We've had this conversation a couple times about how good coaches are and whether they still coach even though they have had great success in the past.
I remember seeing Bob Dwyer in the stands many years ago and it wasn't long ago that he actually won the rugby World Cup for Australia, but things soon started to unravel and he then gave up on coaching. He is probably one of their top coaches of all times. But he realised when time was up and that his coaching style were becoming out dated.
We have 3 coaches today that had some success in Gatland, Jones and White. Two are still on the international scene and Jake is hanging in there.
All of them are now in their 60s. Gatlands return to Wales has been a complete disaster thus far. Jones managed to redeem himself and turned England into the number one team. Things started to fall apart after the 2019 world cup. He kept pushing players even harder and the results started hit him. He then jumped ship to Australia and that was another disaster in the making. What was poor of him was that he promised that he would turn Australia around but not even being 3 months into his new job already made a deal with Japan.
Gatland had great success with Wales and led to a semi and quarter final. Both times being knocked out by SA. He was also the coach of the Lions team and got some success against New Zealand which is probably his greatest achievement. However, it was no the same against the boks.
He left Wales and decided to coach the chiefs where they lost all 13 games under him in the super rugby.
He returned back to Wales but is yet to make a difference.
Jake became a journeyman and was able to apply structure to struggling teams and ensured they got into the top 4, but for some reason he always falls out with administrators, players and fans. He is now in his 4th season at the bulls and have not set the world alight.
My question, should these coaches still be coaching or are they better to serve as a Director of rugby or just be at a union where they can impart their knowledge on to other coaches.
I think it is time for them to hang up their clip board and give other coaches a crack.
