According to his club Racing 92, South Africa international Johan Goosen has reportedly retired from rugby at the age of 24.


Racing broke the news in a statement from club president Jacky Lorenzetti on the club’s website on Friday, saying: “Goosen, whose contract was overwhelmingly re-structured a year ago, now claims to be free in an incredible way.


“He has announced today that he has taken the incredible decision to end his playing career, to return to South Africa for a strong role as a commercial director.


“We regret that such a talented player has gone astray and decided to abandon professional rugby as it seems obvious that the role of commerical director is incompatible with high level sport.

“We wish to add that Racing 92 has always strongly supported Johan Goosen both morally and financially. And while it has unfortunately proved in recent times that there is a certain lack of vis-à-vis between the player and his coaches and more generally of all members of the club and its fans, we hope it quickly becomes aware that compliance with a contract like that of a given word is the basis of all human and professional relationships.

“Naturally, Racing 92 reserve the right to give such conduct all appropriate legal actions both towards Johan Goosen as those who advise him.”


The news comes as a huge shock. Goosen was named Top 14 Player of the Season for 2015/2016 after helping the club win the French title and reaching the Champions Cup final.


He has won 13 caps for South Africa since making his debut in 2012, starting at full-back for the Springboks in their most recent Test against Wales.

The 24-year-old moved to France in 2014 after beginning his professional career with the Cheetahs in Super Rugby.

I thought there was a problem since Goosen was not in the Racing team in their last Champions Cup game. This could have originated from the fact that he as called up for national duty and played some games for the Springboks. The following remarks in the Rugby365 article indicates that may have been the problem:- "As reported by some media, Johan Goosen has failed to meet his contractual obligations [with Racing92] for several weeks," Lorenzetti said in a statement on the club website." I think that Goosen decided to retire and the real reason is he wants to get back to SA, Original info was his wife is not happy in France and I think that may have had a bearing on the retirement, I suspect Goosen would not sign with any SA Franchise until 2018 - he will probably take a year off rugby so as to justify his decision to retire from Rugby and would then return at age 26 to play rugby locally.  Whats even stranger is some actual rugby news on here for a change.So has this Goosen laid a golden egg somewhere else or is it going to be all over his face ?A talented player who has unfortunately not quite matched up with expectations ,one hopes he isnt lost to SA rugby forever.

 The guy looks like a crook (wants to get away with special deals offered by playing a legal loop that does not exist) and in any case, displays a tremendous lack of professionalism.

Going to be a pain to integrate it back in SARU as the man is tainted for a lifetime.

 In regard with international pressure. The world of rugby can not turn a positive eye on him and any support.

As to nowadays, no, his behaviour is typical of excellent men. His mistake was not one of behaviour, it was one of target.

Mmm... Only a few options here for me as.to what's behind this. There is obviously no way that he is just retiring. Possibly an as yet undisclosed medical condition. Though there'd be no point hiding that from his club as the contract would allow him to exit, with possible renumeration if his departure was due to health reasons. If not medical and not a real retirement, then it's more than likely that he wants to play somewhere else. Either he's been offered more money at another club, or he's been promised a mid/long term role for a team that he has always wanted to be a steady part of. If he's been offered more money somewhere else then it could be anywhere. England maybe? If not for money, then the only option for me is that someone has been in his ear about a long term role with the Boks. Maybe this offer was on the condition that he play his club ball in SA. To me, this option makes the most sense since he is earning good money in France already, is playing well there and has no reason to leave really. He has a lot of experience in Europe, has a good boot, good attacking flare and wasn't the worst Bok this year by a long shot. Maybe those are some of the reasons behind this hypothetical offer. SARU could be trying to secure as many 10s as possible considering Lambie is our most experience presently and has never lived up to expectation. With Pollard still an uncertainty and Jantjies having seemingly(note SEEMINGLY) failed, there ain't too many people to turn to. Just guesses as always.

I heard today there was issues because Carter was playing 10 all of the time which made Goosen a loose wheel.
Maybe he wants to focus at flyhalf so he can get selected for the Boks in this position.

 I do not know what the real story was - Carter was often enough injured since he was contracted by Racing and Goosen was floating around - mainly used at 14  and a few times at 15.
One cannot be sure what caused the bust-up - but I think that Goosen is not entirely to blame for the situation.

Newly "retired" fly-half Johan Goosen has been linked with a move to Gloucester less than a week after wiggling himself out of his Racing 92 contract.


The French club made a shock announcement last week when they revealed Goosen had chosen to end his career to pursue a career as a "commercial director" back in South Africa.


It has widely been speculated that Goosen made the unexpected move in a desperate attempt to get out of his contract with Racing. Goosen's behaviour has been puzzling considering he signed a contract extension with Racing earlier this year, increasing his salary to €500 000 per year.


However, rumours about Goosen's apparent unhappiness living in France have been doing the rounds for a while, prompting club president Jacky Lorenzetti to add a so-called "forfeit clause" in Goosen's new deal should there be a breach of contract, which ammounts to €1 million.


Goosen, who was named Top 14 Player of the Season for 2015/2016 after helping the club win the French title and reaching the Champions Cup final, was reportedly advised that the only way to get out of his predicament with Racing was to retire and take up a lucrative business offer in South Africa, exploiting a loophole in the French contracting system.


In their original statement announcing his retirement, Racing implied there would be legal repercussions for Goosen should it emerge he retired under false pretences in an attempt to move to another club.


Montpellier were reportedly interested in Goosen's services, but are apparently not prepared to pay out the ammount mentioned in the forfeit clause.


Midi Olympique reports Montpellier president Mohed Altrad is trying to buy to 54% stake in Gloucester, prompting speculation that Goosen could go there instead where he would be able to play regularly in his preferred number 10 position.


Goosen has offered no comment on the matter. When his wife Aletia was contacted by Netwerk24, she declined to comment.

 The amount to be claimed by Racing is Euro 1 000 000 - that is a huge amount and I do think that the claim would end up in the courts if Goosen goes to Gloucester.   We will have to wait and see what happens next.
I think Goosen will come back to SA - work for his "new employer" and play some amateur rugby - and after a few months get fired and then go back to play professional rugby for Montpellier or another professional franchise.   Whether it is the latter club or another franchise it seems he is a hot property in the market despite what our resident expert Mozart is saying.

Sorry - but in rugby terms it is a top price.   Habana is one of the big earners with an annual salary of Euro 450 000.
You are not talking cricket here where an 8 week tournament pays more than the top rugby earner (Dan Carter - Euro 1 000 000) is paid for a year.

One has to put yourself in RM's shoes. These clubs also do their planning around player movement with long term goals in mind. They have now just put Goosen's position to bed and secured his future role at the club and now has to start that process from scratch due to his whims.

 So it is heading for a guy faking retirement in order to join another club. Must be a world premiere. SA rugby is number one at something.

If confirmed, this story will not prevent rugby fan boys from talking all about the values in rugby.
