hahahaha well old piet got a good smack down for that tackle. it still looked more legit than some of the ilegal tackles that was being allow by that ref

I was at that game when Piet Van Zyl got mad - not that I justify his actions. The bloody ref was useless - what insensed most people was a maul - where the ball was just in front of the last foot of the person in the maul - got picked up and a try was scored under the posts. There was no prior mistakes - no knock -on, but after the try was scored the crooked ref called them back for a scrum. The referee made so many mistakes that day such as knock-ons by the All Blacks and they got the scrum feed, etc.
After the game there was a collection held to pay Van Zyl's legal fees - or at least some chaps tried to do that - and virtally all fans wanted to contribute.
That ref was a replica of Bryce Lawrence and the same thing happened - after that game he had to get pshycological treatment and was dropped from the test referee panel. It ought to show refs not to be crooked.
By the way the Dick was also bad - his test refereeing skills improved after his intial disgrace - but never to the level that anybody could call him a decent referee.
