Hard game for the Bulls especially with some of their recent injuries.

If they win it means all the rest of their games are in Pretoria.

I think the Sharks were the only team that could beat the Bulls at Pretoria or maybe the Stormers.

Any foreign team will not be able to put a pack on the field that is physical enough to beat the Bulls in Pretoria.

Sharkbok You are spot on about the issue. The key for the Bulls will be to top the log and get home games. The final will then be in Pretoria. However, lets look at the potential situation insofar as the play-offs are concerned. As the points stand at present - and it is unlikely that it would change in the final round-robin game the play-off games will be as follows:- * The Brumbies against the Cheetahs * The Crusaders against the Reds Weird as it may seem there is a real chance of the Cheetahs beating the Brumbies - even though most people would find that statement weird. None of the Australian teams in Super 15 managed to beat the Cheetahs this year. The Cheetahs has a bye this week and if they leave for Australia before Friday -the jet lag issue will be eliminated. I think Drotske is well aware of that problem and will take measures to combat that. It must also be borne in mind that the key Brumbeys players were involved in the Lions tests - with rare exceptions they did not cover themselves with glory in those tests. Fact is the danger players for the Cheetahs in the Brumbies are Moore amongst the forwards and Mogg amongst the backline players. The props are on par and I would also say that Strauss is likely to match Moore in any event. As to the locks I would say the situation is 50-50 and the loosies - the scenario is also 50-50 with a slight advantage to the Cheetahs loosies. Home ground advantage is in favour of the Brumbies though. I would say the chances of a Brumbies win is 55-45 - nothing really above that. The other play-off game will be between the Crusaders and the Reds - and the Crusaders at home must be the over-whelming favourites in that case. I would not give the Reds above a 10% chance to pull that one off. Assuming the Bulls and Chiefs manage to beat their opponents this week - the likely semi-final scenario will be as follows: - * If the Brumbies and Crusaders beat their opponents in the play-offs - the situation will be as follows:- Bulls vs Crusaders Chiefs vs Brumbies * If the Cheetahs beat the Brumbies - the situation would be different and the games will be as follows- Bulls vs Cheetahs Chiefs vs Crusaders I do not rate the New Zealand forward packs as really all that impressive. There are some really good forwards in the Crusaders team - namely Read and Sam Whitelock - but will those two be sufficient to give them an edge. The worrying factor is Carter in the backline. The above 3 are the key to any potential success for the Crusaders. All three had a very good game against the Chiefs - but were rather pedestrian in other Super 15 games this year. Be it as it may - the Crusaders does not have a very impressive record in Pretoria games in recent years - so the outcome is going to be 60-40 in favour of the Bulls. I think the more difficult scenario for the Bulls would be if the Cheetahs manage to beat the Brumbies. The Cheetahs may pull off a win against the Bulls is more likely than the Crusaders doing the same. The round-robin games between the Bulls and the Cheetahs were tight affairs this year and the outcome could depend on the bounce of the ball. Based on the latter aspect - I would say the chances of a Bulls victory would be 55-45 in that case. Be it as it may - the key issue remains the Bulls beating the Stormers this coming week. Both teams were relatively poor yesterday - so the Bulls will have to up their performance to really make an impact. The problem was that the Bulls backline did not function well yesterday and Serfontein had a very poor game. On the other hand - the Stormers backline was even worse. They had a miserable flyhalf and an equally miserable 13. I think that on balance the Stormers will not be able to have a flash-in-the pan victory like the one against the Cheetahs, so my guess is a loss against the Bulls. Lets hope the Bulls and Chiefs are both victorious this week and that the Reds get at least a bonus point this weekend. If the Reds lose this weekend and do not get a bonus point in the process - my whole calculation of the play-offs will be in disarray and the Brumbies will face the Reds and the Crusaders the Cheetahs

I think Bulls at home going to be very hard to beat if they get home final... My preference is reds getting cheifs in the semis as the kiwi teams are the aussies bunnies this years - Higly likely that cheetahs will play bulls and cruds v brumbies and cheifs v reds.

