were in fact slowish and the outside players could do nothing with the ball.

I really think that you have it all wrong in Francois Steyn - because you so implicitly believe in him - that you fail to see what he does to the backline of the Springboks and also the Sharks.    That I believe is Plumtree's real problem with him and the reason reason why Plumtree find him unacceptable at center in the first place and said he would consider him at full back - and I believe Plumtree is right in that respect.

No Mike its simple. Frans was our best 12 last year in the tests. He was again the best 12 in the first two games of the S15 - I have provided player ratings and my takes on his performances to back this up.

Frans and the rest of the Sharks side were poor in games 3 and 4. Frans was fingered as being out of condition and needed conditioning - thats fair enough, I cant argue with that. But so say he is suddenly no longer an able 12 is a joke.

To compare his matches to the one sided affair against the Rebels is insulting. Hell a player like Bosman was not able to even shine in such an open game, where 10 tries were scored. Imagine if Jan Serfontein had been in that Sharks side - my guess is that he would have set up and scored a good few tries.

Bosman was about as effective as de Jongh was against England. I did not see him beat a single defender or create anything with a pass. All he did was tackle which was not often as the Rebels never saw the ball. Bosman was a no show, with Jordaan being slightly better.

Plum has NOT said Frans will play fullback, all he said was that Frans might play there if Ludik was injured. Frans will return to 12 when fully fit. My guess is that Plum with rotate the centre roles with Whitehead, Jordaan and Frans. Bosman will fall out of the equation once Whitehead returns, which should be the next Sharks game.

For the Boks, I only see Jan Serfontein as a challenge to Frans at 12. Id be tempted to play Jan at 13, outside Frans

I accept your version - but then you will have to accept another thing - and that is with Steyn at 12 - the Springbpok backline would be as dead as they were (when he played at 12)  and as was the case with the Sharks backline this year up to last week.

To put Serfontein at 13 - without getting decent balls would be bad for him - and Steyn would never give him anything decent to use.

You don't believe stats - neither do I really do so, because I prefer to look at games and make  up my own mind about it - and I found that Steyn's role in backline play is disruptive and ineffectual.   You are welcome to your ideas - but the result would be the same as last year as long as Steyn is around - dead backline with no attacking possibilities.   Forget about him and look at Serfontein and de Allende as future 12's.

No, I look at Frans last year for the Boks and what he provided. The Boks played a kick and chase game, they never spread the ball. When they did, Frans did his bit well. When he had space, he passed, when he was in traffic, he imposed himself physically and made ground with ball in hand.

He was huge in defence as he always is. In his first two S15 games, he did much of the same as the Sharks were playing it conservatively.

Hell the backs against the Rebels were hardly attacking now were they? Its not like Lambie, Bosman, Jordaan, JP, Mvovo and Ludik set the world alight with ball in hand. 6 tries were scored by the forwards, one try was an intercept by Reinach.......so DomMike what are you actually trying to say about the Sharks backs, huh?

They failed to impress against the useless Rebels side and you think, things have improved for the Sharks backs - you my friend are as lost, clueless and ignorant as ever

Fransie should commit himself to fullback and leave inside center to Jan for the Boks. Frans wasn't the sole problem with the Sharks backline, but is dip in form has slightly contributed, it's also Lambie who is playing a highly kick orientated game with barely any attacking flair.

Saffex has got a valid point with the last game against the rebels not being entirely a success for the Sharks with its backline still not being as effective as one would expect.

I want to grant you one thing about the game of the Springboks last year - they kicked away too much possession.   I know you hate stats - but am nontheless going to give it to you to show what Steyn did with the balls passed to him.

2012 Tests

Balls Received -      83

Balls Kicked away  -   8

Balls crashballed  -   42

Balls Passed         -    30

Super 15

Balls Received     -    69

Balls kicked away -   10

Balls crashballed   -   32

Balls passed           -   27

If you analyse the above stats - Steyn constantly pass less than 40% of the balls he received to other players.   He crashballed over 50% of the balls he received last year and only slighty less this year.   There can be no doubt that he neglected the outside players by NOT passing balls to them - thus blunting any potential backline attacks completely.

The other issue is the quality of his passes.   They were slow and often enough those passes were passed with the defenders on top of the recipients.

There can be no doubt that the Springboks backline - other than in the Wallaby test was poor and showed no flair - neither did any player exactly cover themselves  in glory.

The Sharks backline this year showed nothing as well.   Lambie was not enterprising in the irst two games 9 but in the Brumbies gaame he was attacking himself - while Steyn did not bother to be anywhere to receive potential passes from Lambie   Lambie did pass 69 balls to Steyn - some in open space.   Steyn crshballed nearly half of all the balls passed to him.    In the games this year his tackling was poor as well.

