People always talk about Goosen being injury prone - but what about Francois Steyn?

Francois Steyn came back from France in April/May 2012 and played two games for the Sharks in Super 15.  That was followed  up by Four games in the RC and he then had an ankle injury that kept him out of the game for six months.

He was not in top physical form on his return from France.   He seemed to be overweight and slow in pace.   Was that the reason for the ankle injury?

On his return to Super 15 in 2013 - he was reportedly weighing 118 kgs and put on a special programme to get back to a reasonable weight and to pick up on his mobility.   It did not work out and after 4 matches (two of which he was benched fairly early) he was dropped from the starting line - up.   Then he came on from the bench in two games and played for about 10 to 15 minutes in each.   Thereafter he played one full match and suffered compartment pressure in the second game - result he was out of rugby for 6 months.

He returned to play in the CC - but played only in 2 games - ne from the bench.

Since Steyn's return from France he has only played in the equivalent of 14 rugby games.   He was absent through injury for about half the fames played in the nearly 2 years after his return.   He is injured again - not a good sign for the upcoming Super 15 season.

Frequent serious injuries can  occur in respect of all players.   However, when a player has serious injuries of the magnitude in evidence here there may be grounds to question why they do occur - and the one question remains - is the guy really match fit?

An ankle injury is a niggly injury, one that can persist if not treated properly - I can attest to that! Comparing him to Goosen is rather whimsical given the differences between the two; Frans being an archetypal mesomorph, the latter being anything but! Yes, Frans was overweight, and that may very well have compounded his injury. As per speed? He is no slower than the other top 12s in the world, he doesn't appear to lack mobility given he beats his defenders routinely and it's of the utmost importance that the Sharks get him back into top condition - imagine improving on last years showings? Now that's a mouth watering prospect.

Poor Goosen on the other hand has a slight frame, long stringy muscle and caught in a sport where contact is brutal. His injuries are the result of a body not meant for contact sport being subjected to it.

 Sun Tzu

Goosen is a slighter built person - and he was very young when he started to play Super 15 rugby - maybe too young.

Syeun on his return from France was OBESE and very SLOW - those are facts of life,  He was clearly overweight and that is a fact of life.   He was worse after his ankle injury.  Be it as it may ankle injuries are frequent - but much more frequent in the case of obese persons.

The question is - what caused the compartment pressure injury .   Why deal extensively with Goosen and not the fat and slow Steyn?   Goosen had a shoulder injury and a knee  injury - Steyn is a different kettle of fish.   Is his legs giving problems because of the extra weight it has to carry.
