This from Cardinelli:

" The change at scrumhalf is as expected. Meyer may well have favoured the more experienced Francois Hougaard for this fixture rather than hand Cobus Reinach his first Test start. I said as much on Monday, even though I had witnessed Hougaard’s incompetence at the Aviva Stadium first hand. I felt that Hougaard and Reinach possessed similar strengths, and that in the end, experience should determine who starts.

But having watched Hougaard closely in training this week, I can see why he's not being backed for the Twickenham clash. Hougaard has continued to make handling errors in training, and generally appears to be lacking confidence. Starting Reinach, whose work rate and attitude at training has been top drawer, may be the best thing for the Boks."

I do not necessarily blame the greasy ball.  Hougaard was at times out f position to receive the ball.  Came out and went past him.   The qustion rather is - are we back to 2012 insofar as he is concerned?
Hougaard made some sloppy passes in the home test againstth Wallabies - but was forgiven because of the Springbok win.   He was better against the AB's - but fell back to a poor game last Saturday.
I was not happy with his kicking game in Perth when he came on - too many kicked balls served as a basis for counter-attacks.  he afterwards kicked much less.
So is he really dependable?

I'm with you Mike, the greasy ball has just become a running joke since Beeno blamed it for our loss.

I've never thought of Hougaard as a good scrumhalf. He made his name on the wing, where he was quite handy. He seems to get flustered under pressure or with a less than perfect platform to work behind, and the inaccurate passing is nothing new, it has long been an issue. Not what you want in a test scrummie.

It is not good for team confidence when the scrummie of all players is making so many mistakes. When he is poor at the rucks he is worth a 10 points gift to the opposition.
Reinach is a similar pla yer to Hougaard, but at least he is not clumsy at the base of the ruck. Neither are excellant passers or kickers and prefer to run the ball.

We've seen HouGat lose his confidence before and it took him ages to regain it. He seems to struggle in this department.

I do not think it's wise of Meyer to have selected him in the match 23.

Vermaak would have been a much better choice for bench duty.

Sadly HouGat has once again shown that test rugby's beyond him.

Nerves is a hell of thing to suffer from.

I've seen some very talented golfers fall apart in competition .. yet when playing casually their obvious talent warrants a professional career.

It's not just talent that makes a super sports star. Mental strength is vital to deal with the pressure sfound on the professional sports field.

I was a little worried about Lambie too ... that's till he banged over the match winning kick a few weeks back.

I would have Hougaard over du Preez anyday......du Preez offered stuff all on his return.....looked good off the bench in his first outing but provided nothing thereafter.

Hougaard was not good against Ireland, but he was hardly alone.........making a handful of errors in 62 passes is hardly a train smash.

A good coach would have shown faith in Hougaard given his games against Oz and NZ....same can be said of Pollard.......these selections confirm what a useless coach Meyer is. Players never get to settle, he shows so little faith.

Just look at what has happened to de Allende.....its pathetic......he just does not know how to treat players and wonders why they hardly produce the goods

Average - not good......take your pick..........the Boks as a whole were poor, not good, average......whatever......they lost to a depleted Irish side......pretty pathetic whichever way you look at it.

Yes Mozart, I will rather have Hougaard or Reinach over du Preez and Pienaar.
I would rather have Jan Serfontein at 12
I would rather have any of about 5 locks over Matfield.
The only older player I would still want is Habana and that is only because we are a little light on wings
Now you can fire away

Hougaard's mistakes were  highlighted in Boots & All tonight and it was clear he was flustered and very nervous>  It was pointed out that in a coupleof cases where he was receiving the  ball - he did not look at the ball - but at the op[position and that cayued problems in handling of the ball.
For some reson or other he lost confidence in his own abilities and the results were egative.   This is exactly what happened inthe Junetests of 2012 and it took him nearly two years to get it back.
It would be a disaster to play him on Saturday.   The opposition saw what happened and they would target him.   So with all his poor selections - Meyer had no option but to change the scrummie.
It is possible that he would play only from the bench  or not at all during the rmeainder of the tests this month, but that he would have the whole of Super 15 to get his mojo back.

We'll have to see how Meyer is going to deal with him, have any of you watched Kevin Luiters from the Kings?
He has a very accurate and quick clearance from the base of the ruck.

