It seemed like we were getting far fewer resets. But there was still plenty of opportunity for the stronger scrum to dominate....perhaps more so because you don't start with the paralysing effect of the hit. The new rule combined with throwing the ball in straight was a blast from the past. Can "foot up".....something from our distant past.... be far behind?

Joking aside, the new setup places far more emphasis on hooking and a player like Moore seemed to struggle. Or perhaps the pressure made it hard for him to do his work, something that was also part of rugby in the old days.

Two props who were surprisingly poor yesterday, were Steenkamp and Franks. Steenkamp hinged like there was no tomorrow....perhaps the forward movement of the hit has been helping with that problem, but whatever the reason, he looked totally at fault in almost every scrum. Franks, likewise got a rare penalty and was subbed at 60 minutes. This guy was probably the second best TH after Castro with the hit in place....seems he may not be as purely powerful.

On the evidence it seems there are winners and losers with the new scrum, and not necessarily the guys we might have thought. It puts more emphasis on pure power....I can't wait to see Castrogiovanni in this set up.
