Is Coetzee on the point of being fired?

After the Irish disaster an opinion poll indicated that 82% of the respondents indicated he should be fired forthwith. with 13% indicated that he should be fired after the end of the present tour.
Discussion on eNCA indicated that the experts consulted express a clear opinion that Coetzee insisted on selection of players who are not up to standard and leaving out more capable players.
Despite years of poor selections at the Stormers and a history of clear evidence of incompetence insofar as backline  play is concerned Coetzee was appointed despite serious reservations about his competence and approach.  
The only thing that can save him at this stage would be interference by the ANC - but the party is in serious trouble internally and may have no stomach to interfere  at this stage.         

 Replacing the coach is not your only problem. Your player pool is also a problem. The current Bok side is like scrapping the barrel of the remaining players you have. All your best players are in Europe. And they well prob only come back around the world cup. Maybe not but not any time soon. If ever.

Indeed there are a bunch of SA players with both skill and experience playing abroad. Obviously trying to surmise their potential benefit or rather SA's loss, is an abstract task. Suffice to say the cons vastly outweigh the single pro. That being inside info on Euro refs and NH tactics. 
Watched some old Bok games over the last few weeks...I'm talking 20 year old games. And it just appears as though players were less bulky but more intelligent, man for man. Making good decisions seemed to trump perfect technique or size. They also seemed to link up a lot better and knew when to push and when to proceed with caution. Like they were doing that mythical thing spoken of in hushed terms...Thinking for themselves.
I wondered if it wasn't simply a generational thing. If guys getting into provincial teams now days are not selected from a smaller base of interested school kids. Possibly down to the massive level of distraction kids have available to them presently. All the way from new sports to urban sports and everything that technology has brought with it. 
There has to be some reason right? I mean, for me anyway, there is a clear difference in smarts between the players of the last generation and the present. 
Size, speed, ball handling etc etc can all be coached. But genius cannot. For me, it's that spark, understanding, ability to predict, to read and to compensate that separate those who are remembered from those who aren't.
A coach who demands a player like Jantjies to play a strictly kicking game probably also call his plumber to fix your tv. I don't think Jantjies is a genius but I do think that a coach should do his absolute best in getting out of the way and allowing a player to do what he does best. You can't create intelligence but you surely can stifle it. And that, is for me where both HM and Coetzee have failed abysmally.
There are presently players in SA who are smart and who are able to match any other nation's best in terms of intelligence and skill, but they are not being picked and when they  do its generally to either play them out of position and/or to make them play in a different way to what warranted their call up.
So I disagree with the you in the "scraping the barrel" bit of what you said. 
Kwagga, Whitely, Kolisi, Willemse, all three du Preez brothers, Marx, Am, the Shark skipper(i forget his name), Nkosi, JSVR, Kriel, Kitshoff, Pollard, Jantjies(to a degree), Faf, Combrink, Specman...All clever players, and there are more.
Now compare that to...De Allende, Jessie Kriel, Lood, Beast, Coenie, Kasim, Paige, Rhule, Strauss
Let's for the sake of comparison use Strauss and Marx. Is Strauss stronger than Marx? NO, certainly not. Does Strauss have more experience? Obviously he does. So, how does a guy fresh out of school compile a highlight reel in one match that out does that of his more experienced counterpart's entire career? Through strength alone? 
Nope, through having a brain! Through understanding timing, seeing space  and commanding a certain amount of freedom of play. Call it  being able to read the game or whatever else you like but it comes down to guile and intelligence which when you don't steal the show might often go unnoticed. But it matters.
For me, our coaches have been undermining our players natural ability for much too long and have not been able to take our best and bring the best out of them. Had we coaches that could do that, we'd all be singing a totally different song about SA rugby today.
He'll, it seems like our rugby is better off when the team is left to coach itself...Say what you want about PDivvy, but at least he knew his limitations and put faith in the right players.

A really good response.  I am with you about all the things you wrote above, but wish to add some thoughts on the issue of thinking players with ball sense.   Meyer was dead set about a game plan he devised in 2004 and tried to apply in 2015.   It was a disaster and one element was that it eliminated the backline insofar as most aspects of backline play is concerned.
The above made it possible for Meyer to play players out of position in the backline without any restrictions on performance.   As long as they could defend that was the only requirement he regards as important.   Coetzee followed that up with an equal sense of idiocy - bar for the fact that he disregarded the defense requirement completely.
Insofar as the thinking players category is concerned I would add Schickerling to your list of players,  
There is one thing that baffles me and that is the quota story.   I would say players like Nkosi, Mapimpi and Papier to my mind merit selection on the basis of all aspects of performance = what the hell is Leyds, Rhule and Skosan doing in the squad?  The same applies to Ralepelle and Mbonambi - where the obvious player should be Marutlule,   This is my problem with the quota system - it favours duds above performers.
Incidentally I have seen very little to suggest that Am needs to be in the squad.   He was good early In the Super Rugby series and vanish from sight when up against stronger teams.

