So we have reached the halfway mark and I just wondered which players people would select based on the players form up to date.

Excluding those that are injured or playing abroad

15 - Le Roux, Needs to work on his defence a bit but still a vital cog. Mvovo is hot on his heels.

14 - Mvovo, been making some good yards, good defence and great individual skills.

13 - S'thole, none of the other 13's have put up their hands. JJ has been missing in action. De Jongh is still a  liability, Jean is more suited to 12.

12 - Jean De Villiers, Serfontein has been a let down, no one from the Cheetahs, De Allende is the only other possibility, needs to work in his distribution a bit more

11 - JP, not been setting the world alight but has experience and have really good at working off the ball.

10 - Frans Steyn, face it, SA game resolves around physicality and he punishes anybody in his channel, definitely not a Braam, he is gaining his form, monster boot and will get better with his passing game as he gets use to the position.

9 - Pretorius, Difficult one, we got the wee Pretorius in form and scoring tries and his defence has gotten better. Hougaard has still some way to go but it is starting to look positive. Venter will be my backup or Faf De Klerk

8 - Warren Whitely, really skilful for an 8, not to bulky and not to small. Good pace, hands, line out option and happy to mix it up.

7 - Deysal, the man has been his industrious self making the hard yards.

6 - Coetzee, been working really hard on his break down game and is finally showing his true potential

5 - Lood, very hard one to pick with so many fives injured. Matfield has had his day.

4 - Alberts, might not have the height but boy is he the last guy you want to run into

3 - Jannie, not my choice but we just don't have any good tightheads around. Malherbe is getting some game time but the Stormers have been really week come scrum time.

2 - Bismark, need I say more.

1 - Nakyana, I know his been left on the side line but he really put the Crusaders under pressure and I think that he is one of our better scrummagers. His height will also make it difficult for the taller props as he can stay low

A few points of disagreement.   Sithole is raw and not the answer at all.  Sadie showed class in most matches he played in.
Francais Steyn is a distribution nightmare and the chief reason for the serious dead backline syndrome displayed by the Sharks.   His passing game is poor and problematic - inaccurate is the key word.   His only asset is kicking at goal.  Speed deficient and very questionable on defense.    It would be a serious risk to play him at flyhalf - his only asset is long distance goal kicks - for the rest he is a serious liability.  (Must say both Mallett and Naas Botha are extremely critical of his performances at flyhalf).
Van der Walt thus far was by some distance the best no 8 on display in Super 15 - he is off for a few weeks - but will be back in three weeks time.   I assume your pick was only based on yesterdays performances.
Jannie Du Plessis is a nightmare - he is not up to standard anymore.  I would pick Malgerbe ahead of him any time.   At least Malherbe is not a yellow card candidate and despite his poor support by locks in the scrums he is reasonably strong in most departments of the game.
Deysel thus far has had less than two games playing time.     He had a very good game yesterday - and is more of a typical 7 favoured by some fans.   Hard to assess on one game only - yesterday was his only starting game this year.
Alberts is definitely more a lock than a 7.   His best games this year was at lock - not at 7.   I would like to see him more involved in mauls - careful observation indicates a tendency to stand around behind mauls and he rarely gets involved early in that facet of the game.
Pretorius is a thinking player a capacity which is shown by De Klerk and Reinach as well.   Hougaard has shown very little this year - what is clear he is not a wings backside - or perhaps he is.

Frans Steyn is far from the perfect flyhalf, and far from the perfect inside centre- but when comparing him against the other options, he could be a good choice.
I think it is between him and Goosen for the starting position. Their has to be a position on the field for Frans Steyn's boot, be it flyhalf or inside centre.
Any forward pack that is dominating - and has Frans Steyn's boot, has a good chance of winning. If he could only get his drop goals back to where they were, he would be lethal. His 60 metre drop goal attempt over the weekend was pretty close. We could have him sitting in the pocket in his own half taking drop kicks if playing at 10.
Frans is strong with ball in hand, one of the better crash balls in the game. His passing game is good- when compared to most other backline players in South Africa, but not great when compared to OZ & ABs. Although the like of Morne, Pat Lambie are no better at passing.

Having Frans at ten would allow devilliers to play at 12.
A backline of:9.   Fourie Dupreez10. Frans Steyn12. Jean Devilliers (captain)13. Jaque Fourie14. JP15. Willie LeRoux11. Habana
Goosen could be on the bench, to cover flyhalf and fullback.
Forwards:1. Beast2. Bismaark3. Coenie4. Alberts5. Matfield6. Marcell Coetzee7. Duane Vermuelen8. Kankowski

@Arthur John
I am selecting a team of the best players available, age is irrelevant. If you are going to comment, you do need to select your own team.

Not sure how many SuperXV games you get to see, but Matfield is still the best lock in the world at kick offs and lineouts. Give me a younger specialist number 5 lock that is better- and I will select him. Opposition teams are so scared of Matfield, that they do not throw the ball anywhere near him- which is difficult because he is in the middle of the lineout.
Jaque Fourie's defensive performance at the end of the year tour was better than anything we have seen in Meyers reign.
Fourie Dupreez is still a better test scrummie than what is available.

