There was considerable comment about his game against Montpellier. So what's the verdict? He was always quick and he showed that in his long break and a kick chase. He also seemed more confident about his body, actually competing, if not very effectively, on the deck. But he remains a light framed chap, there is no evidence of the usual bulking up.

He made a break when he stepped Bismarck who was rushing up and good pace exploiting it. In the first Racing try he got inside Tuitavake, while Frans was somewhat impeded by the dummy runner. Frans got across and pulled him down but Goosen got the ball away to the outside man for a try....nice stuff.
He also landed a big penalty and cleared with some long line kicks.
The tactical kicking was less impressive...two poor cross kicks, one charged kick  and a weak up and under could have been more costly. And he remains fragile in the tackle.
Probably the best solution is to leave Goosen making a case at Racing. He seems animated and happy in the team. If the playoffs work out and he continues to build and, crucially, if he avoids injury....he may just enjoy a mid career recall to international rugby.

I used to rate the lad highly until his test debut ,it seems the emotion inherent in playing for his beloved country got to the lad somewhat .Good to hear hes doing OK .

Yep he was very nervous botching some easy kicks...and then he got hurt, it seemed by a breath of wind. In the end he had no confidence in taking contact....he seems to be over that now.

Mozart - your ordinary BS evaluation.  Goosen had an excellent game and he was excellent in all games he played in this year for Racing irrespective of which position he played in - if you in fact watched the game - did you miss the comments on the commentator where he said this year Goosen was the most valuable player of Racing?  He was a major reason why Racing wiped the floor with Montpellier.   I saw the game and the difference between the two teams were in their backline and Goosen as pivot at flyhalf.   How did you like the piss-poor tackle on Goosen by Fat Fransie which resulted in the ball lay-off that led to the one Racing try?  He dragged Fransie for meters.     The way you tried to justify that tackle flop by Fat Fransie is hilarious.

He has always had it. Just needed investment...but Meyer was a short sighted coach. Look at his treatment of JJ.
Goosen is and always has been a class act. He should be in the Bok squad or starting at 10 for the A side ahead of useless Brummer

Pity we never really saw any of his so called class while playing for the Cheetahs.
Snippets of some good play here and there but never really anything for us to sit up and pay much attention to.

CC - Just a question.   In 2013 the Cheetahs went to Super Rugby play-offs because of very good backline performances and playing comprehensive rugby - they in fact missed going to the semis because of a missed try conver tion in the last minute of the game.  Did  Goosen play no role in that?

 2013?
The Cheetahs had an excellent defence coach at the time and that made the difference ... Goosen contributed to their effort sure ... that is for the 4 matches he actually played in 2013 ... but then again so did the entire team.
Goosen is NOT the reason for their success that year. I know your trying to sell that but I'm not buying into it.
He had a few good moments ... but wasn't ever able to sustain his performance consistently over the entire season ... an injury in March put a dampener on the rest of the season for this injury prone wannabe.
He missed playing for the Boks that season because of it.
There are plenty Goosen types out there. They are a dime a dozen. I honestly do not understand why your so fixated with this wannabe.

As fixated as Mozart is with the talentless Fat Fransie so you are with Wannabe Goosen.
Look elsewhere for your Bok saviour, Mike ... it isn't coming from this chump ...

CC

I am not fixated on any player - I look at performances - not the twaddle produced by others.   In the first instance maybe you should check about Goosen playing in 2013 for the Cheetahs.  After every match Mozart wrote an injury report on Goosen - without any real injury being incurred - I even think he was hoping for injuries that did not exist.   However - the injury incurred - mentioned by you - was in March 2012 in a match against the Highlanders when he scored a long-distance try - not in 2013 when he played in virtually every Super Rugby game.

Now lets get to the issue of performance – to which you are obviously  averse.   With you it seems as if you support players based on personal prejudice and are against others for the same reason.  When I write something I try and give examples of where players perform well and when I criticize players I give examples as well.

