Before rugby was "invented" there was a game played by the Celtic races. One such game was Caid.
"The word Caid means 'scrotum of the bull'. The ball was usually made out of animal skins with a natural bladder inside."
How they came up with a game that means scrotum of the bull I don't know but it does let you know it wasn't a game intended for wimps , lol
