When the Boks or the ABs are within a metre or two of your goal line, perhaps the smart play is to go offside right under your poles. If the infraction is closer to the touch line the possibility of a miss may swing things. But go offside right under your poles and the incentive to take 3 points seems overwhelming in a close game.


So you concede 3 points and probably pick up 65 metres. Seems like a no brainer except at the death if 3 points are crucial.


So often you see teams desperately defending these situations,  getting a player yellow carded and still conceding a try.

I think Australia was very good at killing key phases in the 2011 WC, though they really ought to have been penalised a lot. You should forward your post to José.

Often thought about that too...rather trade 3 points gift than 7 points...ofcourse it depends on 3 other factors, the stage of the game, the points difference and the streng ths of the opposition.
