//Getty Images Hansen lauds skipper McCaw Sportal.co.nz - (17/09/2012) - 40 Comments

Coach Steve Hansen lauded the performance of captain Richie McCaw as he reflected on the All Blacks' 21-11 over South Africa in the Investec Rugby Championship test in Dunedin on Saturday night.
McCaw was the sorest of a battered All Black squad on Sunday as he nursed a stinger to his neck and a haemotoma to his thigh, both suffered late in the game.

Hansen said he expected McCaw to be fit to travel to Argentina next Saturday and added that the injuries reflected his commitment.

"The blows he took reflect the work he did. He had a massive test."

Hansen said a decision would be made on whether Dan Carter (strained calf muscle) would be fit to travel to Argentina and South Africa during the week.

He said it was possible that the All Blacks would take three first five-eighths - Carter, Aaron Cruden and Beauden Barrett - on tour and leave one of the five props or a loose forward at home.

"I've told the players to go away for a few days and forget about rugby and spend some time with their families," Hansen said.

"It was a huge physical test and sometimes the flow doesn't go the way you want it to."
Hansen said the All Blacks' relished their first test in the new Forsyth Barr Stadium.

"The boys enjoyed the whole occasion and from our point of view you couldn't ask for a better stadium to play in. No one commented on any problems with the surface so that would suggest that it was pretty good."

Hansen was at a loss to explain the goal-kicking problems suffered by the Springboks.

"Aaron Cruden [four from seven] didn't have too many problems. I guess it's somewhere new to kick in and you've just got to adapt to it. Some guys can, others can't."

Hansen is unbeaten after seven tests as coach and the All Blacks have an almost unassailable lead in the championship with 16 points from four games. Australia have eight, South Africa and Argentina three.

i have watched every single 6nat match and all tests involving the SANZAR teams and IMHO, not one player comes close to McCaw in 2012, this isnt just my opinion, the stats back that up.
he will make the IRB player of the year award again in 2012 and IMHO is the clear front runner to win it as no one else even comes close.

Sasu

Normal for Hansen to say that about his captain.   Lets go furrther and say that McCaw was in fact the best All Black forward on display - bar of course Greyling - but I still believe he was not as prominent in display as normal.   I am afraid your New Zealand loyalty is getting a bit ahead - I do not think that McCaw could justifable player of the year this year.   Too many question marks - I believe.

@clevermike,

theres no denying the man love i got for NZs favourtie son, but after watching every All Blacks game, i honestly and trully believe that in the the IRC for sure and the whole 2012 season worldwide, there is no better player out there at the moment.
when i get the time i will post u his stats for the season which i have done numerous times here and on other forums and ot has always been high and maybe a game where it was there abouts, but take a look at McCaws stats form last weekends test against the Boks compared with vermeulen, alberts and louw,,,

Pos   T/A Pts K/P/R MR CB DB OL TO Tack LO Pen Y/R F Louw 0/0 0 0/0/8 11 0 0 0 0 6/0 0/0 3 0/0 F Alberts 0/0 0 0/0/5 10 0 0 0 1 6/2 0/0 0 0/0 N8 Vermeulen 0/0 0 0/1/9 7 0 0 0 1 5/0 2/0 0 0/0
Pos   T/A Pts K/P/R MR CB DB OL TO Tack LO Pen Y/R F McCaw 0/0 0 0/2/7 46 1 1 0 2 10/1 1/0 0 0/0
McCaw vs Sprinbos loose forwards,,,
McCaw had 7 runs, Bok loosies had 22
McCaw made 46 meters ball in hand, Bok loosies made 28 meters
McCaw made 1 linebreak and tacklebreak (when he knocked francois steyn on his big butt), Boks made zero tackle or line breaks.
McCaw made 2 handaling errors, Boks also made 2
McCaw made 10 tackles and missed 1, Bok loosies made 17 and missed 2
McCaw made 1 lineout take, Boks made 2.
Mccaw conceded zero penalties, Boks considered 3.

