Apart from make some regulation tackles, I have not seen much from him in the last 2 tests other than be a decoy runner when Morne is looking for Leroux.

Delande or JDV are needed asap. Both are bigger and faster and have more impact on the advantage line. From what I have seen both are better distributors than Serfontein.

Serfonntein rarely saw the ball - because the idiot at flyhalf always tried to get the ball to Le Roux - hoping that something will happen that way.  No variation - utterly predictable.  It work in both tests - the second one less effectively than in the first.
Serfontein's role was basically confined to defense - in respect of which he wa very good.

Not to mention the fact that he broke the advantage line just about every time he ran, which was always in traffic......one only needed to listen to the Sky commentators who raved about him.......had a great test debut as a starter and was one of the better players in the second test

He was dog ordinary in the tests. Huge hype as usual, but missed Cuthbert twice for a try and failed to stop Roberts in a hard ask situation. But his running is the big missing piece, he is about as dangerous as baby powder. Here are his S15 running stats:

5...30...0...2

9...14...0...3

4...24...1...0

10...9...1...2

7...33...0...1

6...14...0...1

6...20...0...2

7...41...1...2

13..41..0...1

6....7...0...0

6...20...0..2

7...35..1...1

6...37..1...2

10..26..0...2

We read.... runs....metres...clean breaks....defenders beaten

Several things are apparent. First in 14 games he has gained only 351 metres. Divide that by his 101 runs and he is running at an abysmal 3.48 metres per run.

With 21 defenders beaten he only beats a defender every 5 runs. And with 5 clean breaks....it takes him 20 runs to make a clean break....horrible numbers for a young centre.

Pealing the onion one more layer.....look at the realationship between clean breaks and defenders beaten.....only one quarter of his defenders beaten result in a clean break, using the stats. But if you look at the number of times he has made a clean break and beaten a defender....ie made a good enough beat to generate a clean break as opposed to being put in space.....that number is 4. So out of 101 runs he has beaten a defender well enough to make a clean break 4 times!!!!!!!!!!!

These are season long numbers not a snap shot and they are consistent with what we know....Serf steps inside and will sometimes beat the first tackle but it rarely amounts to much. All players have more defenders beaten than breaks...but Serf is definitely  to an extreme. Hence Steppie.

One might also observe that while he has had very low yardage games he has never cracked 50 metres....more evidence of so much labour with so  little result.

Let me say this when I first heard about this guy I was very hopeful and tried to read positives into his first games. But pretty soon I realized his limitations. He seems like a nice kid, and conducts himself well.....but he isn't the JdV successor.

He seems like many centres in South Africa. They bulk up and then lose the ability to step.
He is a strong player for his size, but then he is not that big when compared to JDV, Delande and Frans Steyn who are main contenders for the 12 position.

You are the greatest BS spreader ever on this site.  You go on quoting stats on Serfonmtein - but you refuse to do the same for Francois Steyn.     The latter's stats really reads like a nightmare compared to the above stats of Serfontein.
By the way you are stretching the truth about Serfontein's defense to the limit and in fact misrepresenting the issue.  First of all the so-called missed tackles on Cuthbert. There was a number of missed tackles in the case of his try.   He broke inwards - meaning that Serfontein was in a very bad position to make an initial tackle - even when he made an attempt.  The missing  Cuthbert "twice" is an outright lie - and is in fact contradicted statistically as well.  Similarly is the incident invovling Roberts the truth.
Calm down - you are back to the fabrication stage again.  Nobody really wants to see De Villiers replaced at this stage - so there is no need to panic and start spreading BS at this stage.
Sharksbok
Mozart is talking BS.  Having looked at the game again serfontein had a very good game - and that is a fact had a very good game - both on defense and attack.

Rubbish he missed Cuthbert in a standard open field tackle. A few phases later Cuthbert crashed over the top of Serf for a try....fact. A good game on attack, man you have low standards.
Nothing about the post above is bs.....it's fact and logical analysis. You should study it as a model for your woeful statistical efforts scumbag.

