All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has come under fire from a South African equal rights rugby group for statements made in a recently released book.

The SARU SACOS Legends group penned an open letter to Hansen regarding comments in Peter Bills' book The Jersey: The Secrets Behind the World's Most Successful Team.

Hansen was quoted in the book saying "rugby wasn't a black man's sport" and South Africa was "the only team in sport that doesn't pick its best team".

The organisation, which was founded to support South African rugby players of colour and oppose the apartheid regime, strongly hit out against the statements, saying it "reeks of a complete ignorance" and that Hansen is ill-informed.

It also incorrectly calls it Hansen's book.

"We are obviously irritated and feel a sense of ire at those who make such simplistic pronouncements and construe these to be indicative of a hackneyed view which shows complete disdain for the hurt and pain experienced by those from the former non-racial SARU SACOS rugby stable," the group wrote.

"While we do not wish to take anything away from your celebrated successes and greatly admired astuteness as a rugby coach, we do offer a word of caution … where rugby men start to venture on terrain such as pronouncing reasons for other countries' poor performance on a sports field."

As part of his research for the book Bills, a respected British journalist, had unprecedented access to the All Blacks during last year's tour by the British and Irish Lions.

Hansen's comments, which were part of a larger statement made of the Springboks, appeared to be a reference to the country's controversial - and divisive - quota system.

By next year's World Cup, 50 per cent of the South African team is required to be made up of players of colour. Many have suggested that despite the good intentions behind the system, it isn't necessarily the best for the national team in terms of being able to compete at the highest level.

“[Late former South African president] Nelson Mandela understood it better than anyone else," Hansen is quoted as saying in the book.

"He knew that the Springboks was a team that could unite the nation. I still believe it is, if they got things right and allowed it to develop naturally, it would. And you would get the right people in the team. In the end it would be a multi-cultural team.

"Rugby wasn't a black man's sport, but it was the sport that would unify the country in a way no other sport or business could."

The book, released in August, included claims from some former All Blacks that the haka has been over-used.

Sir Colin Meads and Kees Meeuws were among the high profile personalities to reveal their own frustrations about the heavy use of the haka. The team's mental skills coach, Gilbert Enoka, has revealed the All Blacks had previously felt "haka ed out" and some "hated" having to constantly perform the Ka Mate version.

All Blacks management declined to comment on the group's letter when approached by the Herald.

I see no problems with what Hansen said. If a person feels so strongly, they need to take a long hard look in the mirror and sort themselves out. This world has gone to the gutter because nobody can be honest. We must always appease liars and egocentric lunatics. Call a spade a spade.

Well what do you know. These incredibly wise men who are having a go at Hansen about “his book” were the same ones who were bitching, years ago, about rugby (and cricket, for that matter) being a white man’s sport. Now, Hansen has said that rugby wasn’t a black man’s sport and they are crapping themselves. WTF? The other interesting thing is the story about the Haka. I maintain that it is an unnecessary load of BS that should be left for the kiwis to do on home soil. They should be grateful if and when invited to perform it when playing in other countries. The fact that it is constantly being forced down the throats of the opponents and spectators in host countries is BS IMO.

The same people who promote transformation also believe in Afro-centrism. This is the belief that Africa is the true source of all knowledge on earth and that Westerners are really beneficiaries of their genius. Some go so far as to teach that black men created white people in laboratories millions of years ago, and that space Yeshua (Jesus) is coming back in a UFO to destroy white people so that black men will rule the world - Muhammad Ali believed this.

However, we must all be offended by Hansen, for speaking the truth as logically as can be spoken.

Matthew 24:10-12 - And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall arise and deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

So who is more correct? Hansen? “Hansen was quoted in the book saying "rugby wasn't a black man's sport" and South Africa was "the only team in sport that doesn't pick its best team".....” Or Lawrence Sephaka? “WATCH: Former Bok Says Rugby Union Needs To Do More To Curb Racism "Rugby; it comes from a difficult place. It was also known as a white sport; Afrikaans white."

One would have thought the new SA Constitution guaranteed equal rights for all - but some wants without merit to be more equal than others and for that purpose wants special favours.

The only time Africa is united is when it is against white people, other races or nationalities. Then is about African pride and the freedom struggle.
For the rest of the time, it is about seeing how much much a tiny minority can rip off the majority. This also happens everywhere in the word- but nothing in comparison to Africa.

In a hundred years, Africa could be like a post-apocalyptic Judge Dredd civilisation with 99% unemployment. Then its time to lock it up, and throw away the key.
Hopefully, something positive happens before things decline too far, but Africa is getting more and more isolated from the rest of the world. China may be the only hope for Africa, and could perhaps become the cheap labour for China in the future...

China will be a lot less supportive, in a practical way, than the West.

Hansen was taken out of context ,and at the time in question wether due to apartheid or preference it seems that rugby wasnt the preferred sport of black people in SA would that be correct ?

As for the Haka which countries would we exclude ? It would be construed as a snub by most and anyways most fans are quite happy with it ,if you dont like it dont fucking well watch it .

The majority of players are quite happy to face the Haka  as its for the players and has fuck all to do with fans.

Soccer will always be the preferred sport by black South Africans. As a matter of fact, it's the number one sport in SA. We don't see the ANC trying to increase participation of whites. Afterall, it needs to be representative for all of us to support the team. Right?

In 2010, white South Africans were bullied into supporting Banana Banana. If you didn't want to participate, you were a racist. If you wanted to support another team, you were racist. Never mind those black supporters of the All Blacks. Equality is never a two-way street anywhere I cast my eyes. Well, I'll give New Zealand credit. It's showing SA how it's done. Again.

WD, ofcourse Hansen were taken out of context.  This is how these idiots roll.  And there are different shades of black in SA. Most prefer football.

Hanson knows what he's talking about. He's been playing against the Boks for years and touring SA for more than a decade. He knows more about what's going on with Saffa Rugby than these fools. Good on him for speaking out. It's very refreshing to see someone standing up for what's right.

@Wardad. “As for the Haka which countries would we exclude ? It would be construed as a snub by most and anyways most fans are quite happy with it ,if you dont like it dont fucking well watch it .” I know full well the principle of don’t watch it if you don’t like it. I preach it often enough on this board when it comes to reading or not reading annoying posts. What I actually wanted to convey was that, by all accounts, there are quite a few kiwis who don’t like the way the Haka has escalated nowadays. All of those, though does not mean that I have any disrespect for the culture and traditions of others. I just do not agree with it being enforced in the way it has been done in recent years and, yes, I do not watch it unless it is a kiwi home game. Honestly. I watched it before the last test against the Boks. And for the record. This Zulu warrior that we suddenly have pisses me off as well. I don’t like it.

Fair enough Ceradyne but I think you will find those ABs were taken out of context too .Untill fairly recently the Haka was only done when on tour [ probably because it was done so crappily ] ,I had to face the NZ army Haka when I was playing in an Australian Army team we had a few Kiwis in our team so we went nose to nose with our Haka !

Which is how it is meant to be ,the IRB should just stick its nose out of it .