Eitherway REds redy to roll - just hopefully not with a final in pretoria......................

Redsman I do not get your point clearly. If the Bulls lose this coming weekend and the Brumbies and Chiefs win their games - the only sceaniro would be that the Bulls will be no 2 on the log and not number 1. Even a bonus point victory will mean the same result - namely the Bulls would still be a spot ahead of the Brumbies on the final log. Both the Chiefs and the Blues put in miserable performances yesterday - I still think the Chiefs will beat the Blues this coming week. Jet lag would play a major role in that game and the Blues will be at a disadvantage in that respect as well. The only differences in log standings would be if the Chiefs win and the Bulls lose - in which event the Chiefs would be no 1 on the log and the Bulls number 2 - or if both loses th Buls ill remain as no 1 and the Brumbies will be no 2. A bulls loss is more likely than a Chiefs loss - but that would not affect the position of the Brumbies - they will remain at 3 on the log. In the play-offs the number 3 team on the log will in essence always play the number 6 team and the number 4 tram the number 5 team. If the Reds lose this weekend without a bonus point - they would be 6th on the log and the Cheetahs 5th. That would perhaps be in their favour - since they will not have to play the Crusaders in Christchurch - but the Brumbies in Canberra. Please bear in mind that teams 1 and 2 on the log do not participate in the play-offs. Unless there are some weird results in the games this weekend. there is no possibility of the play-offs be that the matches you foresee will materialize. However, I cannot see any of the top four teams losing their matches - so I would say it is very likely that the log positions will not change from what they are at present.

Too much is made about the jetlag at this stage of the competition, and if the teams have not, by this time, figured out what to do to minimise the effects, they will never know. It is now secret that (no 1) the worst is traveling back into the time zone, i.e. from west to east and (no 2) the jetlag only really hits you in the second week. Last year's shenanigans by the Sharks, at the sharp end of the competition illustrates that. They traveled to Aus to play the Reds, and beat them. Then the travelled from east to west to play the Stormers and nobody gave them a chance because of the jetlag, but they beat the Stormers. It was only when the travelled back east for the second time that it got them, and still it is not too sure whether it was the jetlag only. They had one hell of a time to get to the final, and it was always going to be a tall order to beat the Chiefs at home after playing the Bulls at Loftus the one weekend, the Reds in Queensland the next, the Stormers (who had a week rest) aty Newlands and then go beat the Chiefs in their own backyard.

I cannot really remember when last the Bulls lost their first game on tour. I also cannot remember when was the last tie they won their second game on tour. The same goes for most of our sides.

Ceradyne There were long tracts of evaluations put on this site about the jet lag issue - and those came from scientific documents you can google. Your statement that jet lag does not affect a team in the first week and set in only in the second week is totally false. What you said about travelling from West to East is true - it is very much worse than it is when travelling from East to west. You mentioned the Sharks team last year in the play-offs. What you conveniently forgot is that in the first half the Sharks played extremely well, but they weakened considerably in the second half and had to barrel to defend against the Reds. The same situation applied in this years game of the Cheetahs and the Chiefs. Up to minute 60 in that game the Cheetahs performed remarkably well and then vanished from sight. Fact is the Blues played in Bloemfontein on Saturday - they could only travel to Johannesburg on Sunday and catch the Sydney flight on Sunday evening. That is likely to get them to Auckland on Monday evening. Jet lag travelling from West to East is scientifically proven to take up to 7 days to wear off and the Blues do not have seven days to get rid of it. So to play down jet lag as a factor in this case is rubbish - said to say.

