That is surely an area where Lambie offers more - his intelligence and accuracy when kicking out of hand allowing the Boks to play in the right areas of the field.

Uncertainty also hangs over Jantjies' defensive capabilities, and that is another area where Lambie outscores his team-mate.

The 10/12 channel simply has to be strong defensively when the Boks take on the All Blacks later this year.

After having seen Jantjies start back-to-back Tests, Lambie emerges as the favourite to start in the Rugby Championship.

Jantjies supporters will argue that the Boks won both of the matches that he started as they pulled the series back from what appeared to be certain defeat 20 minutes from time in Johannesburg.

Has he really done enough wrong to warrant losing his place?

Jantjies is the type of player you just want to have on your side because you know what he is capable of.

But at what cost?

Fortunately for Coetzee, he doesn't have to make any decisions right away.

Super Rugby still has three rounds of fixtures to go before playoffs, with the Lions almost certain to be a part of the knockouts while the Sharks are still battling their way through.

This weekend has the potential to dish up a Jantjies v Lambie showdown as the Sharks travel to Johannesburg for a massive local derby.

But there is still no word on Lambie's availability following his concussion.

This flyhalf battle will become even more complicated when Pollard returns from injury.

For now, both Lambie and Jantjies will be looking to make the most of their time on the field while Pollard is out.

For Jantjies, his first two starts were bitter/sweet.

He did enough to suggest that he can play well at this level, but probably didn't do enough to suggest that he can play consistently well at this level.

He will have more opportunities to prove himself, and guiding the Lions to Super Rugby glory would be a good start. “

I am afraid that there is an inaccuracy in the report – Jantjies played no role in the last 20 minutes of the Johannesburg test.   He was not involve in the scoring of the four trie s scored in that test.  Matter of fact the tries could have been jeopardized of he was involved.

So what are we left with – one inside pass in the first test and a cross kick in the third test, both leading to tries for the Springboks.    However, when both plays were made again later on in tests they flopped – so those two incidents was a surprise package and no team will be caught out by them in future.

I think the main problems of Jantjies are three-fold, namely –

*     his kicks at goal remains a lottery – in some games in fact questionable;

*     his poor out-of-hand kicking causing massive problems when the Irish counter-attacked from inaccurate relieving kicks – the kicks was also too short to be effective;

*     his poor defense in the channel.

Despite all the hype I saw not enough of substance to make him a Springbok pivot.   He seems to be a good flyhalf on Super Rugby level – but unable to take the step up to test level.

Jantjies is a confidence player if I have ever seen one, once he feels truly supported he plays as well as he has done for the Lions, when the contrary happens then he plays like he did for the Stormers. Lambie is a place holder, we may win things with him but I doubt very much that it will be because of him as he's not a game changer.

You can yawn as much as you like - give as any examples of Jantjies doing well in the three tests he played in other than the two instances I mentioned and then indicate whether the article quoted and my comments are incorrect. Silky hands was back but it turned out to be a pig's ear in the three tests.

Lambie is the closest South Africa have to a complete 10 at their disposal currently.Jantjies is not at the level required.

Monster, I agree. Like Sharkbok and a few others mentioned, he's a confidence player and I don't think Coetzee is the right coach to take him to the next level. In the absence of Pollard, we can still give him time to find his mojo, but I fear he won't get much better. I really hope I'm wrong, we badly need top class players of colour and he has shown potential.

There are certainly glaring issues with our backline but take into account that they didn't get quality front foot ball and was put under constant pressure. Then add to that a lack of game plan and a relatively unkown backline coach.
I did not expect any of our backline players to perform. The question needs to be asked what changes to which aspects of the game will bring forth the most improvement? Changing the players will some inpact but I do not think it is our biggest issue. I think Lambie might have performed better but he would also have received a ton of flack given the circumstances.

True Chewy, our team has a lot of homework to do in the next 2 months. There are so many issues, it's difficult to pin-point the real big problem.

Jantjies had some decent moments, but never looked like he was conducting the orchestra.....a few lonely flutes, a sad violen or two.
Lambie has never been convincing at 10. He was the starter against Japan, and Wales in 2014,

He certainly defends better than Jantjies, but is no more convincing in controlling the game.

Jantjies passes the ball...does he ignite the backline?..No. Perhaps we need the Jantjies groupies to explain.

"Jantjies had some decent moments, but never looked like he was conducting the orchestra.....a few lonely flutes, a sad violen or two." haha An Orchestra visits a town. A lady visits the show and entices the conductor back to her quarters where they have their way with each other. Afterwerds, as they lay there the woman says "I must be honest, I am nor really impressed by your performance." He replies "Had I known about the size of the hall in advance I would surely have brought the rest of the band along."

ou maaaikie you will recall how jantjes after great lions season flopped down here under quota coach Alistair. Jantjes plays to a style. The Lions style suits him very well and so do the players around him.
Hence ou maaaikie and the other oaks pondering these big mysteries playing Jantjes is all about what style you are going to adopt. Much like the loose tri selection.
If you are going to play Lions style give Jantjes a chance to prove himself or otherwise. Be sure to pick Kriel and Whitely as loosies. If Kriel is out injured pick Du Preez at 8. If you insist on having Vermuelen pick him at 7 where he always used to play before moving to 8. Duanne probably deserves a chance to prove he still has it.

Beeno - will Coetzee ever allows Jantjies to play his style of rugby?  I think not and that would be the main problem.  However, the weak and inaccurate kicking out-of-hand has nothing to do with the style of rugby played - it is a problem of Jantjies - who apparently is not good insofar as Coetzee's style of rugby is concerned.   I still think that Goosen is the best of the three potential flyhalfs without Pollard - but that will not happen.

Beeno, Jantjies so far is not a flexible player at 10, i.e. he has his style of play - which he is good at (as with the Lions) but so far he has not been able to show he can adapt to whatever style of play Coetzee has in mind (probably to old stormers game plan of all defence, kicks for territory & penalty kicks for points).
Plus he does not have decent players outside him. So it's no surprise we have this hapless performance by the backs & erratic performance from Jantjies.

Please read my post ten times and then comment. Look at what I said and then at what you posted. Then you might get a glimmer where you are going wrong!
How often must I say choose what style you want to play and then select your players.
My good friend JW can be so tiresome!!!!

Beeno, by now you should realize that I never really read your posts but simply pick out a few random words & reply. It's a way to preserve my sanity.
Sure you pick the style you want to play as a coach but that is your strategic direction. To implement it you can only select the best players that are available & as a coach you have to be a little flexible or else you will be losing for years until you finally have the players who can implement your strategy.
We could be in this situation with Jantjies, i.e. he may not fit the strategic direction that Coetzee wants to go in but he may be the best that is available (the wee Lamb is injured & CleverMike would have a heart attack if he picked a Steyn). They might be a better fit for the old stormers style of play.
Coetzee will not pick the Lions back-line so Jantjies will have to adapt. IMO he has the potential to be a test level player but the style of play Coetzee wants may not suit him. He will have to adapt. Hopefully he will occasionally be allowed to show the creative side of his ability.
JW trying to explain things to his mate Beeno without the use of pictures - a noble effort to be sure but can he achieve this - one has to remain optimistic
