Must have been a cracking game 37-35 to Grey. Good result for them as Millfield are one of England's premier rugby schools.



They were at my sons school's rugby festival this year as they always are and usually contest the final. They looked a good side this year but not as good as some of the years, seemed to lack a big physical pack this time round.



Had Gavin Hastings son at 12. He was at the festival watching his boy. Big guy in the flesh.



I know Grey PE were ranked 12th in 2013. Millfield are certainly in the top 10 in the UK

 Hardly news. Was to be expected. Englands top schoolboy side would be out of their depth against SA's 25th placed side!

Thank you - interesting news.  Seems to have been a tight game - unlike the first game against Abingdon.  


However, in the end it doe not bode well that a top English rugby school does not make it against a fairly  low-ranked SA rugby school.   If they have played for instance Grey College Bloem - there would have been a massacre.


All-in-all - school rugby is where all great careers start and it does not look good for the future of English rugby if this type of thing happens .

Grey PE are hardly low ranked at 12, but yes I would expect the top SA schools to be better than the top England schools.

 

I would guess Millfield are about 5th in England this year. 

 

Will be interesting to see how Dr EG Jansen go against my sons school on Sat

 Can you believe it. Something that I actually agree about. It is indeed a good result for Gret. Millfield is currently ranked  3rd in the UK Schools rankings.

Vlagtwat............the Daily Mail Trophy is only played by some schools. The national competition is the NatWest trophy. But its the overall picture you want to judge the UK sides........so try again

Yep the all comers or performance leagues are the best measures.........but knowing Vlagtwat, he will be telling us we are wrong, that he is an authority on UK schools rugby.........watch this space

I know about the Natwest trophy but I did not use that for a specific reason. It is difficult to judge where they are on there at the moment because there is no log available. They have the Natwest divided into different regions and at this stage that is not even complete on the RFU website. They still do not have the results of the round 4 game between Millfield and Richard Huish College, and round 5 was already played last weekend. There are still round 6 and 7 to be played before the QF teams are determined. So, at this stage it is difficult to determine how "strong" they are judging by their Natwest Cup performance, seeing that the winner of their region, Southwest A, has not even been determined yet.

If you wanted to use the Natwest Cup as a yard stick, you could at best have said that they were in the top 64 at this stage and not the top 10.

Be that as it may, I actually supported your claim that the school was in the top 10. However, since I was apparently talking kak when I said that you were correct, where does it leave you then? Duhhh.

 I have just discovered that the mighty Millfield could be out of the Natwest Cup . They have lost their fourth round game at home against Richard Huish College after all.


What happens now? Are those elimination games, and are they now out of the competition?

Clevermike you mentioned that school rugby is where great careers start, this may explain why Kiwi players seem more skillful, cause in NZ at 5 yrs old at least,  kiwi boys are throwing the pigskin around.

As I said, the best measure is the all comers league......it includes all your usual fixtures, all the cup fixtures you are involved in etc. Its your season as a whole which gives a good indication of where you are at.

 

 

Yep if you lose a NatWest game you are out of the comp. The NatWest was known as the Daily Mail until this year. Its a national knock out comp, starts regionally and then becomes national.

 

 

Final is contested at Twickers.......run at U18 and U15 level

Think carefully now........... Because you have just mentioned what the best measure is, because we might still both be wrong about just how strong/weak Millfield might be. Remember that I agreed that they are one of the stronger rugby schools in England.

Not sure what has happened but Dr EG Jansen are now playing Leicester Tigers on Friday evening and might be playing us on Wednesday. 

Our director of sport is not impressed with the way they are messing us around, so at this stage we dont know if this stupid school is going to turn up