"He has a very accurate and quick clearance from the base of the ruck."

I have seen Sarel outsmarting Hougaard in quite a few games, but I think what prevents Sarel from selection is his porous defence.

I have not seen Luiters, but for now it seems Hougat will be selected for the RWC - unless Meyer gets a visit from the fairies and decides to go with FaF de Klerk .

My overall feeling is that the RWC is 1 year too early for us - still too many wide open gaps or question marks.

Sure BB and you probably wouldn't have played O Connell and McCaw either. There is no doubt we have a group of players reaching the end of their careers, but do we have credible replacements. So far I remain unconvinced about JJ, Step, de Allende, Goosen, Lambie, Hougaard, Reinach,  Malherbe, van der  Merwe, Lomp, Mohoje and as a fetcher Coetzee.
You may say these players haven't had enough chances, and that's fair for some if you exclude the S15,
So let's see if Lambie and Serfontein can do the business. If Step can finally do something to ring the cash register for us on Saturday....that's what centres are supposed to do.

That's exactly it ... do we have credible replacements?

I believe in most cases we do. The Gurthros, Jannies, Bakkies, Jean, and JP's are not only past their best but waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay past it.

Even the issue of a 5 lock can easily be sorted out if you have a mind to.

I'd hang onto De Allende, Serfontein and Lambie ... and then bring in guys like Kriel, Schalk vd Merwe, Du Toit, Dreyer, Willemse, Lappies, Faf, Marnitz, De Jongh, Van Wyk, Kolbe, Sithole, Esterhuisen, Akker, Jacques Du Plessis and work with these boys.

Younger stronger boys will always be better than experienced hasbeens.

Can any of our stats gurus compasre our handling mistakes with the greasy ball to those of ireland.
Hougaaard was not the only culprit dropping the greasy ball. Remeber oaks Se  xton note dthe greasy conditions.
Hougaard handling of the ball has been just fine up untill the Irish test test. It is not surprising at all that aguy wh plays in dry weather 99% of the time could take abit of time to get used to handling agreasy ball.
Hougaard was outstanding against the abs comprehensively outpaying Aaron Smith. Unshackled by the daft game paln he shone brightly.Years he doesnt always look at the ball at when at the base of the scrum a matter that can surley be rectified. Those trashiing Hougaard whilst also ignoring other handling lapses are making complete twoits of themselves again. Bwahahahhaahha
Moz posted stats to show how domiannt the Boks were. Naas and mallet said the Boks simply didnt take thier many chances. They lost the game rather than the Irish winning it. Skintad said the Boks ticked all the boxes aprt from the score line.We didnt score more simply because we handled the greay ball poorly and Jean didnt take the points on offer through goal kicks.I have no worries whatsoever re the Irish should we meet them in the RWC as we are very comfortably better than them and the Bok match 23 will be a lot stronger by then.
The abs who won against Engalnd B via a non try by the Crude have far more to be worried about as they were comprehensively out played in the first half (scoreboard flattered the abs) and for the final moments of the game leading Robson to state they had the wee abs on the ropes (who can doubt that when one considers the wee abs been slaughtered in the final scums of the game and England being handed a penalty try!!!! Hahhahahahahahaha).
When the poms put their best players on the park one has to conclude, on the evidence at hand, the wee abs have a poor chance of beating England next year.
Hands off Hougaard.

Doesn't matter Beandip.

We have better than him.

He's all a rattle and lacks consistency, doesn't have a kicking game and to be quite honest I think we can do with out his two bounce pass.

Time to move on from this chump.

The problem is you can't get handling error mistake stats, you just get turnovers conceded which includes possession lost in all aspects.

We had 19 and Ireland 8

I think HouGat would make an excellent basketball player. He already has the bounce pass down pat.

All he needs is platform shoes and he's good to go.

Rather Beano looking for excuses to keep Frans "two bounce pass" HouGat in the team.

It's not the first time we've seen HouGat bounce the ball from the base of the ruck to his 10.

The Bulls are well acquainted with this tactic of his.

I'm amazed he doesn't dribble the ball like a basketball player through the gap. At least that way he'll a cross the gain line and get us go forward.

A good scrummie needs a kicking game but some can get away without one. I have however never seen a good scrummie without a passing game. Have you?
