In a gripping display of rugby prowess at the Toyota Challenge in Bloemfontein, the Griquas dispatched Romania A with a solid 35-20 victory, while the Pumas succumbed to a tenacious Black Lion team, falling 46-36 in a match that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
The Pumas initially took the lead, showcasing strong form with a 21-20 advantage at halftime, courtesy of dynamic tries from Darren Adonis, Simon Westraadt, and Thomas Bursey. Despite their efforts, with Westraadt nabbing a second try and Willie Engelbrecht also crashing over, the Georgian side, Black Lion, turned the tables. The turning point came with a penalty try and a critical yellow card to Pumas' lock JJ Scheepers, allowing Black Lion to seize control and eventually notch up the win with a flurry of late tries.
Meanwhile, the Griquas presented a tactical showcase, leveraging heavily rotated squad options to outmaneuver Romania A. Amidst the action, Simon Liversage, Connor Mahoney, Jack Hart, Mheli Khuzwayo, and Tom Nel all crossed the whitewash, with Liam Koen, stepping in for the injured Zinedine Robinson, converting all five tries. Despite a brief resurgence from Romania A, the Griquas capitalized on their opponents' yellow card phase, pulling decisively ahead to cement their victory.
"We took our chances and stayed disciplined despite the setbacks,"
commented Griquas coach Pieter Bergh, praising his team’s performance and the depth shown by his players.
The matches highlighted the strategic elements of rugby, with both games witnessing shifts in momentum influenced by critical plays and disciplinary actions. As the tournament progresses, the teams will no doubt analyze these encounters to refine their strategies and lineup choices.