im a die hard McCaw fan, but he just outplayed the Bok loose forwards last weekend and thats what i saw whe watching the game every single time (5 times in total,,,,,,,so far).
however while McCaws dominant performance isnt just restricted to this match, its happened all year, both from what ive seen and with the stats to back it up, he has had an unusual high error rate, but this might be because of the fact hes just getting involved a lot more then the norm.
but there are also things that stats cant pick up, like the foloowing play from McCaw,,,
3:31 hougaard kicks the ball down field, McCaw is in the middle of the field near the 40mtr line and races across to apply pressure on JDV gathering the ball, at the breakdown,
3:43 he moves closer to the touchline (All Blacks left) to mark the Bok player standing there unmarked.
3:50 after a beast charge towards the line, McCaw looks up and identifies the Bok numbers to the their right and the cluster of All Blacks around the breakdown which fromed 7 meters from the left of the posts and proceeds to sprint to the left and increas the All Blacks presence
3:57 ruuan passes to morne who then passes to krichner who is now pressured by both McCaw and savea which forces krichner to make a bad pass to habana

McCaw sussed out the situation perfectly and was exactly where he needed to be evrysingle time, often when i rewatch a game, usually around the 3rd or 4th time, i usually just watch McCaw to see his actual work and examples like these happen at least 3-4 times a game. i call these the stuff that goes unnoticed and when added on what he usually brings to the table, like what was recorded statistically and so on, has me feeling little doubt about that IRB player of the year award.
not denying the love i have for McCaw has me seriously one eyed, but i do make an effort to be imaprtial, even if its not obvious, LMAO, :P but mark this post, cos IMO McCaw will make the player of the year nomination list, and fingers crossed from my end that he makes it, :o)

McCaw is a terrible player, truly very average. But his love affair with the reffs is too useful to contemplate dropping him. Added to this he is extremely arrogant and smug.

Sas, it doesn't take much to make POTY, 2009 was a terrible year for him, he was brutally outplayed in all but one game, yet made POTY. What of Brussow? More laughable bias.

You seem to be clutching at straws a lot. I suppose his lack of response to Greyling's cheap shot could be misconstrued as arrogance.......

wfunston,

Mccaw is a damn good player, a Player of the year award good player. He does everything on the field, big and small, and yes, he even strecthes the rules a bit. Anyone would want him on their team....... But when you have a Rugby world and a country that has their heads so far up his arse if they had beards it would tickle his throat, you get the pendulum swinging just as far the other way. That's where you get people like Requiescat.

We need to sort out Mccaw when he plays here in South Africa. I think if our forwards could dominate in New Zealand, that the tiny New Zealand pack is going to be in for some beating.

Some of our other forwards are coming back into the mix, and if we choose the best backline available- minus morne and kirchner it could be a tough data at the office for Richie and co.

As for Richie personally, we need to ruck him out of any ruck when he tries(does) slow possesion or is being creative.

History will answer many of our questions.

Firstly, SA have struggled to contain RM for ten years so what makes us think this new bunch of guys can do it now? This guy maybe slowing down - only a little but his leadership on the field is worth 10 points every game to the AB's

Secondly, reflect back and find out when we have dominated the AB forwards and then apply those same tactics...yes? However the trick is to do this game in and game out and that my fellow SA brothers is something that our beloved Boks have never been able to do for most of the last 20 years. So again I ask whats changed to think that we can turn around this situation?

Thirdly, history gives us clear messages and one thingis for sure and that is the fact that we havent dominated the AB's for any long periods of times forthe last 20 years so I ask what makes you think we can do it now? Or is it the fact that because we had a good game against an average performing AB team that we now the nucleus and gameplan and ability to compete?

History tells me that consistency, intensity on every game and the combination of experience, composure, leadership, intelligence, coaching, mentoring and belief all combined will give SA the ability to match the AB's for dominance.

If anyone thinks that we are all of a sudden at the precipice of a massive gain on our national team then you may be in for a surprise or two in the next while. Sadly Shark we are not allowed to ruck that was taken out of the game many years ago so I suggest we keep away from the illegal stuff as that is costing us games and will cost us our reputation

sorry saSUE but until mccheat plays to the rules he gets zip credit. Please note this name he has earned for himself is wdely used and not only by South Africans. I would hate any of our Bok captains to earn such a name and of course they haven't.

We will never know how good mcaaaaaw is since he will not play by the rules. Pocock with his hands in the ruck right in front of BL was doing a job but t was illegal. any fetcher type player allowed to infringe the rules would look good.

