We hear much talk from the Kiwi's about how their ITM cup is far superior to the Currie cup and is the best domestic/provincial rugby competition in the world but much like the take on their school boy rugby, I believe this is bullshit.

In two weeks of Currie Cup rugby, we are yet to see a team win by more than 10 points. Sharks beating the Lions on Friday night by 8 points is the biggest margin in 5 games so far. We have seen a 1 pointer, 2 pointer and a draw on the first weekend to go with an 8 pointer and 6 pointer so far this weekend. This looks to be a real strength on strength, edge of your seat stuff.

Now lets look at the ITM cup. Taranaki, whom successfully defended the Ranfurly shield for a big part of last season were smacked 30-9 by Canterbury and Counties Manukau, who achieved promotion this year were absolutely outplayed by Wellington 55-19.

This seems like a case of some serious below par teams and massive mismatches, much like we would see in the Currie cup if we had to let our minnows like Border, EP, Griffons, Valke, SWD, Pumas and Boland in. Sure NZL has more teams competing but are they really competitive or are they fooling themselves?

Their advert for school boy rugby on TV mentions the competiton being the superior school boy comp in the world. Once again, being a man who has lived in both countries and seen what both have to offer, I fail to see how this can be true. With schools like Affies, Grey Bloem and co, I dont think the kiwi schools can claim this. That Sanix schools comp is not a true reflection as every year SA send a school that is not the champion team in SA. We dont have a competition to decide who is our champ. NZL has some good rugby playing schools but none more superior than SA's best. I would love to see SA's top 3 vs Nzl's top 3 in a all SA play all NZ competition.

@boklogic,

"We hear much talk from the Kiwi's about how their ITM cup is far superior to the Currie cup and is the best domestic/provincial rugby competition in the world but much like the take on their school boy rugby, I believe this is bullshit."
well now, u have sparked my interest with ur thread and opening paragraph.
i consider myself a regular here in sarugby.com, so im surprised that i havent once come across any kiwis saying the ITM is superior to the CC, but then again i havent read every post or thread here.
would u be so kind as to copy paste some of the comments these kiwis have been making which is obviously why u started this thread, seeing as how there are many, at least 3 copy pasted comments would be more then sufficient.

Sas, no need to post comments. Just watch tv. Your advert for the game on tv mentions it being the superior and toughest provincial comp in the world. Well over the weekend, the Currie cup saw another 1 pointer.

For school rugby, the advert mentions it being the superior school comp in the world. You cant tell me you have not seen these ads before. They are on all the time when they are promoting the up coming games.

@boklogic,

i see, so ur comments was another sione laukais uncle moment, o_O
i have seen the ITM ads, and it does infer that its the toughest provincial comp in the world, but thats not what u said originally, ur comment was,,,

"We hear much talk from the Kiwi's about how their ITM cup is far superior to the Currie cup and is the best domestic/provincial rugby competition"
u ambiguously imply that kiwi folks here are the ones saying that comment for Lord knows why, and thats why i asked u for the posts which have been confirmed never existed

but u must be a noob of some magnitude, cos when it comes to advertising, it is standard practice for anyone to claim their product is No1, its as common to anyone as kicking a rugby ball is to saffas, :oP
ever hear pepsi say coke is the best??? nope of course not, they would NEVER mention coke in their ads, just like the ITM dont mention the CC in their promtions.
unless u watched a completely differnt ad to me ???

"Now lets look at the ITM cup. Taranaki, whom successfully defended the Ranfurly shield for a big part of last season were smacked 30-9 by Canterbury and Counties Manukau, who achieved promotion this year were absolutely outplayed by Wellington 55-19."
ive proven many times that ur knowledge on NZ rugby is very very poor, and i think the lack of success that SA have had against NZ in all the top levels of the game has made u rather bitter about anything NZ rugby, cos u dont seem to be able to objectively make rational comments on a matter which seems to rile u up, i dont blame u, if the All Blacks, NZ 7s team and our spXV had SA track record, i would prob be the same,,,,,,,,well prob not, lmao, :oD

but lets break down these games and ur poor simplistic analysis, did u even see the welington team??? it was the pretty much the hurricanes team and the players that were away on All Black duties had their spots filled in by highlanders players.
the wellington forward pack was the hurricanes forward pack (including All Blacks dane coles and vito) bar the openside flanker and the backs had three hurricane players and two highlanders, this team could have easily competed against most spXV teams, dont forget how easily the canes beat the cheetahs.

counties like u said was recently promoted to ITMs premiership division, but they are the currie cups version of the pumas, while the crusaders are the CC equivalent of the sharks, if the sharks had won the 2012 CC.
what u dont mention is that counties put up a good scrap, the score was 15-6 at half time and this was despite canterbury having the superior team.
canterbury were deserved winners, but the match was a lot closer then the scorline suggested and credit to counties cos they will be better of for it, something that u would have know had u watched it, and if u say otherwise, i wont be able to help myslef but remember the siones uncle incident.