Here is my response to some of the statements. 
- Yes AC should be fired Immediately and have Rassie Parachute in as he is available. Even the Barbarians coach with less time can create a better game plan than what AC has done over the last 2 years. Don't forget that the current Baa Baas was packed with fringe, Ausie, Kiwi and SA players. 
- Player Pool, I agree that some our best players are abroad. This is probably the only time I would give PDV and credit and that was that he was able to persuade players to come home and give up lucrative contracts in France. Players want assurance, Reinach would have stayed and so would Serfontein if the new their role in the system. 
- Our Super Rugby coaches are way below standard, there was only one significant coach super rugby level and that Ackerman. At least we will have John Mitchell. Don't forget the value somebody like Joe Schmidt added to Leinster and now Ireland. 
- Match tactics and player preparation - somebody mentioned that the Irish and New Zealand operate like a Roman Legion. They know exactly what system the players should fit into, so when the have injuries the next players slots in without to much disruption. But the boks are playing like a bunch of individuals. 
- Player development - Some podcast and ireland again, But apparently Joe Schmidt spends extra time late at night with Connor Murrey practicing box kicks. He takes out a stop watch and put some distance markers out. Apparently one of the star Irish provincial players got sent home from camp because they knew what they had to do but simply could meet the targets. 
- Loyal to a fault - like Meyer, Coetzee seems to gravitate towards his stormers players that has not achieved anything over the last 3 seasons. Doesn't matter how world class the player is. You should never keep them out of matches and assume that 3 months at training allow them to start. The tour squad has been poorly managed. How many times have we seen player like Nyakane and Chilli Boy carry bags and then don't get any game time for 8 weeks, but then a key player gets injured and the get leaped frogged from another player. Don't get me wrong, at some point in time and maybe in the future they will earn their selection but it simply doesn't help. The Same go for Dan Du Preez. He has been with the boks for 3 months now, but never got a chance to run of the bench. 
Super Rugby and Pro 12 Squads - I don't think it is necessarily provincial unions or the players fault here. Yes, we do need more seasoned campaigners and not these kids running around, but SA rugby only contracts 12 or 14 Springboks, these players are free to go play abroad. Whereas in England that has the same demand on national players and only pay match fees and not even contracts keep the players in England by forming and Elite Squad of 45. Players get invited to camps etc. So you don't need to have central contracts but at least have a transparent system and help the players development. 
So, yes, Coetzee, Smith and Venter are all duds that like to sit in a room and wet dreams about what could be rather than staying humble and never get comfortable

@Mike. Dunno mate, I think Am has the goods. Only time will tell. I know the entire country is waiting for Galant to have his shot. I think he's gonna explode under Mitchell next year. Rob Du Preez is in my top spot for 10 atm. Guy just looks so calm always and has some tricks too. Kind of the best of Jantjies and Pollard. 
Actually on Rob Du Preez. Next season at the Sharks is gonna be very interesting. His dad obviously knows his game very well and it's one of next season's most anticipated sub-plots for me. Seeing what performances his dad can extract from him.
As far as HM goes, I think you and I have been on the same page since day 1.

Was reading the news this morning and clicked on some article about Eddie Jones apologising for swearing in the coaches box. Not that I care. Actually I want a coach to be emotionally invested. That was probably HM's best attribute haha.
Later on in the article Jones is quoted as saying..."The team didn't play well enough because I didn't coach them well enough and I take full responsibility for that."
Compare that to Coetzee's "We as a team take full responsibility."
Not once since Coetzee's disgraceful tenure began have i heard him shoulder the blame himself. When he is not making some excuse about something the best you will get from him is an admission of guilt as part of the collective.
People say he is a nice guy. Some guys are nice guys because they are too cowardly to be who they really are. 
It takes a man to own up to a mistake and a true leader will never blame his charges because he sees everything they do as an extension of himself. That's the leader you trust. That's the leader you'll die for. 
Coetzee could not be further from that if he tried.
