We Fart around who is the best from 1 to 15 but are missing the point.   I do not have any claim to fame in rugby. I am a simple man that enjoys my rugby. Rugby naturally played a part of my life but I was not endowed by the Creator to be a superstar , perhaps not even a good player but very average. I had short legs and although slightly built was as tough as nails. Not a prospect for higher things. I went to rugby school in KZN that were champions for 10 years…undefeated for 10 years against any Natal Schools, lost 2 games only, one to an Eastern Province school and one Rhodesian (Zimbabwe). Our first team nailed schools all over including Rondebosch,SACs, Bishops all the Northern Transvaal and TransvaalSchools…we made mincemeat of EP Schools bar one. We produced a fair amount of players some of which are legends, Phillip Nel the 1937 Springbok Captain that clean sweeped the AB’s in their tour , an accolade that has never been repeated. We supplied SA with 2 World Cup winning flyhalfs, Joel and Butch and nearly a possible one Peter Grant. Probably the best flyhalf ever (not my words but John Gainsford) was Keith Oxlee. He should know as he was probably along with Danie Gerber the best centres that have ever worn the green and gold. Looking back, I have often asked this question…a question that is often scorned and falls on deaf ears…why do some sides achieve. Old Springboks, Grey Bloem, MaritzburgCollege (not anymore since the Skonk Nicholson influence…Dave Dell inherited it) Crusaders…constantly Staatmaakers…do never right them off. AB’s well enough said.   Why do great sides succeed (England Clive Woodward, SA Kitch Christie, Jake White, New Zealand ,Brian Lochore, Graham Henry and OZ , Bob Dwywer and Rod Mc Queen. Why do great sides fail…ask this question…it starts with the coach but obviously there are many more factors.

Only Aristocrat can answer this very valid question for you!

Seb yes there are obviously a series of things that make for a great side and I think its clear a coach is vital. He has a great say in who is selected , the strategy, how motivated and tight the group are etc etc.

Is Meyer a great coach. did pretty well in his first season and would have won the 4 nations but for Morne's going off re his goal kicking. He is a builder of note so one expects the graph to head north over his tenure but for injuries that can sink anyone.. Delicacy prevents me mentioning another factor.

Intelligence is the vital ingredient missing from SA rugby. Why are our top cases not coaching SA sides? At bottom factors other than merit prevail far too often.

Yes we miss the Card very much!!

Seb

Where did you get your avatar - when I saw it I started laughing and am still grinning about it.

Yes I think great coaches make great teams.   However, there is another element entirely missing in present coaches - and that is backline play.   I can remember how we got hammered about passing games and running games when I used to play.  Nowadays backline play is grossly neglected.  SARU a few months ago appointed specialists to help in getting players improved.   All forwards and kicking advisors - not a single expert in backline play.   I call it bullshit in capital letters.   Maybe SARU needs your avatar.

Der Aristokrat is a really good member - he mostly was sensible - but drove me nuts one day by saying thst Morne Steyn is the best ball sense player in SA.  The argument turned into discussion as to what ball sense means and nobody would give an inch.   Hell - the guy should get back.

Mike...the only thing the Poms are good at is humour...in this department they score hands down...lol.

They are so full of shit that certain procedures to their bowel problem need to be applied, especially in when it comes to both the oval, round ball and smaller red and white hard ball.

Whether they can laugh at themselves is another matter...they are really good with direct, apt wit especially when it's aimed at others and Saffex since moving from the Eastern Cape where people are friendly, genuine, rather unsophisticated and nice especially the farming people...England must seem like another planet...it's turned Saffex into a Snapster as Beeno calls him.

However if he lives in Suffolk...the people there are rather likeable if you can understand their dialect.

Take for example...

BLOWING A HOOLY! In the Suffolk dialect: Oi got owtta bid......'n' wandered arow'nd, 'n' scraatched moy owd hid......at 'at funny owd sow'nd, Oi looked owtsoy'd......'at wuz bloow'n a hooly, But th' sow'nd 'at Oi hud......wuz cumm'n fr'm ahoind me, Oi got baack interbid... with a shayke a me hid, Cord blaast!......'at wuz shayk'n th' bid. Well Oi coota hell!......'at staart'd t' smell, Oi looked at th' woife......she wuz sleep'n 'n' dream'n, Oi laarf ser much......moy oyze wuz stream'n, Coz 'at grit owd swo'nd......'n' 'at stinkin owd smell , ......Wuz a blast fr'm her owd aarse....... ......Wot wuz cawz'n th' farce!   Translated means:   I woke up in the middle of the night, to such a sound it gave me a fright, I got out of bed and wandered around, and scratched my head at that funny old sound, I looked outside it was blowing a hooley. But the sound that I heard was coming from behind me, I got back in bed with a shake of my head, cord blast it was shaking the bed. Well I'd go to hell, it started to smell, I looked at the wife, she was sleeping and dreaming, I laughed so much my eyes was streaming, cause that great old sound and that stinking smell, was a blast from her old arse was what was causing this farce. Before I studied language, I thought my speech to be inferior. But once I looked into the subject of the Suffolk dialogue and spoke to family and friends, it became clear to me that the Suffolk dialect was in fact unique and something to be proud of.
