In a twist of fate following their United Rugby Championship triumph, Ireland's rugby landscape has been reshaped due to injuries to key players. Captain Caelan Doris and winger Tommy O’Brien, pivotal in their team's recent successes, have been sidelined from the upcoming Nations Championship Southern Series. This development has necessitated some unexpected adjustments to the squad set to tour Australia, Japan, and New Zealand this July.
The incident unfolded dramatically during the URC final against the Bulls, where Doris was forced off the pitch only six minutes into the game due to a foot injury, later confirmed to be serious. O’Brien, too, suffered a setback with an ankle injury after an awkward landing while contesting a kick, culminating in his substitution by Garry Ringrose just before the break. These injuries have not only deprived Ireland of two of their stalwarts but have also led to the inclusion of Ulster’s uncapped Bryn Ward and Zac Ward in the touring squad.
The Irish Rugby Football Union stated, “The Ireland squad will depart for Sydney on Monday ahead of the Nations Championship Southern Series. Captain Caelan Doris (foot) and Tommy O’Brien (groin) have been ruled out of the matches against Australia (Saturday, 4 July), Japan (Saturday, 11 July) and New Zealand (Saturday, 18 July). They have been replaced by Ulster’s uncapped duo Bryn Ward and Zac Ward.” In light of Doris' absence, Leinster hooker Dan Sheehan will assume leadership for the tour.
"Delighted for the group, the lads leaving, but also for the coaching staff,"
Doris expressed on the Leinster website. His commendation didn’t end there; he highlighted the exceptional performances of his teammates,"I think some of our backs stepped up massively, like Hugo [Keenan] and Sammy [Prendergast], probably are the two at the forefront of that. I thought they were class today."
Despite his inability to join the field this summer, Doris remains a central figure off it, embodying the spirit and resilience of Irish rugby. His leadership and morale will undoubtedly continue to influence his team as they face the challenges of the Nations Championship without him. The inclusion of new faces like the Ward duo provides a fresh opportunity for emerging talents to shine on an international stage, ensuring that the spirit of competition and the quest for excellence in Irish rugby endures.
As Ireland gears up for this pivotal tour, the blend of seasoned players and new blood promises an intriguing chapter in their storied rugby history. With the eyes of their biggest fan, Caelan Doris, watching over them, the Irish team is set to tackle the upcoming challenges with the same fervor and determination that brought them their recent URC victory.
