Worcester and Springbok scrumhalf Francois Hougaard seems to have born the brunt of the unhappiness at the Springboks’ recent tour to Australia and New Zealand, with coach Allister Coetzee confirming he wasn’t happy with his play.

Hougaard was the only player from the tour left out of the squad who will undertake the last two games in the Castle Lager Rugby Championship in South Africa and has been seen by some to be a scapegoat for the Boks 57-0 loss to New Zealand.

Surprisingly a player such as Raymond Rhule – who missed nine tackles against New Zealand – has been kept in the squad, while Hougaard, who was until then the only overseas based player in Coetzee’s squad, has been dispatched back to his English club.

Coetzee confirmed he was not happy with Hougaard’s technical ability and blamed it on the fact he has been moved between wing and halfback throughout his professional career.

“Look I am not going to go and explain every individual player and why he has been left out. The reason for Francois Hougaard obviously – he is a fantastic rugby player and it is just that that continuity hasn’t been part of this - like not playing regularly at nine has not helped him with his technical ability at scrumhalf at test match level,” Coetzee said.

“Unfortunately that is the case and it hasn’t gone well, because I think it is important that our nines function really well. And I just think technically at that level it has been a struggle for him really.”

While it is unusual to see a coach directly criticise a player like this, Coetzee followed it up with his explanation that the scrumhalf needs to do the basics well. With Ross Cronje overcoming a viral illness that saw him miss the last two tests, Coetzee said the basics, as well as combinations were a key in the way he looked at his No 9s.

“Its not just with Ross there, but also the combination, which was another criteria I had with the selection this year. In combination with Elton, it helps a lot. There is synergy and they understand each other very well. Ross does the basics very well, a player like (Rudy) Paige does the basics very well. Louis Schreuder has good basics. One has to look at that, and it is important for the way we want to play - for any ball in hand game – to make sure the backs and Elton get set and have a bit of space and time on the ball.

“Louis Schreuder is basically a player who has shown that form as well for the Kings and the Sharks and I think he is instrumental in the Sharks’ upward curve, their performance this year, he has played really well. And if you look at the future, going forward he is now 27, he has matured but he has age on his side. This compared to Jano (Vermaak) who was part of our tour to Argentina – great scrumhalf, still part of the plans but we have to have a long term plan as well.

Coetzee added winger S’busiso Nkosi as an example of bringing in a young player for the future, and while he didn’t say it, the Boks are looking at the Sharks winger for a start possibly in the end of year tour.

“Therefore a guy like S’busiso Nkosi is also in the mix, we need to focus on long term planning. He is an outstanding player on form. It is difficult for me to say – yes on the one hand overseas players, I need to look at local players. And then for a particular player, I say no, he can be overseas and I can pick him despite the form the other players are showing here. It doesn’t work like that, so I have to be consistent and fair. S’busiso is a player for the future, he shows that confidence when he plays for the Sharks, and that is how I selected the beginning of the year, the players who were confident playing for their franchises, and they do have that confidence coming to the national side. They do have that confidence to make good decisions on the field.”

After the 57-0 loss to New Zealand, the Boks will need to bounce back strongly in these two home tests.

Anything else and Coetzee’s unhappiness with Hougaard will be of little consequence in the greater scheme of things.

Hougaard has never been a favorite of mine but I'd love to hear what he thinks of Coetzee. I think it's a bit off of the national coach to belittle one of his players through the media.

Cowardly of Coetzee, has he taken any blame for the NZ result? Seems to be blaming everyone before himself

Prior to the game he was singing the lad's praises. That seals it, Coetzee is a Doos...end of.

Well many of us have been saying this for years...but Coetzee's back stab is despicable.

This probably describes what is meant by "being between the devil and the deep blue sea". You have a passionate dislike in Hougaardt and you have a passionate dislike in Coetzee. Now Coetzee has not only dropped Hougaardt, he is also rubbishing him in the media.

Haaaaaaahahahahaaa!! Yeah, yeah ... there's a line drawn in the sand that you never cross. Not if you want to be respected. He did. He dissed the one and supported the other ... the other being Rhule.

Would Hansen have said something like that ... or how about Eddie Jones?

I don't like HouGat as a rugby player. I don't like Coetzee as a person. HouGat I'd have over for a braai anyday. Coetzee I'd have over so that I can get him into a headlock and beat him senseless. There's a difference.

Needle d1c5 tosser!  Hougaard is a kaaaaak 9 and AC sorta acknowledges this but still picked him in the sqyad AND selected him to start  over Paige.
Doos doesnt even realise he's dropped Paige in it with those comments.
Also the whole Pollard/Combrink playing time thing.......BOLLOCKS!!!

@CC. I hear you. I was actually just having a dig at you. My dislike for Hougaardt is just a little less than yours. There were at least times when he was brilliant and after leaving for Worcester he did become one of their key players. I guess they are chuffed to hear of AC's sudden dislike in him. LOL. AC, on the other hand, I never liked him and I would never trust him. He just gives the impression that he cannot be trusted, which is why I have always called him Suutjiespoep. He does not come across as highly intelligent either. I can remember once when he compared the Stormers' uphill battle lying ahead to Polly's Shorts for the Comrades runners of that particular year. Only problem was that in that particular year they were running from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

To beat him senseless would imply that he had any sense in the first place, CC ....

Haaahahahahaaaa!! That's true, Deddy.

A Labotomy would be an improvement.

Lobotomy performed on AC. Really? Read this description of the procedure carefully. Especially the last part " It consists of cutting or scraping away most of the connections to and from the prefrontal cortex, the anterior part of the frontal lobes of the brain."

Hougaard is a total liability. His passing seems worse now than what it was, and it was bad before.
It baffles the mind that Coetzee has only now established what most people have seen in the past.
An expert coach would have recognized this technical weakness in 2014 especially.
Hougaard lacks the basic scrumhalf skills of passing and kicking. He is a quality player- in the wrong position.
His best games at 9 have been in fast open games when the Boks forwards are dominating with quick ball at the ruck. He is a small wing playing at 9.
His game against the Irish in 2014 EOT was diabolical, then he was a substitute against the Welsh- and pretty much ensured the Welsh won.
When the ruck is a mess, Hougaard is a basket case

I cannot fathom how he can turn a really gifted player into a robot and expect him to perform.
Firstly, the all blacks were great at disrupting the boks on their own ball. We seem to stick to pods to smash it up with our forwards, but this has become predictable. All the all blacks did is to tack out the support runner, which is legal due to the fact that the supported is already bound to the ball carrier. That meant that the all blacks can get in over the ball. That is Alistair coaching of the breakdown and winning your ball back.
Then you have Jantjies that is the worst communicator on the field and no other player knows what is going on. The only players that can play with Janjties is Cronje and Faf as they have been able to read him and know what he is trying to do.
Also look at Hougaards performance a couple of years ago, he actually played at 9 when the boks beat the All Blacks for the last time.
How can a player like that go backwards. Coetzee has a knack of robbing players of their skills.
I don't like to see the boks loose, but while we are on a downhill, I hope that we do get clapped by Australia and NZ over the next couple of weeks to expose him once and for all so that we can see the back of him.
Bring back Jake White to sort this mess up and get us back to producing decent quality players.