Ou Maaik, I have read your stuff for some time now and have noted something lately. You twist around what someone says and then uses your revised version to rubbish everybody's arguments. That is excluding your bum chums who always agrees with everything you say. I am not even going to search for the specific post now, but you have done exactly the same with something Mozart said in the last day or two. I have not said that it does not affect the teams in the first week. I have said that it is worse in the second week, and not as severe in the first week. Let me repeat what I have said for easy reference:

Too much is made about the jetlag at this stage of the competition, and if the teams have not, by this time, figured out what to do to minimise the effects, they will never know. It is now secret that (no 1) the worst is traveling back into the time zone, i.e. from west to east and (no 2) the jetlag only really hits you in the second week.

Because so much has been said and researched about jetlag, the medical profession has come up with ways and means to reduce the effects of jetlag. I am not even going to repeat everything, because it could become boring for those not really interested, but I will give you some links on the subject. I have checked up made use of it myself. www.nhs.uk/conditions/Jet-lag/Pages/Introduction.aspx

Something more on reducing the effects: www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Jet-lag/Pages/Prevention.aspx

There are many more examples of what sports people do to overcome it. F1 Racing drivers stay on their "home time" for as long as a week. The Singapore GP is driven at two weeks after the Italian GP at Monza, but the teams only arrive in Singapore on the Monday. It is no use arriving earlier because it is a night streetrace and they cannot begin setting up the track before the Monday. The drivers start testing on Thursday only. Now try and tell me there is something more demanding (mentally and physically) than driving a F1 car at night on a narrow street circuit at speeds of between 175 kph (average speed) and 309kph (top speed). That is 2 hours of intense physical and mental strain.

I have read what you said about jet lag with interest. However, the following extract from a medical science rep[ort indicates nothing about the fact that jet lag is worst in the second week than the first:- How long does jet lag last? Recovering from jet lag depends on the number of time zones crossed while traveling. In general, the body will adjust to the new time zone at the rate of one or two time zones per day. For example, if you crossed six time zones, the body will typically adjust to this time change in three to five days. The above means that even with treatment and following the directives mentioned by you - it is likely that for a rugby player the number of time zones travelled to New Zealand will be circa 6 to 7 days. The quotations mentioned by you is to try and get the effects shortened - not extended to the second week after travel especially taking into account your claim that the effects in the second week of travelling is worse than in the first week. In travelling from East to West the effects wear off in about half the time it takes from West to East - so even normally if the travel is from Australia to SA it will probably wear off in two or three days. There is no statement of any scientific value that said the effects in the second week is worse than in the first week - so if you can find anything I would love to look at it. What I said by Mozart's statements (clangers is 100% correct from statements made by him. Let me quote from his ranblings:- "Why? Because lineout wins are not why we choose our flanks." In other words it is not a requirement for flanks to play a role in line out plays. What is wrong in pointing out that it is a clanger?

You see Mike, that is exactloy why I avoid arguing with you. You always twist everything around. I have never said that there is scientific evidence. I have even repeated what I have said, but you still keep on twisting what I have said. I have said that we have seen that the teams, meaning the SA teams, sre worse in the second week. I have also said that the nedical proffesion has come up with ways and means to reduce the effects of jetlag. So, you can start writing another thesis on the subject if you like. I never read past the second or third sentence and to be frank, I doubt if there are many who do that.

As for Mozart's remark, you are doing exactly what I am accusing you of and then you go and even help me indicate exactly what I am saying. I do not see anywhere that Mozart has said that flanks do not have a role to play in line-outs. If you are too think to understand that he is saying that line-out play is not one of the core functions of flankers, then so be it. For the record, me and Mozart are not exactly bossom buddies, in case you were thinking of accusing me of defending him.

