How now Gerhard van den Heever

Two years ago this lad scored a try in the S15 labelled the best of the season Watch it on this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYSuETQFpWY. But two years have passed and he seems to have gone backwards, if anything.

He is an ideal wing physically 1.9 metres, tall enough to defend the high ball. And he weighs a muscular 94 kgs. There is no doubt he has lots of gas....a better step than almost any other SA wing.....and a unique eye for his path to the line.

His problem seems to be the occasional blunder and some uncomitted tackling. This guy ought to be able to bring off a thunderous tackle .....how can tackling be a problem?

To me this is just another highly talented  South African youngster, who is not receiving professional coaching.

I have to agree. Far too often we are seeing talented senior players with amateur flaws that are never rectified at any stage of their career. Take Spies for example. I would seriously have had him doing full-on tackling drills to rectify every aspect of his technique. I'm not a professional coach, so why are those that are not identifying and working on these kinds of issues? It's a scarey thought.

To me its a lot to do with attitude. A wing can loaf if he wants to. Gerhard has all the talent in the world but needs to look for work and get busy and get physical.

Spiesies should have stayed a wing. Has he ever been the same since his illness is another question?

 Agreed, bit of a mystery with what has happened to this guy - looked the real deal a season or so ago. He is 101kg's these days

Playing for the Stompies wont help his case! Not a good place for backs to build their career.

I have said this for some time now. The last good game that Van den Heever had was Super 14 semi-final in 2010 and the few minutes before he left the field with a hammy in the final. Since that, he has never been the same again.