"This seems like a case of some serious below par teams and massive mismatches, much like we would see in the Currie cup if we had to let our minnows like Border, EP, Griffons, Valke, SWD, Pumas and Boland in. Sure NZL has more teams competing but are they really competitive or are they fooling themselves?"
again the lack of understanding u have with NZ rugby is very evident.
ITM is split into divisions like the currie cup, the premiership divison is the equivalent of SARUs premier division, and the championship division aka in SA as the first divison of which are both their respective nations bottom tiers.

in the ITM the top 7 teams participate in the premiership division
wellington
canterbury
auckland
waikato
taranaki
bay of plenty
counties manakau
and the next 7 participate in the ITM 2nd tier known as the championship division,,,
hawkes bay
otago
north harbour
northland
southland
manawatu
tasman
while in the CC only the top 6 are in the premier division and the next 8 are in the ist division.

the next is very important for u to read.
both the ITM and the CC have relegation and promotional rules between the two leagues, but unlike CC, the ITM is automatic, meaning if u finish last in the premiership u are automatically relegated to the championship and vice versa for the winner of the championship.
in the CC, the woodenspoon of the premiership and the winner of the 1st division go play each other for the right to compete in the premiership division.

so no boklogic, u saying the
"Currie cup if we had to let our minnows like Border, EP, Griffons, Valke, SWD, Pumas and Boland in."
the closest hypothetical comparison would be if the EP kings were already part of the CC but were relegated in at the end of 2012 for the pumas who were promoted with no relegation/promotion qualifying match.
that is the only way the two comps would be the same.

u also conveniently left out that waikato beat northland 31-29, auckland beat north harbour 27-20 and otago beat bay of plenty 32-29. that would be the CC equivalent of the lions beating leopards 31-29, WP beating border 27-20 and otago beating the cheetahs.

to make comparisons is stupid for many reasons, i mean it was rnd 1 of the ITM FFS and u were already jumping of ur shoes cos of a few blow out scores especially the little rant on tarankai??? o_O
did any of the top teams in the CC ever get a whipping in a blowout score last year??? i seem to recall the bulls getting thumped by WP 40 odd points.

the reason i knew ur argument was full of kak to begin with is cos its widely known amongst all the experts in NZ rugby that the ITM is inferior to the CC.
to SARUs credit, they have tried to maintain the top level creditability of the CC which is why its not uncommon to see Bok players playing in the CC after their Bok duties.
the clubs also have a financial stake in the CC, while the ITM provinces function with one dominant thought in mind and that is keeping the players production factory ticking along while maintains some semblance of a profit.

in short, the ITM is inferior to the CC, SARU put a lot of effort to maintain the CC reputation, while the NZRU had easily made the choice of investing all of its efforts into the natonal teams and spXV franchises, while the ITM and others gets what left.

i dont about the top 3 teams playing each other either, personally i wouldnt have a problem, cos theres nothing to suggest that a CC vs ITM wouldnt go the way of NZ like everything else does, but i couldnt be stuffed hearing another bellyaching piss poor excuses from why SA teams arent preforming, just like we have all year in the spXV.

Something you would have noticed, had you watched it, was that Counties didn't play Canterbury. Counties played Wellington. Canterbury played Taranaki. No one cares how close it is at half time. Rugby is not 40 mins long. In SA, we are seeing 1 pointers and hard fought out games. Here are your first 3 results of the ITM cup:

15 Aug

Counties Manukau v Wellington

Pukekohe

7:35 pm

16-55

 16 Aug

Canterbury v Taranaki

Christchurch

7:35 pm

30-6

 17 Aug

Hawke's Bay v Manawatu

Napier

2:35 pm

45-18

Hardly any fair match ups there hey sas.