Playing centre is not about stepping, it's about your running lines. Serfontein is very ordinary as an individual, but at the Bulls they were playing a very basic gameplan with a very laterial and static backline; the individual is not going to do very much. But for the Boks, it was his big opportunity to put the criticism to rest. He is a solid go-to guy if you need to fill a gap in a pinch, much like Wynand was, but he will never be anything more.

For the critics blaming Morné? Your flyhalf is to do two things primarily: kick and pass. There is supposed to be movement around him to give him options. Imagine if a quaterback had nobody running routes to break free from defenders? Just static targets that are well marked? Would you honestly expect him to 'make something happen'? Idiocy in the extreme, but that's what Bok rugby is all about. Serfontein is in fact above average for the quality of centres we have been producing the past thirthy years, which says alot. No movement and your attack CREATES no gaps, no opportunities. If the defence isn't forced to make decisions and have their shape stressed, they will stop you each and every time. The centres are THE focal point in creating space, period. On Saturday the Bok centre pairing failed spectacularly, as I predicted it would earlier in the year for these two players. Your 12 is supposed to give you momentum, and Roberts made a total mockery of Serfontein in handing him a masterclass in how to play inside centre. No flyhalf could do much more with such horridly substandard play from these centres. You speak of Frans as the lesser of the two; last I recall Serfontein literally exploded when he tried to stop Frans head on. Frans, the same player who routinely sucks three defenders easily out of play in a single run gaining huge momentum and ground. A wrecking ball smashing the defensive line. Nobody comes close to Frans' power, though Roberts and Nonu are right up there; nobody else is in the same league as these three. Why Meyer doesn't select a specialist at 13 is beyond me. Playing games here is going to jeopardize our chances at the World Cup!

Maybe, for the sake of ou Maaikie's health, you should start a thread to warn  him that he read this thread at his own risk and that he should consider taking some Prozac and perhaps a beta blocker before he read it.

Alucard welcome back - great to have your comments.
What is always missed is that if you gave a half back pair that pose no threat on attack the defence can concentrate on the centers - hence the heavy traffic Snaspter speaks about. Add also the fact that our loosies are powerful but not fast. Hence no great danger of them making a break. The whole pictire will chance if guys like reinaach, Faf, Goosen, Pollard come on stream.Fourie Du Preez ued to have an impressive break but one is not seeing that these days.So I don't agree that a flyhalf should never attck the gainline. Watch wee beau barrat and the crude. They are threats on attack. Morne  is a good flyhalf but not the complete package one hopes to have. In Pollard , Goosen and even Lambie we will in the future have better rounded flyhalves.
Jan has had a reallygood series again the powerful Welsh center combo. Just out of the under 20 ranks he is doing very well and his defemce was great. Showed against Wales that he is an international class center who will only get better.
Sharkbok you refer to Jan  - "not that big when compared to JDV, Delande". That is incorrect as Jan is already 98 kg . Jean is 100 and Allende  103kg. Not much in it. By next year jan will hit 100 kg.
Denny, Christians are sinners saved by GRACE. No one is good except God. Hope that helps. Anybody hoping to make Heaven because they are good is enough is doomed to disappointment. Apart from Christ nobody has ever lived on earth who would come even remotely close. Yes not even St Beeno the pious !

Goosen and Lambie....hell HasBeen surely you aren't incapable of learning like the OOM. Goosen is too fragile and Lambie is an ordinary guy who has a reasonable rugby brain. The Sharks improved last year when they brought in Butch and shifted Lambie to centre. Lambie was out of ideas by the time he was moved from flyhalf.

Jan never had a good series against Wales....he never made one clean break and missed Cuthbert twice in one move for a try. You guys judge players based on your preconceived notions. This is a bog ordinary player....no better than Wyand Olivier.

I'll always be around from time to time, I see you've been easily schooling Michael!