Ceradyne Lets get this one straight - or just get the info dredge up what Drotske himself said about the game against the Chiefs the Cheetahs played their first week in New Zealand and the game against the Highlanders a week later. He said that in the first week their whole system was disrupted and the players struggled to get normal sleep or anything in getting their stamina up. In the second week the players got proper sleep and they played the fool with the highlanders in the second week there. There may be some substances as mentioned in Wikipedia - which racing drivers can use to alleviate the effects of jet lag - which are forbidden as performance enhancing drugs for athletes - so that may be an explanation. However - there really is no real indication as to the effects of jet lag has on matches in the second week - other than being done in by a stronger team. I would also suggest both you and Mozart study what Meyer said about the role of loosies in line out play - before Mozart specifically makes sweeping statements about something which in fact is also a real function of loosies. The mere fact that the royal "we" does not consider line out wins when we select loosies. can be interpreted that loosies do not have a function in line out play. Mozart tends to make sweeping statements when he wants to justify his own pedestal players and does not consider the implication and interpretations that stems from those statements. These statements are normally made to hide deficiencies of his preferred players in the case where statistics point at the shortcomings of the relevant players.

Dont be surprised if the semi's dont contain 1 Aussie team. Lets remember that there was massive incentive for the Aussie teams this year. Lions were coming to town. Last chance to make an impression and get picked for the squad. A once in a career opportunity for most players. Guys need to play out of their skins.

With this in mind, Aussie teams have been really good this year. Lions have come and gone. What is the incentive to play for now? Where is the motivation to get back on the horse coming from now? Lions tour has come and gone and the Aussies were run off their feet in the last test. Its going to be tough for those key players minds to be where they need to be leading into the most important weeks of the Super rugby comp.

It will be a massive test of Jake White's ability to get those players heads back in the game so soon and performing for a "lesser" cause. Papers will be slamming their 3rd test performance this week and that wont do much good.

@ Boklogic I think the opposite - Brrumbies players have come back with BIG game experience playing tougher opponents and test match rugby back to S15. Mowen / Leliliafano will come back playing out of their skins in my prediction... Brumbies and Jake got lots to prove and REDS.... Well if you could predict which Reds team was going to show up each week you'd be a genius... I don't think they even know... All I do know is that they have extremely tight culture and QC will be out to prove HE is the man for Tri-nations (I still refer to it as such as argentina just no that interesting). @ Mike - my (hopeful) prediction as follows.... ......................................... Bulls play Cheetahs / Chiefs play Reds / Brumbies play Cruds

Mike then qoutes scientific evidence that shows ou windpomp is talking rubbish. Game set and match to Mike.

Mike it may be some comfort to you that I have had oaks arguing with me that altitude at loftus plays no role.

The simple facts are that any side travelling from down under to play the bulle at loftus are at a considerable disadvantage due to the double whammy of travel and altitude.

So yes if the bulle top the log they have a reasonably good chance of winning the final

The Sharks proved what I said at the begining of the year - the bulle are the third best SA side - barring injuries and departures.

Oh the might of SA rugby - we could have had 4 of the top 7 teams? The kiwis must be in awe of us not that they will admit it.Takw even the Cheetahs on Saturday. Man they left behind so many tries it could have been a huge win. Nice to see Naka now schooling Sir John who should be defrocked! Bwahahahahahahhahahaha

But this blog is not about jetlag it asks the question - can the Bulls beat the Stormers at Nuweland?  I suppose they can, the Stormers are quite a depleated bunch with a string of injuries.  It will however not be easy and the Bulls will HAVE to up their game if they are to walk away victorious.  If they play anything as kak as they did at home (nogal) against the Sharks the Stormers will hurt them.  Difference being that Joe can kick better than Lambottom.  Fact, live with it!

Redsman There is no way in the world that the Bulls would be in the play-offs. Even if the Chiefs and Reds win with bonus points and the Bulls loses - the scenatio would remain that the Bulls will end up below the Brumbies on the log - since the Brumbies will only get to63 points and will still be below the Bulls on the log - because of the number of games won by the Bulls compared to those won by the Bulls. When taking the position of the Reds into account there is a possibility that they can end up third on the log if they beat their opponents with a bonus point - and the Brumbies lose without a bonus point. I think that is highly unlikely and not really a possibility. What is even possible is the loss by the Reds without a bonus point that would place them sixth on the log. The more likely scenario is that the log positions will remain as they are at present and your hopeful play-off possibilities are just an unachievable hope. And there are only four teams in the play-offs in any event. Teams 1 and 2 on the log is not participating in the play-odds - those matches are confined to teams 3 to 6 on the log.

