I was thinking of the potential Mozart hysteria on Du Toit - but nevertheless there are thinking members on the site as well so here goes:-

"At the start of the 2018 Super Rugby season, Stormers forwards coach Russell Winter made his position on Pieter-Steph du Toit clear.   Winter believed that the 25-year-old, despite having been used at No 7 by Springbok coach Allister Coetzee's last year, was a lock.

"I see him as a lock who can cover loose forward ... predominantly, he will play lock," Winter explained during this year’s Australasian tour that yielded three straight losses for the Stormers.

On Saturday against the Blues, though, Du Toit played at No 7 and was immense for the Stormers as they powered their way to a 37-20 win at Newlands.   The former Sharks carried the ball eight times in the contest, beating four defenders along the way, while he also made nine tackles.

Perhaps most significantly, Du Toit won five lineouts as the Stormers got over the demons that had plagued them in that department in Australia and New Zealand.

With Chris van Zyl and Jan de Klerk putting in solid shifts in the second row and with Eben Etzebeth on the road to recovery, the possibility of Du Toit starting more matches on the side of the scrum is a very real one.

"What’s great is that he's obviously a big ball carrier, but he’s also a great lineout option," Van Zyl said of Du Toit from the Stormers' Bellville training complex on Monday.

"It gives us really good jumpers in all three positions. I think strength at lineout time is a massive plus.

"This weekend there was a real work ethic to the pack and I think that was credit to the fact that we had three locks on the field. I think that played towards our strength."

The improvement at lineout time, Van Zyl added, was simply down to hard work.

"We were under a lot of pressure after the tour … that was definitely not up to our standards," he acknowledged.

"Credit to all the guys and coach Russell (Winter) … we said we wanted to go back to what we’re good at and we put in some extra time last week and stuck to what we feel our strengths are. I think it paid off.

"We just want to keep improving and what we put in this weekend … I think it was 9 from 10 … that's the standard we set ourselves."

The Stormers are next in action on Saturday when they host the Reds. Kick-off is at 17:15."

Rumour has it that Rassie asked the coaches to try and play Du Toit and Mostert at blindside loosie - hence the decision of the Stormers to play Du Toit in that position,   In this case though I think the Stormers  made a mistake on Saturday by playing De Klerk at lock and thus preventing Wiese - near the top performance-wise as a loosie in Super Rugby - from starting.      This may have been occasioned by the injury to Wiese in the Crusaders game and a decision to ease him back into the team.

Be it as it may - Mostert was really just about on par in his first two matches at 7 and showed improvement against the Sunwolves - but was captain  of the team who nearly lost against of all teams - the Sunwolves,   In that game he was in some  aspects of loosie play overshadowed by Labuschagne - so even his better performance still was questionable.

Lets hope that sanity at the Stormers prevail this weekend and they play Wiese at 7.

Labuschagne was better in ball protection and recovery and was part of the loosioe combination that overshadowed the combination of the Lions.   He was also better than Mostrt in defence making 14 tackles against the 11 of Mostert,

But then in your book breakdown ball protection and recovery means nothing - so the attack of Mozartitis disease has started as I was afraid it would.    It is not even understood what the words "some aspects of the game"  means.   That means the guy is suffering from the disease as mentioned,

So this P LabuschagneF 1 14 3 0 One turnover conceded and three tackles missed, is better than: F MostertF 0 11 1 0 Tackling at 82% is better than tackling at 92%....conceding a turnover is better than not conceding a turnover. You are a funny guy.

OK - I will try to explain something to you because your reckoning is incomprehensible.    Labuschagne attempted  17 tackles and missed  3   so his net tackle count is 14/  Mostert attempted 12 tackles and missed 1 and his net tackle count is 11    So Labuschagne's net tackle worth is 21% more than Mostert's

The issue is so funny it is unbelievable.    A player can attempt 6 tackles and make all of them and his MTR is zero %   -  another player makes 15 tackles and missed three - so the 6 tackle player is a better defender than the player who makes double the number of tackles he made?

Unbelievable comments by someone who should know better.

That assumes there is no cost for a missed tackle, which is why smart analysts look both at number of tackles made and percentage of tackles made. In that correct view.....11/12 is superior to 14/17. Please think about it, I don't want to have to explain this again.

