Leadership does count in close games, and I have never seen Spies exhibit any tactical nous which suggests he could influence things. To me he plays like a robot....with no variation, no initiative, no vision. So how is he supposed to bring these qualities to his team?
I have never seen Spies even engage in what looked like a tactical discussion....he mostly hangs by himself. This really seems like a strange choice.....and with the loss of Victor and F du Preez these Bools will need a leader.
I have to agree with you. Spies is very much a strange choice. Like Du Preez I think Spies will not cope so well with the captaincy anyway. The loss of Victor is huge for them and with the departure of Gary and Du Preez; what leadership is there? I suppose I would have opted for Chiliboy. Particularly as he has been the ext best hooker aside from Smit since last years Super XV. We'll just have to wait and see how Spies fronts up and how long it lasts.
Shove ou spiesies on the wing and have done! Let him terrorise the opposition backs. debulk a little and work on his speed and we would be in business Bokwise. No Spies certainly doesn't project like a leader.
A big plus for the bulle is that wee matfield is weg! Huge boost for the bulle tight five. We will also not need to be told endlessly that a lost game that it was tough, there is plenty to work on and we will be back. Talk about stringing the platitudes together!!! Oh yes and one had to love that serious and very intelligent look. I am surprised the show pony didn't don a pair of heavy rimmed spectacles to complete the picture.!!!!!

Am a big fan of Spies as a player, but he does not strike me as a leader - he walks my side as our 8, but not as the captain. Not sure who the captain should be as Schalk is not an automatic choice. I like Josh Strauss as a leader and he may just be a better all round option to Schalk at 7, but we will know the answer to that by end of the S15.
Of all the SA leaders, Strauss is my favourite and he is a fantastic player
I'm not at all sold on the idea of Strauss as a Bok. As a leader of the Boks? Definitely not into it at all.
der Ar I am struggling to see what you do not rate about the guy. He certainly was one of the standout SA loosies last year. Big, strong and huge workrate - the guy is all over the park
Chilliboy is the obvious choice to lead, Spies is a nothing player, I've given up on him a long time ago after promising so much early in his career.
Spies provides so much less than Samo or Reid.....we need somebody who wants to compete. This guy has done nothing since the Lions series.
Schalk Burger has not quite managed to lead the Stormers or WP to anything other than that green monstrocity of a consellation prise.
