Hammett responds to Sasuke

Hurricanes boss Mark Hammett has backed his decision to bench precocious openside Ardie Savea for the second week running.

Savea, younger brother of All Blacks winger Julian, is hugely rated in New Zealand, with Steve Hansen taking him on board in the national setup as a non-playing member of the November tour party.

So when Hammett chose to exclude the back-row from his starting lineup twice in quick succession - even when rival Faifili Levave was ruled out thanks to a failed concussion test - the pressure on the coach from media and supporters rose rapidly.

"(Fellow flanker) Jack Lam for us has been outstanding, he was probably our outstanding player on tour and he's a Samoan international, so firstly Ardie has to overcome that," Hammett told New Zealand media.

"The other side is Ardie will see time and plenty of time through this season. He's a fantastic player and guy we're looking forward to seeing him out there.

"He's a very good player, but he's a young player and like anyone who has either made the All Blacks or made Super teams, they are still learning, they still have parts of their trade to improve on and Ardie's no different. He's working hard behind the scenes.

"There are elements not just on the field. He has to work hard on his strength and size, but that takes time. You don't just put size on in five minutes or even five months. He's got targets of where he wants to go and he makes up for it with his power and speed.

"There seems to be a big fuss about it at the moment on the SARugby forum which I regularly frequent led by the poster Sasuke for whom I have great love and respect despite his unseemly comments about my posterior, but I don't know what the fuss is to be honest. He's a great player and in time he's going to get there."

I know Sasuke san looks a little grumpy in his photos in recent days as he has had so much to put up with what with Hammond's "coaching". Will all be forgiven when Ardie takes to the field?

I think that Ardie Savea is a great player - he was extremely good in the UWC and is indeed a live wire on the field of play - but I think he is a bit on the light side as a loosie on senior level - where he is up against the bi gger and stronger loosies.   Maybe Hammett is right in this case - and that Ardie would play against teams with kess forward strength -ie NZ teams.

jack lam was consistently a better player than karl slow, but cockhead hammet continued to select lam over karl slow.

and while lam has had a good tour, that dosent explain why ardie was excluded from the first game, as form had not been established.

the other thing is, jack lams style when playing flanker is very similar to tanerau latimer, meaning lam could easily be played at No6 making way for ardie to step in at 7.

11 j savea, 15 m banks, 14 c jane was the outside trio for the hurricanes on the SA tour, and now banks has been benched for james marshall.

meanwhile, we have manu samoa wing alapati leiua, who was one of manu samoas best players last year, was one of the hurricanes best players last year, was one of the ITMs best players last year, and hes on the bench for a thrid game straight.

any arguments saying that its cos corey jane is back is redundant, cos jane is just as capable of playing fullback where he started his career.