Inexplicable BS - it reminds me of a test where you came up with the sane BS,   It had \to do with 3  tackles made and none missed by Louw before he was injured at minute 17.  You had no problem with the low tackle count by Louw - but attacked  Kriel because he made 18  tackles and missed 2 in the remainder of the game.   At the time you argued that  Louw had a 100% tackle success rate and Kriel only a 90%  success rate.

Then how do you determine  the value of tackles.    Try-saving tackles are in general rating higher by some as being more important - but I remember a  try-saving tackle on Kerevi was described by you as a weak tackle.   Even if try-saving tackles are given a special higher rating those are rare and far between - so your argument can best e described as utter BS.

You may think so - no sane person would

Well now I am lying about a desperate attempt you made in an effort to protect Louw when he was criticized by me and many others for his performance in that test.   Kriel replaced him when injured and when the comparison was made - ie 1 tackle in every 6 minutes in that test by Louw as against  1 tackle in very 3,5 minutes by Kriel,   You attack the value of the tackles of Kriel and went on to criticize him endlessly in your normal style.

Lappies is just another old favourite of yours, Mike ... and so a little bias posting is to be expected.

To compare him to a class act like Mostert is absurd.

Then again ... we've all seen how you've brought your other two favourites back as our go to Bok center pair. LOL!!!!!

For Mostert to take on an unfamiliar role and do as well as he has shows his class. What would he be like at 7 if left there indefinitely? He is a work horse second to very few, consistently leaving everything he has out on the field.

Is there anything about the sport of rugby that you actually understand?

Lets face facts - I think that the usage of Mostert thus far has had mixed results.  Even though you thought otherwise in the first two matches he  was bog ordinary hyped up by the newspapers beyond recognition - in the  game against the Sunwolves he was much better.

My discussion with Mozart about Labuschagne was purely to plague him - I know what his reaction would be - your absence from the site makes people make funny contributions to keep the site alive.

However, to be quite frank  on the Mostert issue one has to admit he is not a natural loosie as yet - he has quite  a way to go,   Whether he will make the grade is another question.    He has a string of other players competing for that no 7 position and there is no certainty that any of them will be selected,   Fact is in my book the front runner at this stage is Cobus Wiese - but we will have to see how he does in Super Rugby. A number of repeats of his performance against the Crusaders and the rest will be only also-rans.

Just compare the stats of the two players (Wiese and Mostert) as given below:-

Wiese

You must bear in mind that Wiese was playing against one of the strongest teams in Super 15 containing a number of AB  test players.

Try assists                -     1

Ball passing              -    3

Ball  carries              -   14

Meters  gained        -   59

Line breaks                -    2

Defenders  beaten    -   4

Tackles  made            -  14

Tackles  missed         -    1

Wiese was that week the Sanzaar player of the Tournament

Mostert

So lets look now at the same figures of Mostert against one of the weakest teams in Super rugby the past weekend:-

Try assists                -     0

Ball passing              -    2

Ball  carries              -     8

Meters  gained        -   59

Line breaks                -    2

Defenders  beaten    -   3

Tackles  made            -  11

Tackles  missed         -    1

Remarkably similar – but the quality of the opposition swing the whole thing in favour of Wiese.

You may not like the usage of stats - but Rassie will definitely consider them as relevant and very important.

Mike ... I am not in favour of selecting players out of position ... not if we have better options available. That includes Mostert and Du Toit at 7.

You speak of a "string" of contenders competing for the 7 jersey. They way you're carrying on one would swear we have a lot of depth there.

Like who?

Du Preez ... Wiese ... Du Toit ... maybe Jaco Kriel ... vd Walt ... Oupa ... Kirsten ... ?

We already know that Rassie has reserved the 6 jersey for your hero Kolisi ... and that the captaincy could very well go his way too. That must surely mean that guys like Kriel may be seen as a potential blindside flank ... which as you know is also playing him out of position.

Wiese has had one good match ... by no means good enough to warrant his automatic selection.

He can't even make the Stormers 7 jersey his own. Why?

Rassie has committed himself to the quota. I don't think stats will play an important role at all. If it does then guys like Beast and Kolisi won't feature and Rassie would have difficulty making 10% of the team black.

