It is always difficult to evaluate player performances in Super Rugby so lets see where the vcarious playwers stand according to Foxsport:-

Loosehead Props

Stephen Kitshoff is number 1 in that position followed by Tendai Mtawarira

Hookers

Malcolm Marx is by  distance the best hooker in the competition
Locks
Pieter-Steph Du Toit is number 2 on the list of lock as and De Jager is no 3
Loosies
Jean-Luc du Preez is the only SA player in the top 5 of the loosies
Flyhalfs
The top performing flyhalf in the competition is Willemse - with Pollard ahead of Jantjies in the rankings.
Centers
De Allende is in the top 5 of the centers

SA Player deficiencies
Looking at the ratings it is clear that we have some real deficiencies in players in certain positions and the most problematic ones are the following:-
Tighthead PropLoos ies (other than Du Preez)ScrummiesCenters - no 13 remains problematicWings

@Brycy. Don’t you worry, mate we have Rassie now. All our problems have been solved with his appointment. He is God’s gift to mankind and England have to be shaking in their boots and so should you guys.

Mike ... you say that Kitshoff is our best loosehead ... REALLY? ... and yet he was cleaned up by the worst tighthead in the country (according to you) ... Dreyer.

That should tell you a story. Either Kitshoff isn't as wonderful as you say he is ... or ... Dreyer isn't as bad as you say he is.

Either way ... you have it wrong on both counts.

Then we have the Beast. Another one of your favourites ... and funny enough, also cleaned up by that very same Dreyer ... at ever encounter.

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahaaa!!!

Are you seeing a trend here? One where you keep insisting on selecting the worst of the worst?

Why is that? Do you think that total ignorance has something to do with it? Just asking.

Tank Du Toit was the man ... apparently ... now he no longer is. Oops!!! A quick 180 here from "clever" ...

Jesse Kriel was the man too... a rugby god ... our answer at 13 ... and ... um ... well ... he too no longer is. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahaha!!! Another oopsie from ol "clever" ... !!

Willemse is too young for test match rugby ... right? ... well ... that seems to be changing as we speak, isn't that right, "clever" ...

I wonder how long it'll take you to see De Allende for what he is ... a useless liability to any and every team he plays for? I expect we'll see another 180 from you shortly, "clever".

I see Lood has been demoted to 3rd. Haaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahaaa!!

We have a top class tighthead in Louw ... so no issues there.

We have several world class wings available ... so no issues there either, "clever" ...

We have a few good scrummies to consider as well ... so no issues there.

Once again I see you've read an article and it's shaped your opinion. You just can't help yourself, can you? Not a single original thought. What a bore!!

Stick to your stats, "clever" ...

Mr Cut...question....are u still sticking with Dreyer? I might point out after folding in the scrum and conceding a number of penalties he was taken off early in the game.

Listen CC

I know you do not care about factual issues - the above is based on factual developments and not personal prejudice.

Dreyer for instance - you have forgotten about the disaster he was last year in tests and fact is he was not all that wonderful this year in Super Rugby.   He was average to even poor this year - look at the last game against the Reds as well.   He has not been once in the Team of the Week of Sanzaar for instance.  After last years test disaster - he lost at least two tests for the Springboks when his scrumming was penalized scrum after scrum  -  he as in the end replaced by Wilco Louw at Tighthead - should  we go with him again?   I  think only you would support that one - nobody else.

Now lets get to Kriel - in the above post outside center was one place that was mentioned as not being supported by facts and you went on the normal attack against him when it was indicated that factual performance leaves question marks about that position.

Tank du Toit is not mentioned above as well - I am not sure about that one and he may not be in the mix at all.   Why bring him in here?

As to De Allende and De Jager you can criticize them because of personal dislike as much as you like - performance data indicates otherwise,   Fact is De Jager has been good in virtual all matches he played in.   Your favourite Mostert was really not good enough at loosie - neither as a lock.   De Jager is third on the ratings behind Retallick and Du Toit - that should tell everyone something.

I do think Willemse is world class - but he was excluded from selection in the June tests by SARU - when they sent him to the U20 WC starting the end of May and lasting through to the third week of June.   I think they want to prepare him further for international competition, by repeating what they did with Pollard in the past.

As to the wings I agree with you there are plenty to be considered - but statistically there was only one wing who stood out this year  and that was Dyantyi.   He is injured at present and has not played at all in the last few rounds.   Combrinck and Tandwe played in very few matches and they did not provide statistical proof of what happened,   The other two are Nkosi and Mapimpi.   All that is certain is that Lleyds and co from the Stormers will not be in the squad.

Lol!!

My point, Denny is that our worst tighthead is cleaning up both Mike's best Bok looseheads.

Surely that should be reason enough to review our loosehead selections and make a few changes.

My starting tighthead would be Wilco Louw with Dreyer as his cover.

My starting loosehead would not be either of Mike's favourites ... namely Beast and Kitshoff.

We have much better in van Rooyen, Dylan Smith and Schoeman.

Dreyer should never be anywhere near the Springbok team - he was too poor a scrummager when he had the opportunity in the 2017  tests - matter of fact he was totally out of depth.

In any event the above evaluation was not based on one match - but the series of matches played. If you look at one test only - look at the Reds game in Round 11 and that is why Dreyer should never be anywhere near the Springbok team.

Yes I know you think Dreyer's useless ... you've made that clear enough ... and then you came up with Tank Du Toit as our go to starting tighthead. ... which you've moved away from now.

We all heard how poor a season Louw was having and Dreyer was simply useless ... so in came the "incredible" Tank Du Toit ... lol!! Probably based on an article you read somewhere ... or some random stats you looked at.