I am not interested in your reasons for mismatches. If we let Griffons and the rest in, we could call it the ITM cup too but we dont. NZL choose to do that, that is their problem

Sas, dont feel you need to make excuses for your "self-important" countrymen and bring in pepsi and coke and other shit. You guys should look into things a bit before making statements even if it is for advertising only. Can some Nigerian airline claim to be the best in the world to get people to fly? Can Francois Botha claim he is the best boxer in the world so as to get more interest in his fights?? Can the Black Caps claim they are the number 1 cricket team in the world because their rugby team is?

ps. Sas, we not worried about your super rugby teams. Kiwi's travel to the republic, 2 games and they out. SA is on the road for 5 weeks and 4 games. Dont worry how easily the Hurricanes beat the Cheetahs. Just worry how comfortably the Bulls returned the favour.

So, in summary, you saying that you Kiwi's dont say that their comp/s are superior to the rest of the world?? Then you back track and tell us that its all part of a "marketing" strategy but you maintain that you guys dont say it or think it?? Which one is it SAS? Forget all your analyzing of comments as you do and just answer the question. We just talking you big guy. You not in any trouble ;-)

Look him up, give him a call and I am sure he will show you what he showed me. Ha ha I am sure if I was going to lie about meeting some half baked ex rugby players family member, I would have spun some shit about someone a little more "famous" than Sione Lauaki dont you reckon??

Sheesh SmallCock.  All Sasu asked was for you to back up your claim that lots of Kiwis are touting the ITM as the toughest provincial rugby comp in the world and so far all you've provided as proof is hyperbole from an advertising campaign. The way you represented the issue I would have thought that you'd have ample evidence.

If you are such good mates with Lauakis uncle (pfffft) why don't you encourage him to write an affidavit and let the proper authorities handle the matter.  I would have thought proving the great NZ steroid problem would have been a worthy endeavour for such a vitriolic keewee hater like yourself. Shit, I'm sure wannabean and redneck would even help to pay for your troubles if money's a problem.

"Ha ha I am sure if I was going to lie about meeting some half baked ex rugby players family member, I would have spun some shit about someone a little more "famous" than Sione Lauaki dont you reckon?"

Not really, Smallcock, the more obscure the player and the more tenuous the link then the harder it is for anyone to verify your laughable claims. In any event, you're known in these parts as a serial liar so I dont think anyone is surprised when you name-drop in a pathetic attempt to try and make yourself appear interesting or important. It's like all your bluster about what a tough guy you are when we all know you're a weedy zit-popping little stick-insect who ducked the challenge of actually meeting a fellow poster.

Oh and Smallcock, my brother-in-law's second cousin knows a guy whose uncle once dreamed he met a guy who knew the hairdresser of one of the Currie Cup players who said it wasn't that tough . . . not as tough as the TV ads anyway!

Nuke: You kiwi's are so up yourselves when it comes to rugby that I hardly need to get proof from each individual kiwi who believes that. Your tv adverts speak for the nation brother.

Rooipoes: Shame..Still feel the need to yap at my heels. Cute. You wanted Sione's uncles name, I gave it to you. You wanted proof I was at "my meeting" at the petrol station, I gave it to you. Didnt hear another word from the no show..Anything else I can give you proof on?

Ps..Love your take on how to "get away with lying" and obscurity and the rest. You seem way too versed in all this lying and pretending. You probably the type of guy that has many different log on details because you put your foot in it everywhere u go..Oh wait, that has been confirmed.. Ha ha please rooi, spare calling anyone else pathetic old man

Boklogic I suppose the only fair way you could compare the 2 competitions is if you had a group of players who have played in both competions and they make a detailed analysis. The other way you could look at it is the ITM cup is a prepatory comp. for players to Super and international rugby, so the dominant international team must have the dominant comp. Either way its all subjective depending on where your loyalties lie.

For crying out loud SmallCock!  Noone is suggesting you take a statement from every rugby fan in NZ, just a few c & p's of some pertinent examples to illustrate and support your claim. All you've done is turn a reasonable request into an impossible crusade and somehow use the inability to carry out the impossible crusade  as irrefutable evidence of your ridiculous allegations. That's some warped logic there boetjie.

Your faith in the merits of the outrageous claims made by advertising executives who are doing their very best to promote a  product is also a little unnerving. Don't tell me you also believe that NZ really is 100% pure or that Redbull gives you wings?  If, you are savvy enough to recognise these claims for the spin doctoring they really are, why can you not apply the same common sense LOGIC to the ITM Cup advertising campaign designed to drum up parochial support and pride in a domestic product?  I'm trying to appeal to your ability to reason here but I sus

Brainfreekiwi - Redbull gives you wings is their slogan. Nowhere do they compare it to anything else in the world. Spot the difference. Your school comp and ITM cup can have any slogan they want but they cant claim it is the best or superior comps in the world.