In the first instance I have always insisted that selection should be based on sustained performance by players.   That is why I for instance said that Wiese would be a threat to other players if he repeats that performance against the Crusaders on a continuant basis.   His first game this year for the Stormers also produced a top class performance and the game against the Crusaders was a further confirmation of a real talent coming through.   The guy is only 20 years old and only played in two full games as a 7 this year - he missed out on the Highlanders game because of a slight injury and was on the bench on Saturday because he was on the long list of players suffering from a flue virus last week.

I think Wiese would be back this week in the starting team.   My best advice to you is get the kid on your fantasy team - he is a real point scorer in that comp.

Maybe the string statement perhaps is the wrong term I used,   I was thinking of Jean-Luc du Preez,  Wiese and even Whiteley as a seven potential.   Then there is another youngster Van Dyk of the Stormers who in the game against the Highlanders was the 7 in the Sanzaar squad for the week ahead of for instance Mostert  - a top class performer in his own right.

Same as  you I do not favour the playing of players out of position since it rarely works out,   Maybe Whiteley could be the exception since he is already a loosie.
I agree with you that players like Beast and  Kolisi would not make the grade based on their performances as well as performance stats, but selected on the quota rubbish basis.  I believe  Rassie would look at stats only where he considers competitive White players.

I called Du Toit as a fine number 7 and quite obviously he is. Making strides in this position all the time. A Teun s Stofberg type of 7.

Quotas aside a very good Bok pack could be selected. I also think the backline could be much better on attack this year.

It will be very intetersting to see what Rassie does given the confines he operates under.

Watch out for Wiese - he is as tall as Du Toit and weigh nearly as much as Du Toit as well.   He is a star player and will give Du Toit a run for his money even iro line out play.

When have you ever described an accurate account of what happened on a rugby field?  I cannot remember even ONE such case.  Remember your morzoscope (was that what you called it?)  It was an amazing concoction of false descriptions of what happened and when evaluated found to be so distorted that it was unbelievable.

I cannot really remember what happened in that case.  Question is why was Du Toit the 7 of the week if he was so poor as your version reflects?   Nothing more required - the twisted preju duce will never change.  Tragic really.

One can never accept your describing of incidents as a true version of what really happened and the one you mentioned here is the same as your misrepresentation on the Ruhle try where Du Toit passed the ball while being tackled and he was brought down in exactly the line in which the ball was caught - the 22 meter line is an exact indication of where Du Toit went down and where the ball was caught, so it could never have been a 2 meter forward pass,    In any event the ref was in line with the player making the pass and the player receiving it and it there was any hesitation on his part on the issue he could have called in for a TVM review.    There was in fact no reason for review at all,

It does not help to conjure up rubbish on the site and what you wrote as to Du Toit is always rubbish not worth reading or commenting on. .

Who decide whether a pass is forward - the referee and the TMO or a commentator sitting in th studio?

It really is amazing - in the past you said the comments of the studio panel is rubbish when thy criticize one of your favourites - now suddenly it is gospel.

Go and see for yourself where Du Toit was tackled while passing the ball and - where the recipient caught the ball and where the referee was in the process.  Use the 22 line to assess the situation.

Your 2 meter forward pass was junk.  It really is a joke - if Matfield made that pass and the commentator at halftime said the pass was forward - you would either never have raised the issue or have a seizure if somebody else raised the issue,    Your constant prejudice against some players is ridiculous and foolish on your part.

Yep that's what led all the commentators to conclude it was way forward. I quote: 'The more you look at that pass from Pieter Steph du Toit to Raymond Rhule the more forward it looks' 'Ja with this pass here, the Blues they were filthy about this and rightly so' The image shows Steph on his right leg, planted outside the 22, as the ball leaves his hand. He falls inside the 22 but by then the ball had already been passed.....and it's caught two full strides inside the 22. Only a liar would deny this was forward with the benefit of a review. But if you are desperate to pump up one of your seuntjies I suppose that's fair game.

Some things are a matter of opinion....but a pass made by a player with his foot outside the 22, caught metres inside the 22 is forward. Verified by two pro Stormers/pro Stephanie commentators at the half. Not being willing to admit obvious facts lowers the quality of the Board and isn't 'clever' in any sense.....just low class.