Plumtree did not discover after two games that Steyn was out of form - he saw it straight away - even in the first  Super 15 game that you made so much about.    As Plumtree said - when Steyn arrived in Januuary to commence training he weighed 118 kgs.   In PMB at the match to Steyn looked slimmer than he was  last year in the tests - yet somebody told me he was weighing 115 kgs.   I said I believe he is 110kgs - but the bloke was correct.    He probably was 118 kgs at the tim of the tests last year as well.    A person of his height weighing that much is grossly overweight - a fit sportsman would weigh circa 105 to 106 kgs.

Being 114 to 115 kgs at the time of the first game oif the Sgharks this year indicated that he was not up to standard at that early stage in the series,    By the forth game played by the Shaks a month later he was 110 kgs.   How his form could suddenly slip when he was evidently overweight from the start is a mystery to me.   The actions taken by Plumtree was evident.   After the second game in the series (against the Stormers). Plumtree  said he was unhappy with the backline performances of the Sharks.    It was apparent that the two players singled out was Lambie and Steyn.   Lambie responded and he was much more enterprising  in the third game - Steyn was as bad as he was in the previous game where Plumtree was obviously unhappy about.   He was benched after 60 minutes - and the writing was on the wall.

The game against the Brumbies represented the same scenario,   Lambie tried to be more enterprising - but when he made two breaks there was nobody to off-load the ball to.   Steyn who should have been on his shoulder was nowhere to be seen.   In any event another very poor performance resulted in him being benched for the game against the Rebels.   Steyn did himself no faours when he came of the bench.   He effectively confirmed that his passig game is poor and ineffective.

You may think that Steyn was the best 12 last year - but virtually no one else thought so.   He was predicatable and easy to read.   His game consisted of crashballing more or less 50% of all balls he received and slow passes of about 40%.

In any event - whether you may believe otherwise - Steyn's record showed that he is not an acceptable 12 as he does not add anything constructive  to attacking backline play - end of story.

What this clearly demonstrates is that you have no appreciation for the reality of modern day test rugby, where much of the ball the 12 recieves is in traffic. In traffic a 12 has to take contact and not pass the ball......you will find the same stats apply to Jean, SBW, Nonu and co when they play 12.

Your ignorance to reality is astounding - with your pathetic stats providing no context, one would swear test rugby was played in space and that a 12 enjoyed the luxuary of running free. Get a grip man.

As the reports on Frans in those tests clearly state - he was a huge physical presence and was sorely missed in that last test against England that we ended up drawing.

You know stuff all Mike, especially when it comes to the reality of modern day centres and their roles in test rugby.........we have long moved on from the Danie Gerber days

I accept what you say about restricted space - but did it not happen that at 12 restricted space is also created by  slow and indecisive play by the incumbent himself?  By being slow of the mark and hesitating whether to kick or pass and ending up crashballing - mostly behind the gain line is NOT acceptbale.   Steyn does pass the ball - but because they are late passes from a slow moving player - the poor recipients had defenders all over him when he received  the balls.

Problem is that Steyn is indecisive - he kicked away balls that he should have past  - that while he and the rest of th backline had acres of space in front of him.   On Saturday he got the ball twice in the clear and fouled up both times.

Context means certinly that it is positive when a player performs satisfactorily and recognized by his actual plays on the field of play - with due regard to the eventual outome of those plays.   Context cannot turn around poor performances into good performances.

No you ignorant twit, lack of space is created by the fact that defences are in your face by the time you recieve the ball at 12 - wow do you actually watch rugby?

The modern 12 needs to be physical in order to take contact and offload.......something Frans did perfectly in his first S15 game of the season and did it once in his second game - no other SA 12 does this, except for young Serfontein.

Frans did not do this in his next two games but that was part of the team issue as a whole, the Sharks were piss poor

Yes Steyns phyisality was in evidence - slow, fat and indecisive all in one great bundle  at once. Problem is you do not accept facts - but believe in fiction when it comes to assessment of performances of players.

Sure - I was just watching the first 10 minutes of the Sharks game on U-Tube and Meyer was involed in three plays - one of whxih ultimately let the the Sharks first try.   I will watch the rest of the game again - but in any event, since you only want to see what you want to - it is no use to debate anything with you on any player.   My oen consolation i s that I am 90% of the time right and you are 90% of the time wrong - so put that in your pipe and smoke it.

You can watch the game 20 times, it wont change the fact that Bosman was useless and never beat a single tackle.......that is a one sided game sums up what a bog ordinary player he is.

As I said Morne Steyn has more rugby ability than this guy
