Zac Guilford © Gallo Images Guilford to drink for Clermont 09 January 2014, 15:13

New Zealand and Crusaders wing Zac Guilford will join Clermont Auvergne next season on a two-year contract, the French Top 14 club said on Thursday.

The 24-year-old Guilford, who can also play at fullback, was part of the 2011 World Cup winning squad, notably scoring four tries against Canada.

Clermont, the 2013 Heineken Cup runners-up, lead the standings in the Top 14, which they won for the first time in 2010 after 10 failed attempts in the final.

Guilford, who has an option for an extra year on his contract, is the latest addition to a series of top-notch recruits for Clermont after France lock Sebastien Vahaamahina and Wales and British & Irish Lions centre Jonathan Davies.

So the piss head has penned a 2 year deal with Clermont. I wonder how to French will take to him walking around naked on the weekend nights before Match days and punching people

Granted there's no excuse for bad behaviour but the young lad has a disease called alcoholism...and it is a genuine disease just like cancer or motor neuron or any other and you better believe it.

I believe he has admitted this and needs to be respected which is the beginning of better things for him...I hope Zac makes a go of it...he has a lot of talent but he has the biggest battle yet to fight.

No one knows his personal pain.  You guys are quick to attack players but all that fame and money is difficult for some to balance.  He is a talented player I wish him well.

Binge drinking is not an alcoholic. An alcoholic drinks everyday and would never been in the physical peak condition to represent top level rugby teams like the Crusaders and All Blacks
If he was not a famous person their is no way that he would book counselling for binge drinking sessions, this is just to satisfy the sponsers etc.

He is obviously an alcoholic...a very unknown science ironically although it is so common and plagues society like no other...it not only destroys the body but everything...the mind, the soul, integrity, respect, financial stability, friendships, love and family and many many others.

There are so many variations as well...my dad was a tennis champ and a chronic alchy believe or not...just had a constitution like a horse and I have known alcoholics that run the Comrades and one that came 2nd on the uphill run and that's honest truth. It takes a very strong person to beat this one because it is the biggest liar.

Sadly this world fails dismally to recognise this truth and yes Kalaed Freddie, no one knows his personal pain.

so Sebaastienchabel because your Dad was an alcoholic and the Tennis champ for the pub team down the road- you are able to determine anyone who is an alcoholic- Puleeze!
If being an Alocholic destroys the body like you say- can you explain how Zac Guilford was an All Black? The fitness levels of the All Blacks is insane.

NZ is full of pissheads . Australia is full of drunken Aussies.

Sebastian you're ruining this thread for the Sharkbok by sayin there are alcoholics in South Africa too and they're not all on the Rooibos tea.

But who gives a shit. All part of the rites of passage is'nt it?

@sharkbok,

i can understand the title of ur thread as that is ur standard MO, but why would u go to such lengths as to edit ur article title to match ur thread title???

"Binge drinking is not an alcoholic. An alcoholic drinks everyday and would never been in the physical peak condition to represent top level rugby teams like the Crusaders and All Blacks"
ur knowledge on alcoholism is even lower than ur knowledge on good attacking rugby which has been proven to be non existent.

zac is an alcoholic or recovering alcholic, he admitted it last year when he went to rehab, or do u know more about zac guilford than zac guilford??? o_O

his AA sponsor has spoken a few times about the good work that zac has been putting in since his time in rehab, binge drinkers dont normally get sponsors.

do u really think that zac is the only high performance athlete in the world who is an alcoholic???

as sebastianchabal pointed out, there are different levels of alcoholism, and while zacs isnt exactly on a leaving las vegas level, hes still dealing with a lot of things u couldnt even begin to grasp with such uneducated and narrow comments.

Sas, one thing I've learnt is that it's a waste of time argueing with ignorance...the majority of public knowledge and opinion on alcoholism is wrought in total misunderstanding and indifference...man simply turns a blind eye on this subject...anyway good luck to Zac and I really hope he makes it because that will be his greatest "try" ever.

Seb

Zac is definitely an alcoholic - as long as he keeps 100% away from alcohol he will be fine as a sportsman.   What is not generally known is that alcoholism is an inherited disease.   if either of the parents are alcoholics - chances are the children would have the same problem.

One has to pity th e guy and rather pray for him than condemn him.

of course Zac Guilford is going to say he is an alcoholic.
What else is going to say...Oh yeah I get pissed and I like having fights and causing shit. All my sponsors can get stuffed because that is the way I roll!
Lots of people bing drink and cause trouble. Have you ever been to a major night club and seen how many people get thrown out by the night club bouncers. If it happens with someone famous it is in the news and they have to show remorse for their actions. The easiest way out is to say their are struggling with alcoholism.
I don't claim to be an authority on being an alcoholic but I am sure that it is related to drinking frequently and not bing drinking.
I bing drink and sometimes cause shit, as do other people that I have grown up with- at night but this does not mean being an alcoholic.
It just means not being able to handle  alcohol and drinking to fast. When I was Zac Guilford's age nearly everyone I rolled with would have been classified as an  alcoholic under this media defined and expected persona for athletes.
I still maintain that if a player can make the All Blacks their fitness level is far beyond an  alcoholic.
