I do not support statistics as they miss many contexts, but the one piece of statistics that interested me was tackles and missed tackles. 

 Dont talk rubbish matfiled is the greatest lock ever and never ever shaded in the lineouts. 
Jan tackled exceptionally well. I see his center partner wee victor as almost as good apart from going backwards meters in the tackle.  Dis aaron Smith steal a lineout? Was it against victor. I know we lost three in a row. 

Beeno, our lineout record was 100% between Strauss and Matfield. Then Bismarck comes on and we lose three in a row. How does it make sense to squarely blame Matfield for that?

Which stats did you use?  The above info is not in line with the stats used by ESPN - which most people on this site use.   
ESPN gave the tackles made by Matfield as 17 and the missed tackles 3.   Other stats are also questionable.
I have in the past says that it is often enough not tackles that counts - but more the quality of the tackles.    Matfield's tackles are low quality tackles and there is normally quick ball recovery from those.    

Yeah and how many tackles has Jean missed this year......he used to be ok in this department but the old man is no longer making his tackles and is offering nothing on attack other than the crash ball.....its time for Jean to go NOW  

Jean de Villiers has been a great servant of South African rugby but it's becoming increasingly difficult to justify his place in the team as he's no longer the best in his position.

Well done to Jean for reaching the milestone of 100 tests after the terrible start he had to his teat career. I say give Jean these last two tests . . . so it doesn't look like we just let him get to 100 and then dumped him . . . and let's pick some new blood on the year end tour. That will allow Jean to retire with a bit of dignity and a magnificent 102 tests under his belt.

Jannie didn't miss 8 tackles. Matfield stole 2 lineouts. Steppie didn't make 24 tackles......you should stick with your instincts Cheezy and avoid the stats.

matfield a;lso slost two line outs - you so conveniently forget about.   The quality of tackles made by Matfield was gen erally poor - the quality of Coetzee top notch.          

I doubt Jannie missed eight tackles because he does not attempt that many tackles, even though he does miss most of his tackles. He must the worst tackler in Springbok history

Jannie is the wrong shape for tackling....his huge barrel chest bounces the other guys off. Who ever thunk Jannie would still be in and  Bismarck would be struggling on the bench.

How right you are - Jannie is the wrong shape - or rather he is so out of shape - he lasts two or three scrums and then goes into retreat.    Well past his prime - your national treasure - I am afraid.

No nation uses the term ....a great servant of.....more often than South Africans. It's never heard in the States for example. Hackneyed and over used it probably has subliminal links to our past and should be gone.
As for easing Jean out.....balls. We play him while he is the best option, and if there is somebody better, he gets dropped....like every other rugby player. That's the way Jean who is a warrior, would choose.