But well said Mike, mcaaaw dispite these fancy stats was quiet and took a pounding. Lets hope saSUE and co keep going on with this blind hero worship and we could be lucky and see mcaaaaw at the nex world cup.

Those stats, if true , are misleading in the extreme. It is common cause that the Bok loose trio dominated the abs as did the Bok pack, The ab loose trio got a good hiding and wee mcaaw was a broken man at the end. Please also note that this was a new Bok loose trio!!!!! What brazen nonsense to now claim how good mcaaaaw was. Reminds me of the boks or bulle wining a game and praising wee matfield who had done zip, to the skies. Hero worship blinds the oaks!

Rather than worrying about our reputaton ou ragtad, a nz  apologistof note, should be telling mccheat where to get off. Hahahahaha.

ou ragtad should also understand that history goes back further than 20 years. he clearly has raised the white flag of suurender to the abs. Our post isolation problems have been the politically driven failure to adopt the merit principle. Hence instead of Jake contiuing with his fine side and going from strength to strengh we had the buffoon pdv appointed. We could have dominated the last 4 years but for that. Also we are in a situation now where Meye has to, and is, rebuilding. This is just one example of political interference -something the abs dont have worry about.

Also how many tests have we lost due to the get the jarpies campaign. So ragtad just bear these few things in mind.

'Sharkbok wee mcaaaw hardly made it off the field in one piece - I fear it will only get tougher form him.

Provided Meyer is left with a free hand and we nail cheating refs and get them removed from the IRB panel things will look up. Go for any bent refs Hoskins and co. Dont tolerate it.  Pick on merit.

Dorkie dumboes comments are to daft to respond to. Jallopy you need repairs real bad.. and NO the abs are not a respeted rugby nation - the BL saga finally burst that bubble. To be respected they must clean up their act. Can they do that is the quesion.

Beeno keeping it real.

funnystone that photo of mcaaaaaw is about as smug as it comes. If he were honest he would have said the Boks whipped us real good and only diabolical kicking from morne saved us. But we must get some credit for that acttually as we made sure we practised in the stadium and put the Boks on an out of town field in the rain. Smart nz planning.

My advice to Card would be to ignore these so called stats (you could of course get another set elsewhere) everyone knows the Bok loosies, a brand new formation, outplayed the abs big time as did the Bok pack as a whole.

No more nonsense about macaaaaaw please oaks. Its bad enough loosing a game where you were  20 points the better side and then having all this buffoonery re mcaaaaw.

Boks keep playing like this and it is inevitable that the wins will come. The writing is on the wall.

Beeno, it really sticks in your McCraw just how good the ABs are doesn't it?

We haven't capitulated like the Boks after winning a World Cup; we just keep on winning and you just hate that don't you? Another poster said ALL teams have struggled after winning a World Cup but check out the ABs form after 1987. We still dominated for 3 years!

Your BBBs didn't dominate the ABs. At best they might have gained parity in certain areas but we pushed you around in the scrums and stole a couple of your sacred lineouts so any talk of you smashing us is a pure pipedream on your part.

The thing is, we will get better and your lot played as well as they ever will. No brains and little talent!

Before you start wittering on about your so called depth and injured players, here's a newsflash..... You don't have any depth! Your second string team has been the whipping boys of many a NH team on the EOYTs for years.

The ABs send second stringers to the NH all the time and guess what? We still win!

So forget about any Bok domination for a while at least, if ever. We've been taking you to the cleaners for the last 20 years and don't plan halting this any time soon.

Come back to me when you get anywhere near our win-loss record. We'll both be long gone when that happens!

Bean Brain its so obvious u never played rugby & dont understand the game. In what way does McAw cheat? Please define what it means 2 "cheat" in a rugby context. If u mean breaking the rules, well, that is what penalties & free kicks are for so what u are calling "cheating" is actually helping the other team. The Springboks give up more peanlties and free kicks on averge than Australia or NZ so does that make us the worst "cheats" according to a rugby n00b like u??

Please dont get all emotionel and tearful and just answer the question. How does someone cheat at rugby?

Bwahahahhahahahahaha dumb got dumber. dorkie ask yourself how come mcaaaaaaw is called mccheat. Ask yourself about BL. Your heroes set the benchmark.

Just because you dont get penalised dorkie doesnt mean you are not cheating all it means is either the ref is not competent, just missed it or is a cheat as well. When a player is a seriel breaker of the rules he earns the name cheat. Hence we have the name mccheat. Not a Beeno invention dorkie but an internationally used term to describe mccaw. Sorry but if the hat fits one has to wear it.

The joke is we have a couple of oaks, saffas, actally lauding this guy. Hilarious really. The bird brained kiwis are of course deluded about him but as I said we hope that long continues -at least to the next WC.

The only way out for nz is to clean up their act. If they do that I will be delighted and among the first to welcome them back into the fold of respected rugby nations. Todate there is no sign of that.

Beeno back to teaching dorkie rugby 101 yet again!  By the way why didnt you simply sign up here as duke?

So if McAw breaks the rules so much that he earned the name "mccheat" (which sounds like something u made up cuz Ive never heard it) then why do the ABs still manage to win if they conseding so many penaltys? They must be even better than we think if they have a penalty machine in there side and r still no 1 in the world!

Bean Brain u still sound like a idiot who never played rugby & doesnt understand the game but hangs around a rugby forum anyway.....a bit like yr buddy Retradcat.

To answer yr last question, the main reason i didnt sign up as "Duke" is cuz Im not this Duke person u think I am. LMAO!

Now, in the last two games the Springboks have played, we have seen EE headbutting sharpe and Greyling's cheapshot on McCaw. Two bans from two games! These are not isolated incidences either. Jallopy I have to be excused for thinking you were dokie dumbo. I mean who would think two such dumbos existed in the world at the same time!!!! If you are not dorkie, and you may well be,  be comforted then that you are not alone.Hahahahahahaha

The term mccheat is widely used  jallopy - take a look at other websites. if you have not seen this you are eithe new to the game or lieing.

Sorry to disappoint you but mcaaaw would not make the Bok side. Firstly we do have our moral standards oaks and secondly he is simply not good enough. as I said the Boks loose trio had the abs loose trio for breakfast and that inludes mcaaw.

Lady MO(NH) as you knwo I like to call a sapde a sapde. not for me the stretching of the rules story etc. I am shocked by a lady of your unquestioanable distinction supporting this nz lout!!!!

As for ragtad please oak read my post re myer should invest in louw as you have little grasp regarding loose forwrd play.

funnystone you mention a cheap shot by Greyling who admittedly took the law into his won hands given mcaaaws indescrertions moments before - for which of course he was not penalised. Couldnt happen to a more deserving oak. The brief sentence for Greyling must have happened because of the mitigating circumstances. Bwahhahahahahahaha  - then you compound your folly by mentioning etzebteh and the head but that never was. He also only got two weeks as the head buttt missed. Talk about storms in tea cups!!! Funnystone the abs with their spear tackles and high tackles just below the kneck etc etc are well known for their dirty play. So no need for the all blacks to call the kettle black!!

I trust all have been suitably corrected and are wiser for the experience.

So more nonsense oaks and Lady MO(NH) - please its just not right to praise a player of this dubious reputation. Thieves being lauded - whatever next!!!

Hi Beeno, I respect your opinion I was just giving you mine. I think no one can deny the impact he makes on a game every time he plays, also he's been awarded the IRB player of the year three times I think, this means to me that others have the same opinion as me as to how good he is.

He's a thinker on the pitch, he is every where he is needed whether clearing out a ruck or in support of a player he knows where he is needed. He has a great knowledge of the rules which allow's him to push them to the limit. His fitness allows him to be everywhere  and the times he turns over a ball even with the new interpretation is amazing he excels in the art. I think the reason he is talked about so much is (IMHO) he makes life very difficult for any opposition.

Every era a great player comes along and the history books will show that he is a great player, to me it does not matter that he does not play for my country I give credit where it's due.

Lady MO(NH) is one of many jallopy. Lets face it all this talk of pushing boubdaries etc is fudging the issue.

The real question has to be how good is mccheat if he didnt cheat. I suggest not nearly as good as some here imagine.

I recall an incident many years ago. Ftzpatrick a mcaaaw type player actually got embarrassed in a test with the Boks about the ref. The penalty count against the boks was something like 22/1!! naturally the abs won the test but how good were they really. Same story with mcaaaaaaw.

What is certain is he could not make our Bok side. None of their loose trio could. From what we saw on Saturday what nz forward could make the Boks?  Cant think of any really.

By the way I think my smug avatar re Jake is a nice counter to the smugness of wee mcaaaaaaaaaaaaw.

On the topic of being guilty of being a cheat. We live in a democratic society that states everyone is innocent until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt. So all fetchers/openside flankers are only cheat each time they give away a penalty. The problem in rugby is inconsistent refeering. It is not consistent in the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemishpere, it is not even consistent from individual referee to individual referee. Until such time as a single referee interpretation is applied fans, players and coaches will be frustrated. Mccaw has a very high standing in the game and referees are intimidated by his legendary status. Sometimes he even corrects the referees interpretation as he understands the rules of rugby more than referees, and has even overturned referee decisions on the field. He is an excellant rugby player- according to H.Meyer the best that has ever played the game.

spot on Sharkbok!

Refs like McCaw because:

1. McCaw likes refs and they know he has  their welbeing at heart! They know McCaw is there to protect them if they get attacked by players or fans (cough cough ahem ahem)!

2. McCaw is a very clean player and does not go out of his way to hurt people! (not like some dirty players we know like Tugiri, what's his name from Ireland, Quade Cooper, Phil Waugh, Rougerie and now lately Dean Greyling and many more sneaky players (you know who you are) not mentioned)

3. McCaw gives refs FREE lessons on how to ref as he understands the rules better than them. Infact the refs should pay him every time they ref whatever game he plays considering ALL the things he does on their behalf - what say Beeno and pussyCat!

@ben10,

nope, those were the actual stats, so im not surprised by ur awe laced shock, LMAO, :P,,and its hardly misleading from what i saw, cos the Boks forwards might have gained the upperhand on the AB forwards as a whole (just) it dosent negate McCaws efforts in the slightest who really did have a ripper.
like i said, each to their own and while McCaw is definatley a hero of mine, i can only report from what ive seen.
FYI if u think those stats were shocking, u should see what hes done all year when compared to every looseforward in the 6nat teams and IRC. lets just say im expecting more IRB consspiracy theories from u and the unofficial silent member of the pussycat doos, LMFAO, :P

Just shows how corrupt this game is if a richie mcCHEAT can win POTY award. He is a smug cheat just like kieren read and I think SA will own them in next game. TheABs are on the slide now that hansens taken over and its going to be a funny funny day when the cheats dont win due to rigging referee outcomes... Anyway no doubt hands down that Oz all recognise mccaw as the rugby worlds biggest cheat.

Redsman, "when the cheats dont win due to rigging referee outcomes" you mean like Wayne Barnes 2007 RWC and he was caught in a bar mimming to friends how he got rid of the ABs and he was also seen in the stands RWC 2011 jumping up and down with joy and fist air/pumping when France scored!

It's called envy and jealousy Redsman - maybe you should change your Avitar to Greensman!

Thanks Redsmen you saved me the trouble of answering poor hakwa and saSUE who cannot see the wood from the trees.

ou jallopy even denies that mcaaaw is nickmamed mccheat etc. Its all denialism really.

As I said the only thing left for the abs to do is clean up their act. That however is unlikely unless forced on them. They need I suppose to be put under judicial management. Fist thing, in terms of good governanace, is to draw up a good ethics policy and have extensive training as to what ethics is as the oaks downunder have forgotten what ethics is  Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha their idol is mccheat!! Bwahahahahahahahahahaha .

No its not good enough and these oaks must be told this. Hopefully the IRB is going to keep a close eye on them after the BL debacle. SA, Oz and the Argies will need to apply pressure on the abs nz rugby to clean up their act.

Imagine how nice it would be to not have to discuss these very distasteful things but unfortunately this is spoliling the beautiful game. The ultimate solution may however rest with science. Genetic re-engineering that removes the nonethical DNA and replaces it with ethical DNA.

No mcaaaw and the ab loose trio were outplayed by the Bok loosies dispite any dubious stats suggesting otherwise. wee mcaaaw would not make the Boks and Meyer was actually quite cunning to make those remarks as it all helps to keep mcaaaaw in the ab side which is exactly what suits us given he is over the hill. They did the same to us re matfield of course. Bwahaahahahahhahahaahahahhahaha

hakwa, plz dont try & muddy the waters with silly things like cold hard facts. Actual statistics or real life tables like u put up will only confuse the likes of Bean Brain, Retardcat and Redtwit.
