Ex Sport 24

Cape Town - Former Western Province coach Alan Zondagh and former Springbok centre Brendan Venter are of the view that the Stormers attack should improve.

Zondagh, also a former consultant to the Springboks, is worried that the Stormers will lack that much needed attacking element in an important game, while Venter feels they can be more clinical on attack.

Zondagh told Die Burger it is possible to be successful on the attacking front without neglecting a solid defensive system.

"They don't need to give up their superb defence. The foundation and structure are already there. However, they could add an attacking dimension in order to be more effective when the opportunity arises.

"The main aim is still to win. But I'm worried that the Stormers will find themselves needing such a dimension in a key game and then won't be geared for it," said Zondagh. (Totally agree)

Zondagh, who was a scrumhalf in his playing days, doesn't like the fact that they constantly keep the ball amongst the forwards while attacking. "It's the safe option, but leads to nothing. Nothing happens to the defence. I feel a team is more dangerous if the ball regularly reaches the flyhalf so he can make a decision. It's not like the ball can't be moved back to the forwards."

He also feels the Capetonians should pay more attention to counter attacks. "The value of turnover ball is often emphasised because it's viewed as a try scoring opportunity."

And with dangerous backs like Juan de Jongh, Bryan Habana, Gio Aplon and Jean de Villiers, it's advice that coach Allister Coetzee and his coaching team should surely take note of.

Venter, the current technical director of English club Saracens, says Coetzee's game plan is spot on but the players lack the finishing touch when it comes to scoring.

"It's merely a case of the Stormers not being clinical enough when they get in their opponents' half. It's got nothing to do with their game plan. The plan is working brilliantly," said Venter.

He also feels that Schalk Burger and Duane Vermeulens absence is proving costly. "The loose trio from last year were Schalk, Duane and Francois Louw. They are big guys that can carry the ball. The youngsters don't have that physical strength." Well clearly Beeno and Venter ( a top rugby brain) are on the same page here. Elstadt is fine but he needs to be joined by Sa Player of the year Burger (who ou sapster trashes revealing his abject ignorance!) and the world class Duane Vermuelen - the new Bok number 8 once fit. It is amazing to think we have oaks like Coetzee and Fleckie who know zip about bacline coaching running the show when we should be making every effort t ograb hold of a class act like Venter.

Being a gentlemen is not the only quality to being a top coach - you need brains and rugby acumen. Venter puts anything we now have, after Rassie's lamatable departure ala Mallet, in the shade. Give Venter a month or so with our backline and watch the difference.   I have nothing against Allister as a man but he is a quota appointment as he clearly flopped with the Boks. So Rassie goes and we end up with him!!!! That happened because our guys running the show down here ought all to be fired for gross incompetence - the top brass are our essential problem.

Wow Beeno1, you talk like the Stormers are bottom of the log. The fact is that since Erasmus left, Coetzee has taken the team to the top of the log despite the inability to score tries. You mention the star players missing which makes it difficult. So how can you call Coetzee a quota? You've got to be joking, man, or is it natural to blame the black guys when things go wrong?

Beeno I'd offer you a trumpet, but you seem to have blowing your own one down to an art. LOL

Just kidding!

Blue2, They are top of the log, but it'll just take one loss and then the importance of bonus points will become apparent.

I think AC has brought the test match mentality in of win at all costs. Which isn't necceserily a bad thing. He is also better equipt i think than Rassie in handling the administrators in the Western Province Rugby. Seriously Rassie is a brilliant rugby brain but he has his weaknesses as he is no politician. Allistair is better at that than him.

Bluebok AC was the Bok backline coach. Hence if that was a merit appointment one would have eexpected him to do  a good job. He flopped as Bok backline coach and JAke brought in Eddie Jones. The improvement in Bok backline play was immediate.

As a reward for flopping he has his present position. Once again our backline underperforms. So if he cant coach a backline( his speciality ) - and I did say Fleckie can't either - what caused him to get the position with WP? No rugby reason I can assure you. JUst l;ike ou pdv. AC though is a better man than ou pdv by some way.

This is the house that Rassie built. Nieaber is a Rassie taught and developed man. The players we have were aseembled by Rassie. He put it all together and we are simply going forward with that.

Sorry bluebok  but I do not believe AC's appointment was a merit one. I like the guy, he is a gentlemen and a decent man -  But my objection stands.

There are too many little guys in the Stormers backline who rely on skill to beat the man. It does not work at S15 and test level, you need to be able to impose yourself physically as well - both on attack and defence.

If they had any sense they would have used the likes of JP du Plessis more and brought in the physical and skillful Baby Bok Pat Howard into the equation

The next two weeks will define the Stormers season. Away against the in-form Sharks and Bulls. If they can win both, even with no bonus points, they'll at least win the conference.

No dissrespect Blue2, but the next to weeks will define the whole season for all the teams, not just the Stormers, because all the top teams are playing each other. Time to seperate the men from the boys. What is lekker about things as they stand is that all the top teams are in control of their own success. They don't need other teams to do them favours or other results to go their way. The Bulls, Sharks, Stormers, Chiefs, Brumbies, Crusaders all know if they win, they are away, their current positions on the log are theirs to lose. Awesome stuff!!!

@ bluebok - Correctly awesome for the competition, not so awesome for the respective national coaches.

I agree with the sapster. I would like to have had a sight of Du Plessis, Howard and even Danie Poolman.

The backline is too small. Two small players max. One being the scummie. We have 4 undersize players.

When will these guys get this simple concept.

Having a guy like Aplon fresh on the bench and then bring him on at fullback with 30 minutes to cause havoc in.

With Burger's departure the Stormers lost a crucial link. Schalk is not a great runner with the ball....security is his calling card. You could send him into the Spartans shield wall, he may get killed, but he'd still hang onto the ball. Most rugby fans know that.

What tends to be overlooked is the number of times he gets out wide as the crucial link in a movement. Often you see him involved several times in a single movement. It's a role he honed as his fetcher credentials diminished. He stays with the ball in an uncanny way. Schalk had become a huge part of the Stormers offence.

With that gone, the backs are pretty much isolated from the forwards. Movements tend to die for lack of support. There's part of your problem.

Wow so Burger is part of the reason the Stormers backline is not firring - have heard it all now. I know he think he walks on water but this is a bit of a stretch........thanks for the laugh though!
