Goosen compared to Carter in New Zealand Media

It may be to add more pressure onto his young shoulders, but Toyota Cheetahs flyhalf Johan Goosen was paid the ultimate compliment when one of New Zealand’s leading rugby magazines asked the question on their cover this week – “Is this the new Dan Carter?”

The 20-year-old Goosen, currently in Sydney with his teammates as they prepare for their Vodacom Super Rugby match against the Waratahs on Friday, was given the honour by New Zealand Rugby magazine, Rugby News, who used the comparison to Carter, a World Cup winner and World Rugby player of the year, as the future of South African rugby.

Goosen has already played for the Boks and started against the All Blacks at FNB Stadium last year but his season was curtailed by injury and the youngster has played down comparisons to Carter in an interview in the magazine.

For one, Goosen points out he is far from the wunderkind that everyone says he is, and believes his tactical kicking needs to improve significantly if he is to make the same sort of impact on world rugby that Carter did for the All Blacks.

“I think I must listen to that praise and let it come in and go out,” he told Rugby News, “I must keep my head in the game and focus on what I am doing.

“(My tactical kicking) is a weakness in my game, so I am working hard on it,” adding he had taken many tips from working with veteran Morne Steyn during last year’s Castle Rugby Championship.

It was good to see the youngster slot all his kicks as the Cheetahs shocked the Highlanders in Invercargill on the weekend, and given the confidence he received from the win and his own resurgence in play, there is hope that if he stays injury free he could reach the heights others think he can.

For now though, he simply wants to play.

He is good enough to be the next Dan Carter

 Lambie is good, but does not have the same potential as Goosen. 

What is a little worrying is that Goosen says his tactical kicking is his weakness, and is working on it with Morne Steyn(Meyer in the background).

Morne is a good kicker but look what has happened to Lambie this year so far after working with Meyer in the background. Hopefully the Sharks 10 starts playing like was last year with the right mix of kicking and running

For once, I agree with you. Goosen is better than Lambie

Goosen is not in the same street as Carter and never will be! He finally kicked some goals last weekend but the rest of his play is not even up to S15 standard, let alone test standard!

Moo you clearly know stuff all about rugby

Goosen maybe SA awnser at 1st five. However what is diificult is stacking him up to Carter especially as SA has had a drought of quality 1st fives (if i'm off the mark here correct me don't abuse me) that when a running one come along its easy to elevate him compared to what has come before. Carter is an exceptional player, you only have to look at his breakout game against the British  Lions where he turned on a masterclass and cemented his name in the "going to be one of the best in the world" club. Goosen at this time doesn't seem to be quite there but he is a classy player, probably on par with Cruden. Still like Lambie though, very mature player sorta like a SA Grant Fox with a running game though.

 Its nice to be young, allways an oppertunity to have the potential to develop into a great. Although Carter is probably the best flyhalf ever, at least for the longest period of time consistently the best.

 Poly you are wrong, we have better young flyhalves than NZ do. Goosen and Lambie are better than any of the youngsters you have. 

Has'nt the Cheetahs starring the Goose and the Mighty Chiefs already faced off ??? and Cruden had four or five tries up on Goosen just in one game  _says it all really.

Cruden has also served three or four years more of his apprenticeship than Goosen so obviously more mature and experienced.... better step, better kicker, has a superior passing and kicking game.. 

As Justin Marshall says Cruden is currently the form standoff in NZ so he also must think Carter is past his best which says alot coming from yr former Crusader team mate.

So comparing Goosen to Dan Carter is 'nt saying as much as it used to unfortunately. Unless you think Goosen is afading star.

Cruden at standoff has dictated  the plays for the Chiefs and consistently managed to steer the Chiefs to bonus point tries.....while playing with a groin strain... If the Cheetahs were closer to ther top of the log you might've had a case.

 when Cruden gets his fullback Robinson, Centre Kahui and halfback back in action .- SBW would have been nice contributing 156 line breaks last season  ....

How the backline functions successfully without them can be credited in large to the that little general at standoff ...overachievers they are and also shows how great the depth of talent available within the Mighty Chiefs...

Hi there brycy are you talking about the mighty chiefs who got klapped at newlands by a Stormers side missing a host of players from the match 22? Hahahahahahaha get real brycy.

All on ecan do is try and compare carter and goosen at the same ages. Difficult to do but I would be surprised if carter were better.

Bean brain hopefully none of those skanky newlands hoes gave our boy s the klapp. But as yr hero justin marshalhas stated - the ref was a "diabolical" cheat or something to that effect as he was being polite...Bean brain so you made him a millionaire so what. The Bulls and Sharks are the dominant SA teams so even if the Mighty Chiefs just pulled you out of the gutter when thats as far as you go - it was cruel to get yr hopes up sorry about that mate...

How good were the Mighty Chiefs at Newlands outscoring the hapless stormers in tries and double bonus points with only 14 men... Pity the ref had to stop the game cause the Chiefs looked like winning...

The ref should have blown the chiefs out of the game brycy. He was extremely lenient with all their lying on the ball, jersey pulling and every trick in the book to slow the ball down. It had got vitually to red card proportions.

Saffa refs bend over backwards to give kiwi sides a fair deal.  So non more nonsense please brycy as we have ou snaspeter and rooitwit busy enough in that regard.
