Australia 12 South Africa 38: Brisbane, 2013 This was one of the highest points of the undervalued, in retrospect, time in charge of the national side by Heyneke Meyer. His Bok side that day combined the necessary physicality, commitment and levels of silky skills - Willie le Roux wickedly to the fore - to earn a fabulous, full-house triumph in the Rugby Championship with four tries to nil. In doing so, they snapped an eight-game streak of successive Test losses in Brisbane, for their first triumph there since winning at the old Exhibition Ground back in 1971. Not even the setback of losing Willem “Bone Collector” Alberts to a yellow card as early as the eighth minute could distract the Jean de Villiers-led Boks from their vibrant task (later the mounting Wallaby frustration got to their ace ball-poacher Michael Hooper, also binned in the second half). The match also underlined the great all-round value to the Bok cause of powerhouse No 8 Duane Vermeulen – a costly absentee from the 2018 Championship thus far. ......... Yep all the Mapoes are coming home to roost. How -Wing, often a mope has moments or rare insight.

Meyers Boks were good in 2013, and 2014 - but slowly started to unravel in 2015.

They did well to push the All Blacks in the semi-final, but the All Blacks did not play to their full potential regardless of the Boks performance.

The 2014 EOYT was the beginning of the end- where Meyer was caught between 2 game plans.

The 2012 game plan of kick and chase, and the expansive game plan of 2013- 2014.

Then the loss to Argentina at home in 2015....,

Meyer became more conservative with the overuse of Schalk at 10, and also instructed Schalk and others to go to ground instead of offloading.

Then followed the loss to Japan in the world cup- and the game plan became the Bulls in the 1970's.

Like Jake White, he is obviously a good coach - and a pity that both are not coaching in SA.  Their only weaknesses are playing the right mix of 15 man rugby and 10 man rugby to put teams away early. Sometimes they overdo the 10 man approach- when it being more expansive would destroy the opposition when the forwards are in control.

The EOYT in 2014 saw the Bok's running game in the Rugby Championship be exposed. They were too thin at the breakdown. Meyer made a panic selection when dumping Hougaard and Pollard for Reinach and Lambie; was rewarded with a truly awful display by both. The worst half back play I've seen was against England and Italy. Absolutely inept. Meyer heeded the fans and was punished for it. The loss of Alberts was another obstacle. Mohoje held up in the wins over Australia and New Zealand, but we had nothing going up north.

In 2015, Meyer indulged the fans again with Damian, Lood, Lambie et al. The rest is history.

Meyer was actually very versatile tactically. When Clever Mike criticises his game plan I laugh. Which one? He found interesting ways to utilise players. He didn't merely select a player and expect miracles, he put them in positions to succeed. Damian actually got better under Meyer in 2015, inspite of his limitations.

Coetzee and Rassie aren't capable of extracting what little any of players have to give. I'll give Rassie the next two tests to set a benchmark, but I doubt h e is going to take such a dramatic step up.

We chased away our best coaches. When will SA ever learn.

CB

I agree with you about Meyer as coach.  The Springboks started to unravel against the Wallabies in 2014 and even though they rallied against the AB's that year - the collapse really started in November 2014.

I differ from you on the issue of two game plans of Meyer - he never had a consistent game plan and the main problem was not any (mythical) game plan - the real problem was the team selection got worse and worse because thee aging players he preferred started losing their ability to be competitive faster and faster.  The Japan test was lost despite in Meyer's own words he "selected the most experienced team to ever play for the Springboks".

There were one very real problem with Meyer as coach,   He himself summarized it - SA does not have players with ball skills to play a ball in hand game".   That leaves his coaching of backline players in jeopardy.

In summary - he was a good forwards coach , but extremely limited as a backline coach,   In the world cup he used exclusively the game plan he used in 2004 as the Bulls coach - ie to make loosies or other forwards the first receiver of balls coming out of tight play and thus destroying the backline comprehensively.

HM's peak was the NZ win in 2014. As Augie says he rode the popular wave of that win and made some poor choices, the YE tour, leading all the way to the WC. He only really corrected after the shock of the Japanese loss....ditching Lambie, Pienaar, Kirchner, Oosthuizen and Stephanie. He should also have dumped Lood, Kriel and Allende who really cost us against NZ. Not quite tough enough, a little too keen to be popular .....but probably a better bet than Erasmus Head.

So what about dumping Jannie and Matfield as well.   What is very real is that you lied about De Allende before - so wat can one make out about that slur.  O no - I forget you are the best player analyzer in the world discovering things which no other analyzer ever saw.   So ke ep up world class BSter.

His biggest falure was to not give the "next in lines" more game time. He played Jean and Victor into the ground. Even started them in nothing matches. He could have managed his player pool a lot better, but he went all in on a few old players of which a few did not live up to expectations or did not make it to the WC.

So the fans are now blamed for the teams selection of Meyer.   That is the weirdest theory ever - but on par with your excuses for deficient co aching and playing by players you support.

The fact is that some of Meyer's favourites and geriatrics were injured  others were totally incapable of playing anymore - so how the hell did the fans decided on selection.   Please - your above-mentioned statement is the type of nonsense that makes you look sillier than ever.

This guy's main feat: he understood that SA failed to take the turn of professionalism, that the more rugbys would move forward into the professional era, the more the shortcomings of SA rugby would be exposed.

Therefore, he took to milking as much as possible the remnants from the amateur era. It was short sighted, selfish, typical of SA rugby passion for instant gratification.

It makes things worse. Which guaranteed the termination of rugby in SA.

