In the absence of SH rugby and bearing in mind Ceradyne's constant preaching about how good NH club rugby is I set time aside to watch the following Heineken Cup games this weekend:-

*   Ulster vs Montpellier

*   Clermont vs Harlequins

*   Toulon vs Cardiff

*   Munster vs Gloucester

Ulster vs Montpellier

This actually was the nicest game thus far this weekend - some really attractive rugby was played and Ulster definitely showed some class - Pienaar was outstanding.

The match was a bit one-sided though and I was thinking this shows that some good rugby is being played in the NH.    My mood was spoilt when Ceradyne said that Montpellier has been weakened by ijuries to players.

When a weakish team is fielded it often happens that the opposition falls into a trap and does not play good rugby.   To the credit of Ulster they did not fall into that trap.

Clermont vs Harlequnns

This game can at best be described as a mess.   It was basically made up of ball handling mistakes and turnovers in possession.   It was disappointing to see how poor the skillset of players was - especially as to ball handling.

Toulon vs  Cardiff

Watching this game was a serious waste of time.   Cardiff must have the weakest tight five forwards in the whole competition- hence the farce that ensued in the second half.  Halftime the score was 15 -13 in favour of Toulon - with all the Toulon points coming from penalty kicks -  basically resulting from the poor display of the Cardiff forwards.

Then followed the complete collapse of the Cardiff forward pack and the unique first I have ever seen in any rugby match I watched - the awarding of three penalty tries to Toulon.     In the process the referee was handing out yellow cards to Cardiff players like it was unbelievable.    Toulon actually managed to score one try through a backline attacking move.   However despite the Cardiff joke forwards they actually managed to score two tries by individual players.

Was this game a farce?   It was and was a waste of time to watch,

Munster vs Gloucester

Gloucester obviously is a weak team and the game was marred by penalties awarded against both sides   Ball handling skills was not much better than in the  Clermont - Harlequins  game.

Saffex is always on about CJ Stander and I was disappointed to see he was on the Munster bench.    He got about 5  minutes playing time at the very end of the game when the outcome was already on the cards.  Is he another seriously over-rated player?   The fact hat e do not make the Munster starting line up indicates as such.

Summary

On average the games confirm my opinion - the rugby played by NH clubs are basically on par with the level the Vodacom Cup is played in SA.   Some of the stronger clubs might be able to compete on Group 1 CC level  - nothing more.

Incidentally Edinburgh won their game against Perpignan as well,  During broadcasting of the Munster game - te commentators said the club is now known as the Edinboks.

Set time aside from what Oom.....hahaha. But there is always something one can learn, even in your case. And I see CJ Stander is following the traditional path for all these young guys our  coaches were "so stupid" to let go.

There is no difference between the young players who are bench players and the experienced ones who only manage to make the bench for club sides.   In the case of the young players Safffex have touted we have Stander - in the case of the experienced ones we have Morne Steyn and Gurthro Steenkamp.   The difference is that the latter two were selected erroneously for the Springbok side - end of story.

Oh  I get it, you set aside time from running down Morne and Alberts.......OOM you are an obsessive fella. Say didn't Dave have some WP  lock he was convinced was a monster....went to a  British club when WP preferred de Kock Steenkamp . Did he do any  better than Stander?

I think you are referring to Quinn Roux - Saffex will know what happened to him.    However, it really is not important.   Saffex often have some weird selection - often based one match wonders or the size of players.  I do not base my own observations on same.

I look at what actually happen during games and if others differ - I look at the stats as well - whilst trying to watch the game again making note of the participation in particular of the controversial players.

I do not run down players like Morne Steyn and Alberts - they do it themselves by what they actually produce during games.

Seems Quinn Roux is in the Leinster second team and CJ Stander is on the bench for Munster.  And letting those guys go supposedly proved our coaches were clueless?

Maybe you boys should try get your facts straight before making wild assumptions about certain players. CJ Stander is making his way back into rugby after an injury.
As for Quinn Roux, you will find he to was out injured for some time and has been on the Leinster bench all season - more than he was doing at the Stormers.
You lot really just look at a name and suck a load of rubbish out of the sky. In future why not find out the facts first before resorting to complete nonsense.

