Inverse relationship between performance and youth

Saw this remark on another thread;

Hanson has capped 26 players since he took over. Oldest new cap - 29. Youngest new cap - 21. Average age of new caps - 24.3 years. All are current ages and not age when capped.

HM capped 30 players since he took over. Oldest new cap - 29. Youngest new cap - 20. Average age of new caps - 24 years. All are current ages and not age when capped.

Just a question.  Why current ages and nto ages when they were originally capped?
Most of Meyer's caps happened in 2012 - when there was a large number of Bulls players capped - who vanished from the scene altogether - and in the game against Scotland this year.   A more realistic assessment would appear to be to look at the players who was capped in 2012 and is still a consideration at present.   Those would exclude some of the players who were mostly on the bench and flopped badly eg Werner Kruger and Dean Greyling.
However, the real question should not be around the ages of players - rather how they perform as  Springboks - te emphasis should be on performance not age and reputation.      

 I was just not keen to start working that out as well. Do it yourself if you are so interested.

The "lot of new caps in 2012" had nothing to do with the Bulls. Most would know the obvious reasons but for the feeble minded like yourself, I will try to explain why most of his new caps happened in 2012.

Immediately after the 2011 RWC, the following retired or moved on from Bok rugby (some temporarily, though):
John Smit
Victor Matfield
Bakkies Botha
Danie Rossouw
Fourie du Preez
Jaque Fourie
Gurthro Steenkamp
Johan Muller
Butch James
CJ Vd Linde

In addition, Andries Bekker got injured in 2012 and then moved to Japan, Schalk Burger and Duane Vermeulen got injured.

That is 12 regular Boks that needed to be replaced immediately as well as Bekker later during 2012.

I was quite civil today - but you want to get it in the neck.   Lets get this straight - I accepted that there was a long list of largely overdue departures who had to be replaced - and in that case you have to bear in mind Meyer's own comment at the end of the 2012 season - namely that he did select players h was familiar with and those players were basically from the Bulls team.   During 2012 14 players from the Bulls franchise was selected to play for the Springboks in either the starting lineup or the bench.   Most were abject falures and never re-appeared in the later Springbok squads.  The biggest failure in 2012 was Morne Steyn - he was dropped and re-appeared in 2013 where he failed again - and the same in 2014.   Some people just never learn.     

 So when have to be civil when it suits you, don't we. Other times you are quite happy to call me a c*nt.

So what if 14 players from the Bulls have been selected? I don't why you love to keep on hearing the same thing over and over again. HM literally had a week or two to get his team in order before the start of the series against England. I don't even knwo why I bother because you have already forgotten what the entire issue was. Best you start at the top of this thread again and read it carefully. It is not about The Bulls or 2012 or Morne Steyn or Frans Steyn or Willem Alberts or whatever other pet-hate you are still planning to bring into this argument. It is all about the differences/similarities between age/experience and youth. Maybe it was the fact that I did not even bother to bring in the Aussies that baffled you and got you side-tracked.

You are correct. Some people, starting with yourself, just never learn.

Seems the point that the team brimming with youth bombed big time and lost the deal mentally,  is being ignored. But it is relevant.

You want me to list the 14 Bulls players Meyer selected for the Springboks in 2012 - so lets start - whether int eh starting line up or on the bench:-
Kirchner, Basson, JJ Engelbrecht, Wynand Olivier, Morne Steyn, Hougaard, Spies, Flip van der Merwe, Juandre kruger, Werner Kruger, Dean Greyling, Jacques Potgieter,  Ralepelle, Vermaak.

To just list the number of new players with their ages is not the answer to the issue and is actually very superfcial.   What is essential is to list the actual performances in games between the experienced players and the new players.    That is a scientificway to go about it.   RThat is a wide nough range to deal with issues.   
Matteris i 2012 Meyer selected  new players - but how many experienced players were in his squad.   He started off with a long list of players - for the reasons rightly pointed out by you - but that list was reduced in 2013 and 2014 - bar for the Scotish test in 2014.
However, even that is not really the issue.   People are besotted by the issue of age (which some couple to experiencee) but the real issue is how players perform irrespective of age and experience.   Where experienced players flop - nothing is said aboutit - when younger players flop this board is covered by some members who who refuses to adjust their thinking on players.  According to them a top performer in 2007 - will still eb a top performer in 2014.   There is no proper evaluation of the soc-alled experienced players done to see whether they still is of value to the team.   That remains the problem with the reasoning of msome members on the Board.   I do not rush in with a long litst of younger players to be selected - like Dave does - but I also relaize that renewal is necessary and that some experienced players  are not delivering the goods.