Meyer had the Boks very well organised. There was always a clear plan. He was the kind of coach that devised a strategy for each opponent. There were base elements to the Bok blueprint that he would build on. Clever Mike, in straining to attack Meyer, has stated that Meyer sent his troops to battle having to improvise.

"Meyer indulged the fans"

Who was indulging the fans? Meyer. Reading comprehension is very important Clever Mike. I know ow you want to lie again, but stop straining to slander a person. Nowhere did I say the fans are the reason for the Bok selections. I have always clearly stated Meyer heeded their howls. This was the truth.

It was all just a matter of time before Meyer fell apart and exposed himself as a fool.

Jake White put a wonderful squad together and Meyer tried to cash in on it, only it never dawned on the idiot that aged players cannot maintain the same standard of play as when they were young.

Talk about being deluded.

In came the elderly and out went the arrogant prick, claiming all the while to have hung on to his "integrity".

We have a handful of deluded Meyer fans still running around, conjuring excuses for the failed fool. It's a fight they can never win, as Mozart and Poepol can attest to. It's years down the line and they're still trying their best to convince us.

Haaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahaha!!!

Oh and boys ... Dragon who had you both duped, already has the "it's the fans fault" excuse on the list.

You are too stupid a person to even make statements on team selection and the English statements made on the team changes by Meyer being caused by the howls of the fans are exactly the same as saying the fans caused the team selection changes by Meyer.  Repeating the same BS by different word usage is utter BS.

Let me ask you a question - was Meyer's character so weak that he listened to crowd demands = as you said clearly under this thread?

The way I see it Meyer was/is a decent coach that did not adequately bring in the new talent as quickly as he should have. This unfortunately led to a situation where he had a few player that were some way past their best and while their replacements did not have enough experience to adequately replace them. I think he did bow to public pressure and include players that he should not have included, and he did not give some other players a long enough run to prove themselves. That said, these are the mistakes that most coaches make, I don't think they make him a bad coach, and if he could have gone back and done it all again he would have done it differently.
In the end, towards the end of his tenure he had no choice but to rely on the old guard and the game plan he and they were most familiar with. It was not perfect, but under the circumstances, it was the best option.

Well Mike ... we saw how the players (Matfield & Du Preez) dictated terms to Snorre ... and we also know of how Jake had to take Matfield over his knee when he crossed the line. He returned home pouting like a little child.

Matfield is well known in the Pretoria area for being a total arsehole, as is the arrogant Fourie Du Preez.

Matfield is also known as a man who divides groups / teams ... and it's probably why he was sacked by the Lions last year.

We have already heard from Poepol's own mouth that Meyer was a coward by nature. Weak and easily manipulated. Spineless.

Do you remember how Meyer's instructions were ignored at the World Cup and how Matfield was behind it all? Meyer didn't even have the balls to discipline him for his divisive and treacherous behaviour ... and here we have two clown, Moffie and Poepol, singing his praises ... making up excuses for their failed coach.

They just won't accept that he had all the makings of a weak, spineless coach who was destined to fail at a higher level.

... but hey ... at least he hung onto his "integrity"!!

Cracks me up!!

Meyer brought it new players from the very beginning. He did in fact cap quite a few players. Only Duane, Eben, Pollard and Willie took the step up. We can't accuse him of failing to give New players exposure, and we can't say he didn't do it from his very first test. We also can't say he brought in older players first. It was the youth in the team that was exposed very early on. We couldn't even secure restarts or win lineouts, our scrum was bleeding penalties and our pack was not creating any platform to work from.

I've asked Clever Mike in the past to list players who were unfairly cast aside and who should have been promoted. He can't do it. It's very easy to say Meyer should have selected x, y and, z, another thing entirely to name them.

Yes he did, Poepol. He gave a lot of caps away ... to poor players that should never have been made Boks.

The quality players available were left playing Currie Cup. Anyone who showed a bit of form in the Super Rugby comp were ignored. Some even left to further their careers overseas. Some where told they were too small and would never amount to anything at test level.

He just got too many things wrong. One could forgive a mistake or three but he simply made too many stuff ups to be considered anything other than a very poor coach.

His biggest issue was his fondness of daydreaming about the Bulls glory days. Had he accepted that time had moved on and that he needed to look at the younger players, who knows?

Sadly it never happened and we are where we are today because of it. .

Meyer never selected a Bull laden team. From his very first test he had a Shark dominated team. Who were these players Meyer should have invested in?

HM got us as far we were going to go....within 2 points of beating NZ in the WC. Since then, choosing the newbies, playing the 'expansive' game we have plunged to 7, maybe lower. What more proof do we need.

Meyer is being made a saint by you,    The team he coached won just one test against the AB's in four years.    He lost a string of tests ending up with a loss against Japan

I have quoted word for word statements made by Meyer while he coached the Springboks and all those statements indicate serious deficiencies in his coaching.  Under Meyer we plunged to 6 after the Japan test - so your plunging statement is a farce.

Meyer's real problem was his team selection of the elderly - most being past their sell-by date.   The result of that was a huge gap in player experience and succession selecting of players,  That was the major inheritance of Meyer we ended up with.

Just one question  - in which tests in 2016 and 2017 did the Springboks play an expansive game?   That is entire BS again.   The argument always was about playing a ball-in-hand game - which Meyer was against and Coetzee was even more so.

Go through your teams elections of Meyer in 2012 and you will find 14 Bulls players in either the starting line-ups or on the bench that year,   He himself said at the end of 2012that he made a mistake in selecting players he was acquainted with.   That was assumed to refer to the14 Bulls players mentioned,
