Attack:
Hurricanes: Highlanders:
Trys = 1. Trys: 0
Metres = 528. Metres = 262
Carries = 161. Carries = 101
Defenders Beaten = 24. DB= 20
Clean Breaks = 13. CB= 2
Passes = 159. Passes = 94
Offloads = 10. Offloads = 4
Turnovers Conceded = 16 TC = 13
Hurricanes dominated all stats on attack,
other then conceding the most turnovers,
which is ultimatley why they lost. These are
typical stats from canes, made all the
oppurtunities on attack, and stats say
Canes should of scored more then 16. But
due to the Landers great defense, Canes
inability to be proficient, and change their
gameplan and stick to their structures like
they have been doing so well, ultimatley
lead to a Canes side who just fell short, they
also left 16 possible points on the feild, two
missed kicks from Taylor, and try
disallowed to Dixon. Both teams also,
conceded way too many turnovers with
Canes conceding 16 and Landers 13. You
cannot expect to build momentum and
phases, without regular possession. Canes
inability to adapt to the conditions, and
change their gameplan too. Just shows how
competitive the NZ Conf is, with those stats
againgst weaker defensive sides like some
SA and Oz sides they would of wan.
Defense:
Hurricanes: Highlanders:
Tackles Made = 112 TM = 164
Tackles Missed = 20 TM = 24
Turnovers Wan = 8 TW = 6
Stats say it all Landers had to make alot
more tackles then Canes, as they were
basically defending in their own half most of
the game. Canes wan more turnovers, both
teams missed way too many tackles, Canes
missed 20. Although Canes conceded no
trys, which is good they also conceded 6
Turnovers, at crucial times. Defense wan the
game.
Kicks:
Hurricanes: Highlanders:
Kicks = 26 Kicks = 27
Con = 1/1 (100%) Con = 0/0 (100%)
Pen = 3/5 (60%) Pen = 5/5 (100%)
D/G = 0/0 (0%) D/G = 1/1 (100%)
Landers had a far supeior kicking game, in
the first half Canes did, with Barratts very
accurate kicking game, his up and unders
were deadly. Momentum was going Canes
way, but once Barratt was taken off, Canes lacked direction, particularly in their kicking
game. Landers goal kickers were far
supeior, Parker converting all penalties into
points. Where as once Barratt went off,
Taylor missed two crucial kicks at goal
Breakdown:
Hurricanes: Highlanders:
Rucks Wan = 101 Rucks Wan = 72
Rucks Lost = 3 Rucks Lost = 5
Rucks Wan = 97.4 % RW= 93.5%
Mauls Wan = 4 MW= 1
Stats show Canes dominated the
breakdown battle, winning more rucks and more mauls then Landers. Which has been
a continuation of the Canes supeirority at
part of the game. With all their domination
at the breakdown, they diddnt convert it into enough points.
. Set Piece:
Hurricanes: Highlanders:
Lineouts Wan = 8 LW= 13
Lineouts Lost = 5 LL = 2
Lineouts Wan = 61.5% LW = 86.7%
Scrums Wan = 1 Scrums Wan= 9
Scrums Lost = 1 Scrums Lost = 0
Scrums = 50.0% Scrums = 100%
Another problem for the Canes was the set peices. Landers dominated the lineouts and scrums. Not good enough, Matu hd a pretty good game, but really struggled throwing in the lineouts, a few not straight. Canes also only wan one scrum and lost one, on contrast Landers wan all 9 scrums. Toomaga-Allen particularly struggled at scrum time. If they want to be title contenders or even playoff contenders, they need to sort out their set pieces.
Disciplin:
Hurricanes: Highlanders:
Penalties Conc= 10. Penalties Conc= 9
Red= 0. Red=0
Yellow=0. Yellow=0
Both teams disciplin were pretty bad, but Canes conceded more penalties. Too many penalties conceded, highlighted by 15 of the Landers coming from the penalties concedes by the Canes, Dixon particularly infringement at the base of the ruck cost Canes dearly
Canes really need to improove if they want to beat Chiefs let alone be in the playoffs, they may have let all the hype get to them. Need to focus on the basics, structures and core roles like they have done previousley, and the trys well come. And with Landers back in playoff contention, but they also missed a ton of tackles, and conceded alot of penalties. Their defense was exceptional and really wan them game, but they need to be more creative on attack, they put no trys againgst the canes. With Saders next it doesent get any easier.