Hope that helps!!

Oh sure Dave, Quinn is making his  way back.....by the long road. He played for the B team in early December and hasn't even made his way onto the bench for the A team in January!

That's what we would expect from a Springbok candidate? Face it these guys are already slipping away. Ludeke and Alistair Coetzee had it dead right.

Wrong Moz, not sure where you sucked those stats from but you will find that Quinn has started and been on the bench for the Leinster senior side from Sept to Dec. Go check their website!!! There has only been one game in Jan.........he got injured against Edinburgh in Dec...........the guy has made enough of an impression to have his contract extended after missing most of his first season with a serious shoulder injury.

So Quinn is anything but slipping away, he is getting game time, something he never did under useless Coetzee, who preferred the useless de Kock Steenkamp.

CJ Stander broke his finger and had to spend much of his time sitting in the stands...............I suspect you have never seen this lad play???

Ludeke and Coetzee have got both selections horribly wrong.......just like Meyer has for not going after CJ. CJ and Arno Botha are our best young loosies, with CJ being the best of the lot.

Just pointing out the facts re these guys involvement up North, its anything but what you make it out to be.........and its not difficult to make the call that Coetzee got it wrong, given his preference for the very average de Kock Steenkamp. Coetzee has made many bad calls.

Oh yes and by the way we were both wrong when it comes to Ludeke, he had nothing to do with CJ leaving. CJ was starting for the Bulls at the time he left and was called into the Bok training squad. He did not leave because he was not getting recognition or game time in SA.

 Were you not one of those chaps who predicted Strauss, Lions captain, would be Bok captain? Watching your predictions is like watching a blind man play minesweeper., and every bit as humorous.

 Yep I liked Josh Strauss for good reason, he was a damn good blindside. Nope I never said anything about Josh being Bok captain. Damn fine player and leader. I did say he was the best leader in SA at the time.

Fresh coming from you who is stupid enough to tell us Goosen is a fullback.......what utter garbage

Yep certainly was a fan and was certainly calling for him to be in the squad, but I would not have had him starting ahead of CJ Stander and Arno Botha at 7 and 8.

Good player and great leader, certainly Bok squad material without a doubt.

He will play for Scotland instead

 Any more stupid than backing Lambie and Goosen on the basis of a factual supposition? You are quite the puzzle, a wonderful case study.

Well lets just see where Goosen ends up then bright spark.......10 or 15 for the Boks

Let me guess, you reckon Jake has got it wrong by backing Lambie as his 10 and saying he will go on to play there for the Boks?

You really are easy pickings

 Saffex

We will see next week which players are selected for their clubs.  By the way I was not overly -impressed by Saracens today - which team  is the present log leaders in the Aviva competition?

What does the selection of next week got to do with anything......your problem is that you see CJ on the bench and then jump to the conclusion that he is not up to scratch.......how bloody stupid is that?

Why not start by finding out the facts first?

The Saracens game was a good one.......you speak as if the standard of CC or S15 rugby is so much better........well its not and that's a fact.

You will see that when the Sharks play Saracens is a few weeks time - the Sharks will be taking on Saracens without their England players and I bet you it will be a close game.

Saffex

It could be a close game because most of the Sharks players have played no rugby for three months and they are playing in the NH under conditions they are not really used to.

I did not write of CJ Stander - my comments were I was disappointed because he was on the bench - came on for 4 minutes and did nothing in that time.   I saw Mozart's comments and yours and my remarks relate to team selection next week.

You may be overrating Stander - he definitely last year when he did play a few games in Super 15 and on CC level  - was nowhere near either Arno Botha or Labuschagne insofar as performance is concerned.   Have not seen enough of him to make a call on his potential though.

What is the log position in the Aviva championship at this stage - please?

Wrong, he was better than Labascagne and on a par or even better than Arno Botha.

Bit difficult for him to make an impression in 5 min don't you think?

I am not sure what the log position is at this stage, I just watch the matches but don't follow the log positions that closely.

 I was the one calling for Josh Strauss to be selected for Boks duty and captaincy.
Come on you lot, be honest, if the ABs did not have the proud history that we have, and we started from a blank slate, would you lot pick any of the current ABs in your World 15? Have a good think .