I think your opinion is that Jantjies is the Springbok saviour – but I do not think that Goosen is – all I do is credit him with good performances and criticize him when he failed.   Goosen was is the past very injury-prone perhaps because he played Super Rugby at the age of 19 already – but this year there were no injuries.  However, there is one difference between him and Jantjies – he suffered from injuries  – but never failed under pressure.   Jantjies – although not as inujury-prone – often failed under pressure - even in some matches this year.

Goosen showed bags of talent but he was extremely young and picked up a few injuries.
Wiki says he is 89 kg so not too bad when compared to the Crude.
I find I often have to warn the knee jerking brigade not to write off 20 year olds.

CC you are wrong as usual, he was very good for an average Cheetahs side......he was also very good for the Boks

Injury played its part, but he seems to have moved on from the prolonged injury issues

I good Bok coach would have him in the equation - stupid not to

No Mike ... he was injured in April 2012 playing against the Highlanders.
He was then injured in March 2013 during a Cheetahs training camp in Sydney, which took him out for the rest of the super rugby season and ruined any chance he had to play for the Boks.

Check it for yourself, Mike.
You and I both know how "objective" you are when it comes to assessing a player fairly. For example ... your take on Alberts is twisted and smacks of utter ignorance ... but then again what's knew ...
Vermeulen too has now made your Alberts list. You had me in stitches when I saw your latest "assessment" of the man.
You cannot be taken seriously ...

CC - BS story about Alberts.   How many tackles did Alberts made in a year - about as many as good loosies made in a month.   What was his missed tackle ratio - in most matches hovering between 30 and 40%.   Have he ever recovered a tackole ball - never, has he ever protected a ball in a tackle situation - never.  His average territory gain when carried balls was less than 2 meters per carry.  Those are all functions of loosies - but Alberts was one of the laziest player I ever saw on a rugby field.   I never said Vermeulen was in any way in the Alberts list.   Alberts was always lazy - Vermeulen the exact opposite.  What I did say is we can have one slow-paced loosie - not three like at present.   I accept the Goosen injury situation - thanks for the info.

The Alberts I saw was anything but lazy.
The Alberts I saw was an absolute demolition machines ... an essential part of the Bok team.
An awesome player.
The Alberts you saw was tainted by the stats you've infested you brain with. To you it's all about stats. To me it's what I see the man do on the field.
You stand alone here, Mike. I very much doubt you'd find a SINGLE person who'd agree with your foolish stats filled assessment on Alberts.

You are completely delusional.
Let me be so bold as to challenge anyone on this board to come forth with an assessment on Alberts that match yours.
Anyone at all!!!!!!
No Mike ... you were prepared to argue regarding Goosen and his injury ... only to find out that you actually had your facts all jumbled up ... only to discover that you didn't know what you were talking about ... AT ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!
One great big thumb suck ...
Most of your so called objective assessments follow the same route ... and that is that they're riddled with misleading stats and topped up with an assortment of thumb sucking.
That is why I say ... you can't be taken seriously.

Neither can you been taken seriously - I am afraid.    Your take on Alberts is absolute crap.  His low tackle count and non-activity at breakdown points was notorious - his ball carries mostly crap.  He was neither a lock nor a loosie - fat and slow and a low - activity player.  Only a fool can be deceived by that one.

Well said CC, Alberts when he was healthy was the first loosie on the Boks list...he made immense contributions to our rucks  and mauls...and so often was the player to initially breach the defence.

Making massive contribution to rucks and mauls - when?  he got to the breakdown points after the ball was already gone - how stupid are his supporters for not really seeing what he was up to.   Remember the famous missed tackle on Read in the Ellis Park test and later Alberts falling over his own feet instead of trying to recover a tackle ball at his feet.     However, this thread is not about Fattest Alberts - it is about Goosen - whom one of our members swear cannot play at flyhalf.    The chap suddenly avoided it like a plague - while his alter ego tried his utmost to  present a false presentation as to what happeed during the game making Fat Fransie a hero after a disastrous display.  Both are egg-colectors and each is really illiterate from a rugby perspective.