 Sharkbok
To be quite frank Steyn's boot is not the issue.  He can kick two or three long range penalties - but carries a lot of negative baggage that neutralises backline performance.
Is 6 points in long distance penalties enough if he destroy chances at scoring tries by his performances?    I think iot would be a disaster to select him at flyhalf - he will not make the grade on international level when he under-performed on Super 15 level.
He is the only no 12 in SA franchises who never scored a try this year.   The reason is his speed impediment.   Yesterday there was one incident where he had more than a 2 meter advantage over Skosan in chasing a rolling ball in the Lions goal area and Skosan passe him and  beat him by nearly 2 meters.   He looked no faster than our tight 5 players.  A player with that speed cannot play on international level in backlines - it really is unthinkable.
The boot is fine - the rest is poor.

A few minor disagreements and 1 major. The minors - Forie du Preez at 9 his backup is Faf de Klerk before Sarel Pretorius. Can you imagine what this guy will do behind a strong experienced pack? I say you MUST try him there at least once just to see. Jean Deysel is good but has been fairly aver age lately luckily there are many options. Why play Alberts out of position? Vermeulen maybe a little bit better than Whitely although Whiteley is gaining. And my Major disagreement. Janie du Plessis he is by far not the best nor the best disciplined. Even Adriaanse who is still adjusting and growing is showing better form. jannie has poor defense ill discipline, poor scrummaging discipline, gives away too many points. try again I'm sure you will find an average tight head with discipline is better than one who "thinks" he is the best and has awful discipline and defense, his attack is woeful at best too.

An interesting discussion - on the players at present.
I think the following makes a stong case for inclusion:-
Le Roux, Mvovo, De Villiers (at 12).Vermeulen. Bismarck du Plessis
The following are average cases for inclusion:-
JP Pietersen (Habana scored his first try for Toulon this weekend and may be a better choice in view of Pietersen's speed deficiency), Alberts as a lock. Mtawarire,
The following claims are tenuous and based on single facets of the games with questional all round abilities:-
Matfield, Francois Steyn.
The problem remains at 13 - where De Villiers is not as good a center as he is at 12 and at 10 - where we need a thinking flyhalf - not a robot with the possible destruction of backline play a real possibility.

how awesome is jacques du plessis at the moment??? o_O

just watched the bulls highlanders game again, and that dudes got some serious power.

i like the thought of him at 7, along with a possible lady elixzabeth and stephanie playing 4 & 5 in the future, and u would have three awesome lineout options, and thre awesome ball carriers.

doess anyone else think jacques du plesiss could be even stronger and more physical then lady elizabeth???

@ceradyne,
one team based on the weekend, another based on who would u pick for the with all facts under consideration.

@saffex,
im surprised u couldnt fit steyn into ur starting XV, dare i say mikey is starting to rub on u???

I said from day one that Jacques du Plessis was the real deal and my call as a future Bok after his display for the Baby Boks last year.

He is up there with Etzebeth in raw strength. He is one handful to stop and the Bulls should use him more on the charge.

Its a must having Eztebeth, du Plessis and Steph du Toit in the Bok starting side. du Toit is the smallest of the trio at 2m and 117kg so would be the obvious choice to start at 7 with du Plessis and Eben as the lock pair

du Plessis has been the find of the year along with Faf de Klerk at 9 for the Lions.

du Plessis won gold at the junior world athletic champs, throwing the javelin

Sas I am a big Frans fan but I prefer Serfontein at 12

Willie, JP, AN Other, de Villiers, Habana, Frans, du Preez.
Beast, Bismarck, Jannie, Flip, Etzebeth, Alberts, Louw, Vermeulen

I wish we had better options at 13, but all I see is a bunch of good provincial centres like de Jongh ( the best), Jordaan, Sadie....non centres like JJ...and declining centres like Fury. It's a big problem.

But given the new political  realities I'm guessing either Sithole or Mvovo will get a look in. If Mvovo plays JP might have to go to 13, which would give us massive defence in the 10, 12, 13 axis. Otherwise I'm guessing it's Sithole, who is probably a step up on JJ in any case.

That team of yours will be beaten by Outer Mongolia -  You have a dead backline guaranteed - with a physical player who failed to make a line break this year and is the only player who have not scored a try or even made one line break at 10 and whose defense is a joke in bad taste.   You have a loosie combination who can carry balls in traffic and do nothing else.  Vermeulen is better than the other two 0 but one is a lock masquerading as a loosie - the other one is bot producing the goods 0 even for his Club. And then you have Jannie - the latest yellow card recipient.
And after two decent games - not good ones - De Jongh is suddenly the best.  What a joke 0 the man failed badly in his atest two tests and was a nightmare on defense last year - what a joke.
