I believe 100% that Goosen is our future, as does just about everyone one this forum, but I think we have all made one mistake regarding him. Goosen is a special player, but he has had half a season at Super rugby level, and that is it. I think we should all just be realistic about this fellow. He may very well be a superstar one day, the signs certainly all point that way, but we should all keep things in perspective...is half a season really enough time to truly make such an assumption?
Goosen the future?
Personally I like a flyhalf who has composure....Goosen ticks that box. .....has a great boot......ticks another box.....posseses good decision making....ticks another box...is solid in defence....another tick. And lets not forget....the kid is work in progress.
Agree 100%. Far too early to gauge his true caliber - for all we know he could be injury-prone, streaky or inconsistent.
Sure looked awesome while he was healthy though.
Exactly my point oimatey. And also, how many players have had a long term injury and have never been able to return to the form that they enjoyed before that injury? Plenty! Again, I am one of those that thinks he has it all, but we really haven't seen enough of him to be so sure. And if people think they have seen enough, then they are just naive.
I do not think we have much of an option here - we must hope he makes it, since there are erious reservations about Morne Steyn - he will have to go if we ever wants a chance in the WC. Who else is there? Definitely not Jantjies - and if Goosen does not make the grade - we only have Lambie to fall back on. After him there only seems to be Pollard and he is still a school kid.
Some injuries inhibit playing careers - but that seems not to be the case with Goosen. So lets hope for the best - he definitely was our best flyhalf in Super 15 by the proverbial mile.
Has anybody got any update on his injury? He was supposed to be playing again end August - early September? any news?
Lambie is a rock....I wouldn't count him out. Goosen's try when he got injured was brilliant as was his boot. But we do have to see him play when he feels the pressure. Test flyhalves mostly survive because of sound decision making under extreme pressure.
His form was better than Morne or any of the other flyhalfs in SA for the Super15. So on that basis he is ready to play for the boks. He will either rise to the occasion and become an even better player or we will start to see what his weaknesses are.
As soon as Goosen has recovered from injury he needs to be fast tracked into the Bok starting side. This kid has it all and more importantly has shown nerves of steel. There is just something about this kid, that dispels the notion of folding under pressure. He has so much time on the ball and sublime skills to execute
goosen has great speed and width on his passes. quick of the mark. attacks from depth. knows then to attack from deep or stand flat and setup phase play. he is complete and he is very very young. great attacking prospect.
we need him in the mix very very quickly....great thing that he plays his rugby at the cheetahs where they generally tend to develop backline play which will only benefit sa rugby in the long run