The odds must be on the bulle. Lets be realistic here Fred.

However if ou Allistair had to beef up the side our chances would rise to possibly even  50/50. I do hope Maaaikei is not going to come with another no chance story although our cnaces of winning if this advice is not taken must be low  - say 30%

First it is vital in the pack that the formidable and classy Tiaan Liebenberg reappears. Next play a loose trio of Fourie, Armand (8) and Elstadt. A pack of Kitshoff, Liebenberg, Harris, Etzebeth, Steenkamp, and those three lossies shuold give the bulle somthing to think about.

Lets not also forget about the Newlands factors. Sides get weak knees when coming here.

Hopefully Jean will be back. Its a big pity Grant is still out as Jantjes is far to shaky for my liking. However play Jean and Allende at center and Van den Heever on the wing. Aplon as a super sub when gaps open up later in the game.

I feel complelled to give Allisatair this advice. It is problematic though as if the Stormers beat the bulle and the bulle dont top the log we will not have the Super 15 winner. However ou Allistair is unlikely to take my advice although the way the beefed up Sharks starting 8 pummelled the wee bulle could make even Allistair take note.(Once Bissie, Jannie, Alberts and Deysel came ofF the sharks were on the back foot in the forwards. Chances are though that all this passed ou Allistair by - We shall see)

Come to think of it hopefully Muncher also took note. Maybe Beeno is right yet again - Hahahahahahahahaha

One of my biggest regrets ever rugbywise is that the 940 kg power pack of Kitshoff, Liebenberg, Malherbe, Etzebeth, Bekker, Burger, Vermuelen and Elstadt was never seen. What the sharks starting 8 did to the wee bulle was mild compared to the slaughter that would have happened.  Mercy prevailed!

Beeno I am the first one to realize that altitude does play a role in team performances - it always has and always will. Matter of fact is that in the case of the new Zealand and Australian teams coming to SA and play their first game in coastal venues they suffer the effect of jet lag in their first game and the effects of Sltitude games in their second game. Happened to both the Highlanders and the Blues this year. However, the altitude thing is physical - whilst the jet lag issue is far more complicated. I have problems with the Bulls as well - they struggle against the stronger forward combinations in SA teams - which is not the case in playing New Zealand and Australian teams. And the backline play is effected by it. So I think that the Bulls may struggle against the Stormers pack as well. However, in the interest of local teams - I hope the Bulls beats the Stormers - who can gain nothing by beating the Bulls on Saturday. The other issue is that I think the Stormers had a very poor game against the Kings and if they repeat that one - they will have no chance against the Bulls. Jantjies had a horror - even though he seemed to kick at goal effectively in that game. De Jongh was totally ineffective as well. De Allende had another good game - so the chances are that the Stormers can beat the Bulls if D Villiers plays and they move De Allende to 13 or play De Villiers there - but the likelihood of that is remote and would not be in the interest of Springbok rugby. Give De Villiers another month's break and let him come back in the Championship - that would be best for SA as a whole.

Mike the bulle will NOT struggle against a Stormers pack containg scurra, steenkamp, Deon and carr. Half the pack are lightweights with deon being the only lightwieight i would pick. He has to bring in Tiaan, Armand and Elstadt to ahve a chance of getting on top in the forwards. Jean and Allende as I said must be the center combo and van den Heever on the wing. Then we have a reasonable chance.

I agree that this is not a good one to win as it would finish off the SA and bulle tittle hopes. Bit of a dillema for a Stormers supporter. Bit like the Sharks on Saturday with that last kick by Viljoen. However the pakyers will no doubt be going for a win.To finish 7th on the log would be a credible performance given the 18 injuries suffered this year.