@Sasuke: Morné has actually played consistently well for the Boks, there has never been a big jump in form either direction. I would go so far as to say he is by some distance one of the most consistent players in the team. He has always been solid on defence, and has always had the ability to hit a gap. He has always had that quick long pass amongst his other tools. It's the spectatures who are wildly inconsistent with their analysis of him. If the Bok's score some tries then they pick one random individual to adorn with endless praise. Take the Loss to Australia in Australia in 2011. Morné and Lambie played roughly 50 minutes each. Morné kept the Boks in touch with the boot, and made no less than two deep breaks, even bamboozling Beale with clever stepping to send JP clear down the touchline. He even made his tackles. Lambie on the otherhand was always very deep and slow, avoided two tackles - one being a Cooper break where he actually brushed shoulders with Lambie, a threat that Adi Jacobs of all people had to stop because Lambie was a coward - he also had three charge downs, two nearly ending in a try conceded and when Aplon tore the Aussie defence to shreds and left Lambie with one man to deal with he froze and got turned over. That was the moment we lost that test. But because the bok pack, led by Deysel was surging forward with huge drives and they got more desperate, the spectator sensed it was Lambie that made the difference. That in-spite of the fact that never played so much as one ball in all of those surges forward. After the game Morné was blamed for the loss and Lambie was heralded as the Bok's only hope for World Cup success! Yes, the media used this loss to put pressure on Morné. This is how it's always been. The media always have an agenda and the fans are always too gullible and stupid to see through it or simply cannot fathom the honesty or integrity to speak the truth. Just mindless relativism.

@Beeno: A flyhalf needs to fix his man, in other words keep the defence from sliding out. If you watch Cruden, he often runs head-on at whichever defender he chooses and passes at the last moment. That's the purpose of a flyhalf on attack. This keeps the main defender rooted and his outside support unable to move for fear of leaving a gaping hole. The All Blacks will have options outside of Cruden/Carter/Beauden, and that's the point. Their backs and forwards will run better angles at pace, attacking shoulders not bodies and that creates problems for the defence. I posted pictures of every attacking movement Morné was involved in in the Dunedin loss of 2012, and in two red zone movements Jean wasn't even facing the right direction! The players were static and scattered randomly in a make-shift line in all movements. In two of them Morné was obstructed by forwards and had to dart back into heavy traffic. This has ALWAYS been the key problem for South Africa. We have never had a flyhalf crisis, more a centre crisis. It's always a lack of movement. This has the effect of allowing the defence to identify the lone runner well in advance and bunch up in numbers. This then suffocates the halfbacks and slows down our attack after two or three phases. Willie's best attribute and the one thing that makes him tr uly dangerous is that he draws and passes. He has better sense of the defence than any centre we have ever produced and attacks shoulders whilst creating space.

As per Du Preez, he had a good break in the first Welsh test. Of all the scrumhslves we have, he is the best technically and by and extraordinary margin the most intelligent.

Moz, Olivier could hold his ground. Serfontein has been overpowered by all the best centres he has encountered; Frans, Nonu and Roberts to name but three. Olivier at his peak was the form 12 of Super rugby for two years. I don't see anything like that coming from Serf. He reminds me more of Lambie in the way that he is passive, slow and too frail for the position. Has no pass and nothing in his bag of tricks. I don't understand the hype at all. Another example I suppose of bleating before it's fact and talking their way into a face full of egg.

My biggest reservation about Jan Van Serfontein is that he seems to lack speed given his young age, and that I have not seen him run any angles, and his stepping seem slow to get the half breaks in traffic.
At his age Jean Devilliers, Frans Steyn and Delande had/have the speed of wings, and had even played on the wing.
He does not dominate the advantage line in traffic like the other mentioned three. I think he is a useful backup, but not a forerunner like these 3. Although having him on the bench does limit options as he is only a 12. When he played on the wing for the Boks he was a disaster.

Jean no longer has the speed of a wing, he never had express anyway - note him being chased down along the touchline in 2004 by Dunning. But he is fast enough for a 12. Speed is useful I suppose, but hitting angles is more important, in that you hit the nail on the head Sharkbok. I haven't seen any distributing skills from Serf either, and you can start to understand why the Bulls were struggling for fluency on attack. He is much like Lambie, just completely underwhelming and with no bite or attitude.

Here's a little reminder for you Saffex; you said Serf has never been dominated:
