By the same source Dave used to sum up Matfield, in the same article ....why did you leave this bit out Dave? Were we not supposed to read this?

"This brings us to the continued selection of halfback Francois Hougaard. Has an international halfback for a major side ever played a poorer game than Hougaard against Ireland? Probably not. His passing was terrible. His option taking was invariably wrong. He made handling mistakes. His kicking was invariably ineffective. And he gave his forwards no running go-forward.

All of this is inevitable in his play. How a Springboks coach can pick someone who plays halfback rather like a chunky winger with no passing skills is beyond me.

It is obvious to anyone with any knowledge about rugby that when Hougaard is playing at halfback, the Springboks can’t have a fluent, attacking backline. The deterioration in the play of Handre Pollard is obvious. He is standing far too deep. He is kicking too much. And his running game, as a consequence, has fallen away"

You have to love this silly bugger...Pollard's game has "fallen away". In one test mind you, where on second viewing, I continue to believe Pollard had a perfectly solid game. He later goes on to call Willie le Roux....Hennie le Roux.

A mouth connected to a not so clever brain. .

Nope, the article was there for everyone to read.

I don't agree with the take on Hougaard at all - look no further than his tests against Oz and NZ

I do agree with the take on Matfield which has been the issue all year.

Hougaard along with at least 11 other Boks had average games against Ireland. That one game does not define Hougaard.

Matfield has been a physical liability all year

Nobody bar Dave would diasagreewih the article about Hougaard as well.   So I m not picking twhat i like about the article and what I don't like.   I a always lukewarm about Hiugaard - he went back to his alck of form of 2012 in the gae on Saturday.   There can be no doubt about that.

Francois is a very talented player but he is the wrong piece on the chessboard to win the contest. He must exclude in some games and brought in (as an impact) if the coach understood this and used correctly he would come to his best...but he is not a starting no 9...there are a lot of better potential scrumhalfs in SA...I believe...I would agree with Reinach but what about all the otherthe youngsters that are knocking at the door. we have scrumhalves but resistant coaches...whatever happened to Rory Kockett??

Rory Kockott made his debut for France last weekend.

Hougaard is our best 9 as he proved against the best in NZ and Oz only a few weeks ago

Far too many clowns have short memories

I am trying to understand how after Hougaard did very well during the RC and now had one poor match (aided by very poor protection from his forwards) and now he must be history?

Thanks BB that's my opinion too...we have so much depth...finally we got it together , so should I say...our number 10's are best in the world bar Danny who has not reached his end yet....we are talking about 9 and 10....definitely the key to winning...in every rugby match ..we might argue about lock forwards and tightheads and looseheads, looseforwards but 9 and 10 are and have been the key to winning games...rugby has and obviously will be combined effort but KEY has alwayds been 9 and 10 , it doesn't matter if you have mediocre other team mates as long as they gel and bind together...all action generally comes from the halves. I remember Keith Oxlee stressing this years ago at Collegians. He said we halves don't necessary win the game, we rely on good forwards to get us started, we pass the buck and the centres an  wings and some times the rest must finish the job.

Agree mate.

For me 8,9,10,12 and 15 are the players that "create" attacking plays.

In a sense Meyer has built some depth, or perhaps I should say we have depth for those positions, but it very much depends on horses for courses. If Hougaard struggles in wet weather it is something he needs to learn, but he as strengths that simply cannot be ignored.

He is a tremendous defender, he is strong with ball in hand, and he really doesn't have such a kak pass.

Yes he kicking is not great, but I actually prefer a halfback that is very sparing indeed when it comes to kicking.

Your absolutely spot on there mate...it does start in the engine room but tries are fulfllled with the skills of the halves... centres and wings can only fulfill their roles when the rest come to the party.. .rugby is actually not a complicated game.

Might be oversimplifying things, but the way  see rugby is simple.

If 1- 8 does their job at set phase  and breakdown, you allow you 8 to link with your 9 and 10, then 8,9,10, 12 and 15 should be your playmakers obviously in different ways 9, 10 and 15 will use the boot as part of their make up, 8 and 12 will hit the line, your 13 14 and 11 must be your finishers.

The roles do interchange a bit these days, but it boils down to setting it up by the forwards in gaining the momentum, then exploiting and creating space by the playmakers and finishing off by the flyers.

That's very well said, that's the variations that develope in the course of the game but the basic  skills have always vested in halves...every great side has always suceeded with the George Gregans', Joost Van Der Westhuizens', Jonny Wilkinsons', Dan Carters', Thierry La Croixs', Dimitri Yachvillis', Martin Hernandezs',  Keith Oxlees', Gareth Edwards,Hugo Portas' and a host of others.

and thankfully we are very blest with Patrick Lambie and Handre Pollard...only a huge pity we have not Rory Kockett (LOST IN fRANCE) to complete a devastating combo...I think Rory would and them would make the best 9 and 10 in the world...very sad!

Morne had one poor kick and he was history. The problem isn't that Hougaard had one poor game that was an exception. The problem is he had one good game that was an exception and then relapsed to the scrummie we know. And what you liked about him in that game was the stuff he used to do on the wing.

One poor kick, you don't seriously believe that, do?

He has been poor since 2010, and got worse every year there after. His one strength in 2012 cost us a coupe of games in the RC.

He should have been put to pasture 2 years ago.

Mozzie, Morne is a nightmare to SA rugby at this stage...one thing is sure you'll never win a WC with Morne...he lacks polish and panache and finishing skills...never a bad player and a good honest fill-in servant of SA rugby but not a world winner that's for sure...even HM has seen the penny drop...dear ol'Morne does not come close to Patrick and Handre.

Morne had a history of poor kicks - as I pointed out repeatedly to you.  Lets look at this year alone to see how many bugger-ups there were in fact were.   Lets forget about lats year where he had inlsuive of the RC had a series of penalty kciks where he faile to find touch - 7 of those in nine tests.
This year alone -
*   he failed to find touch withj the penalty kick in Perth':
 *  had a chargedown kick near the tryline in the Pretoria test - which bar excellent action by DEe Alllende - would have been a try and potential equalizerfor Argentina;
*   I  Salta with two minutyes to go - kicked a ball from the  Springbok half oof the fied directly into tough - putting the Springbosk under severe pressure for the enxt three minutes - a penaty or droopped goal would have resulted in a Springbok loss;and
*    He made an absolute farce of his defnese in the Perth test missing virtually half of his attempted tackles.
That would not have been seen by yoou beause Morne is a favourite of yours and your favourites never makes bugger-ups.
By keeeping Morne - Meyer wouldjust havetndered for further disasters to happen.

Morne is just a whipping boy for the mindless. Fly halves have to control games, Morne was very good at that....not a flashy player, but a very good decision maker.
Don't get me wrong, I prefer Pollard now...and I think Fran's could have been the answer up north. But if those players weren't available I'd play Morne with no qualms.

Mozz, old mate, will you give Patrick a special column if he saves the Boks this weekend...this selection I actually agree with Heyneke...start Lambie...finish impact player Pollard...Morne was never in this class and kept us mediorce all the time...toss of the coin stuff...entering a combat was always a gamble...now we have game breakers and match winners...when Morne played he had a negative effect amongst his team mates...there's absolutely no doubt about that.

Mozart is the joke of the year.   Mone was not a good decisionmaker ever - matter of fatc he was the most predictable flyhalf imaginable.   The only difference is he still thinks decisionmaking relates to kicking at goal by flyhalfs.   If you ever want to see a flop at flyhalf - or center - try Fransie.
Mozart is a laugh a minute - a clueless member of this site - who is like a broken graamophone needle stuck in a groove.

"Hougaard is our best 9 as he proved against the best in NZ and Oz only a few weeks ago" I would hardly call the Stadium TV Director aided win at Ellis park "proving" oneself against the best. I believe there will be more unpleasant surprises at Twickenham. Maybe you will be at the recieving end of the Stadium TV Director there - that would be ironic.