We never know what to believe from you kiwi's because you also believe your refs ar 100% pure and competent but the rest of the world will tell you otherwise. If you want to drum up support in your country, then do something like the Varsity cup in SA did (Varsity cup-"Rugby that Rocks") You know, there are other ways to advertise and make it interesting without being up yourselves and lying to the public dont you think? You dont see America advertising their athletic events with having the best 100m sprinter in the world when Bolt is around.. You get the picture now?

Poly: The ITM cup teams may very well beat the currie cup teams but its the "most superior and toughest comp in the world" bit that is confusing. Until proven, that should not be said.

Nuke: You mention Redneck helping me out with money if its an issue for me. Any chance you can get him to save his money and come over to NZL so I can put paid to his ideas that I have lied about anything? Throw Clean Cut in there too so he can come and see if I know my shit in the gym or not. Rooinek may be able to see that the pimply face little boy that is naked with a small cock that he dreams about is in fact a man much larger than he. I can take him onsite to meet Sione's uncle as well. No problems.

If he has the money and brings his wife over too, I can put that issue "to bed" as well. She may only need a 1 way ticket ;-) No leaving this "small cock" ;-)

To clean cut and Rooi, biggest mouths on here, less talk, lets start proving some shit now. Its easy to have a lot to say over the net but you want proof, I am good with that. Send me a pic of you boys so we can see who we dealing with here and who has lied about anything. I will show you the pimply face boy that has no idea about gym programmes that you so badly want me to be.

Boklogic hyperbole is pretty standard advertising technique but we have no control over that .

You shouldn't take adverts on TV so personally . Lighten up and try not to take everything so seriously .

If you're living in NZ then i take it you are now a NZ citizen and a yourself Kiwi ?

I have no issue with being a Kiwi. They are pretty good people in general but I cant ever support a NZL team (or at least I think I cant based on how I feel now). Not because I am trying to be funny or arrogant but because, as a rugby mad family, I was bought up to, and in the best way possible, "hate" the AB's and see them as our greatest foe. I could never erase all those years of passion and now start supporting your "enemy!"

Its easy for guys like Rooinek because they dont understand the game and they will go with the crowd or against whoever the crowd is against.

I embrace everything Kiwi in my life because it has given me opportunities SA could not but not rugby. I think I will always be Springboks and Sharks. I think thats reasonable.

To tell you the truth, I got the response from this post I was looking for. Raak old Sasuke up. He is one passionate AB! He will defend them to the death as I will the Boks and I needed some excitement at the time ;-)

One thing for sure is that Aussie rugby is envious of anything remotely similar to either of these comps. Not having such is definitely the biggest disadvantage in Australian rugby which clearly effects depth -after S15 finishes there is nothing higher than club comps - which are seriously lopsided and under funded affairs... To compare the two comps is difficult as both highlight the style of rugby these countries play - curry cup - close games due to kicks / strong defence - kiwis high scoring affairs with plenty of tries.... and not too much tackling....

Red repeat after me. The Reds and Tahs are not provincial sides but the best players from a region. That is how we won 2 Super 10 titles as well a Super 6 titles cause like NZ we couldn't take on the Saffers on a provincial to provincial basis so we had to take teams and top them up with the best to win.

Boklogic, in my post it should have said," the ITM/Currie Cup competitions" not just ITM competition. When I read it again it implied because AB were no 1 at moment then ITM comp. was better......not my intent. When I said dominant team I meant this season.

SA SR franchises are basically the CC plus Griquas. NZ ITM is their franchises devided into a lot of teams thus making them weaker.

Well there is no way to really say which is better or which is weaker...in terms of the intesity i would have to say the ITM cup has a higher tempo for me that the CC where as the CC is much more old school trench warfare.

its all about perception but for me the CC is the no1 local comp in the world as the ITM cup never really captures the imagination but that might only be because i am biased towards SA rugby

When they had all their teams in 1 division, the New Zealand tournament was stronger than what ours would be if we put all 14 unions in 1 competition. The regular beatings that the Leopards,Cavaliers,Eagles and Pumas got when the Premier Division was an 8 team competition is testuiment to that.

Additionally, many of the plaYErs who play Super Rugby in New Zealand play for the so-called smaller unions, unlike here where the entire WP team are the Stormers or the entire Blue Bulls team are the Bulls in Super Rugby.