I feel however that the bulle have been riding an unbelievable streak of luck in the Super 15. They have three titles but two were burgled via refs. It should at this stage be one to each of Sharks, Stormers and bulle. This year they would defintely have been third on the SA Conference table behind the Stormers and Sharks but for injuries and departures and are now in a position to win the title!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean that so distorts things its unbelievable really.

The consequence of all this is delusional postings by guys like Owen Meany who speak of the bulle legends and bulle legends in the making. Bwahahahahahahahhahahaha hilarious really.

Beans, BMT, that is the difference between the Bulls and the Stormers/Sharks. The first S14 title the Bulls won could have gone either way, all the Sharks had to do was kick the ball out and they would have won, but the brain fart by F Steyn (If I remember correctly) kicked the ball in field, a move that ultimately cost them the game. The Stormers and Sharks may have been better sides, but when it comes to winning championships, all that matter is the ability for a team to hold its nerve. Stormers and Sharks can't, and the Bulls can. The engraving on the Super Rugby trophy will back up my claim.

Bluebok the last try by Habana was only as a consequence of a well documented error by the ref.

Craig Joubert did a rugby world cup final on the Stormers and blew the Stormers loose trio out of the game and coached the bulle loosies as Schalk Burger so famously observed - a shocker by Craig.

So that makes it 1 each as I saidaaprt from ref error  and explodes the myth about bulle holding their nerve. What happens to the bulle on tour. Nerves get to them? hahahahahahahha - they become the blue calves!

So only one title deserved Bluebok. Now the opportunity to win another by default! Incredible!!!!!!

Beeno the realist putting things in their correct perspective.

I have always said it and I will always maintain this: If you put yourself in a position where a mistake by a referee/umpire can cost you the game, then you deserve what is coming to you. The Sharks and in particular Frans Steyn, back in 2007, did exactly that. They got a dubios try, IIRC, and then the next thing they got a penalty, and as was said millions of times since that day, all they needed to do was to kick the bloody ball out. They idn't and they got the shit end of the stick. For that they deserved what they got in the end.

the key for the bulls title hopes lie in winning this weekends game against the stormers, given this is a dead rubber match, the stormers should really return the favour the bulls did them in 2010 when the bulls picked a 2nd string bulls outfit which helped the stormers secure a semifinals at home, stormers can field a weak team against the bulls so that the bulls can lock up the No1 over all leader spot.
hard to pick past the stormers at home, but if anyone can do it it will be the bulls who have yet to lose a game to any saffa team.
stormers by 11

IMO the following will happen this weekend,,,,
crusaders will beat the hurricanes and lock up 4th spot.
chiefs will beat blues and finish either 2nd or first, but im picking 1st cos i think stormers will beat bulls.
brumbies to run riot over the force.
i get a feeling the waratahs will beat the reds, but the outcome is irellevant, cos the reds will remain 5th over all.

the leaderboard by the time the finals come round could look like this,,,
1 chiefs
2 brumbies
3 bulls
4 crusaders
5 reds
6 cheetahs

the real key is the bulls stormers match, if bulls win it, they will be 60/40 favourites to win it against all opposition, with the crusaders and chiefs being their toughest finals opponents.

Bweeno sounds like you want to throw the game against the Bulls. Good excuse for getting yoor arse kicked i guess or could that be construed as tantamount to match fixing. Would be funny if the Stormers won though and handed the Kiwis a home ground advantage for the final. Do your best mate. Rest assured the Kiwis will be backing your hapless team to win for a change...

If Pietersen isn't healthy the Bulls chances of winning go way up unless Jantjies has found his kicking books he misplaced from last year.

Should be a cracker of a game - don't see the Stormers taking this one off - they could fall two or three spots on the log if they lose and probably will take pride in finishing 7th just outside the playoffs.

In light of Link's ascendency I think Reds may rest a few more key wallaby players in the lead up to finals.... Having watched his media conference - afraid to say you saffas didn't even get a look in... All about beating the cheats (aka ABs)!!!