Jesse Kriel went the same way. You were prepared to go to war on his behalf at one stage ... now not so much. WTF?? Now suddenly we have "issues at 13" ...

It seems as if your not sure of anything these days. Most of your posts end up making you look like a tottie, Tokkie.

One cannot take you seriously.

You base most of your nonsense on unreliable stats. One week the man's stats are good and so you support him ... the next week his stats are poor and so you drop him. Haaaaaaaaaahahahaha!!

You really are about as pathetic as they come.

CC, I also think Dreyer is probably one of the worst tightheads in the competition...but Kitshoff and Beast are both decent loose heads, so either I'm wrong about Dreyer or I've missed something.

I make it my duty to watch every game and the opinions are based om fact, I must admit I laso look at stats to determine whether my original viewing is more or less correct.

However, in this case I looked at the rating of players  by Foxsport and of particular importance the Sanzaar teams of the week as determined on a scientific basis.

The players I mentioned all featured prominently in all those forums.

Kriel does not feature in that case - so I left him out.    Dreyer and Louw are not rated either.

The player you dislike so badly - De Allende - is one of the top three centers in the competition.   I know what I am looking for and am sure that all those players I mentioned will be in the Erasmus squad and as the first choices for the respective positions.

Well Draad ... if you are happy with our "worst" tighthead destroying our two "best" looseheads then that's on you. You've joined Mike and the millions of others in this country that support sub-standard performances and mediocrity. It's the new black, didn't you know?

Welcome.

I noticed that many like to use the word "decent" when describing a dead average player. They never use the word "decent" when describing a guy like Bryan Habana ... or Os Du Randt ... or Dan Carter ... or Joost vd Westhuizen ... or Sergio Parisse.

The word "decent" is strictly reserved for those who will never amount to much more than the average Joe ... so yes ... I agree with you ... both Kitshoff and Beast are fairly "decent" players. I wouldn't exchange any of my Lions loosehead props for either of them though.

Mike ... just because you make it your mission to watch every match. does not mean that you understand what you're looking at ... and even less so, what you're talking about.

Give me a break.

I can watch every BokDrol Spitting competition on the planet and still walk away clueless as to the technique used, the strategy employed and the gameplan put together prior to the event.

I can do this and then go join some MB, and do my damndest to impress everyone there, and have them believe that I am the most knowledgeable BokDrol Spitting expert on the forum ... that is until I open my ignorant mouth, and expose myself as a clueless wannabe ... much like you, Mike.

You are not the resident expert. Not by a long shot. Your many ... many ... MANY post have exposed you as an ignorant man that gets something right once in awhile.

You are clueless to the simple basics of rugby .

Sorry ... but that is a fact.

Funny thread. Let me just provide a little clarity. CC makes a good point, Dreyer's besting of Kitshoff was a bit of a shock. That was supposed to be the Lions' Achilles heel. Kitshoff's ratings come from general play....in the scrums he is not doing the business, breaking even at best. There is massive consensus around Kitshoff, he looks the part.....but is he a destructive scrummager? At tighthead there is just Wilco. Dreyer and Thomas have matches where they look like the have it sorted....but then they face a different loosehead, different angles of attack, and the issues reemerge. Koch was the same...an accident waiting to happen For years Tokkie has supported the belly diving, constantly injured Malherbe.....no answers there. We need to find a back up tighthead. But if we want our scrum to really be a weapon, the loosehead has to be able to destabilize the opponent. Is Kitshoff that scrummager....there has to be a measure of doubt.

Where does Goboko fit into all this?

Butter fingers this weekend but damn he looks strong. Have to give it Nyakanye also. Guy played his heart out thi s past weekend.

Both of color neither bad shouts in my book.

The issue about the props will be dealt with after this weekend/   Maybe you have missed out on the Reds game where the Lions props were under serious pressure and showed zero.   The two props were penalized 3 times for scrumming (Van Rooyen 1 - Dreyer 2)

Remember - that was against the REDS for heavens sake.   They have no props that will make it into the Aussie side -  that guy J-P Smith is a South African - who is normally the back-up prop for the Reds amd he scrummed better than Dreyer did.   Smith was the Sanzaar no 1 in the official Sanzaar Team of the Week and he scrummed Dreyer into oblivion.

What will happen if Dreyer comes up against a test prop?   The same as last year I am afraid.

May I add  that story about the Lions - Stormers game is BS as per normal.  The player who caused scrumming problems was Louw - he copped two penalties for poor scrumming.   So you mixed up the story to fit your copy-book.   I like Louw - but in recent games he showed a decline in scrumming performance - probably due to over-play - so that does not mean that the data on him is accurate - but I nonetheless left him out of the calculation.

Mozart

You can lie as many times as you like about Malherbe - and it would not have  any factual effect.   Fact is Malherbe has not played any Super Rugby this year - so he is not showing anything in the ratings of any institution.

It is normal with you to lei and distort about your pet hates - so I do not believe that you can ever be honest about player performance assessments.

You can't plan around players that are constantly injured....like Malherbe. Hell even when he is there, he is all but useless.

I also think Goboko looks promising....needs to improve his handling as you say Prune.....but he has the explosiveness Kitshoff seems to lack. Nyakane may be fitter, but he isn't suddenly going to become a dominant prop.

Nobody could be as foolish as Meyer was in selecting the 2015 WC squad - he had to work with the hospital staff  to get permission to empty the hospital wards the way he picked players.   And you supported him all out in the case of those players.

So no suggestions on Malherbe at this stage,
