Jake White is set to become the Sharks' new director of rugby, reports SIMON BORCHARDT.

SARugbymag.co.za has it on good authority that the current director of rugby, Brendan Venter, will be leaving the union after the Currie Cup. Venter is a practising medical doctor and agreed to work with the Sharks only until the end of October in any event, so White's appointment has in no way hastened his departure. It is highly unlikely that Venter will continue to consult for the Sharks as he and White both have strong personalities and would no doubt clash.

White is almost certainly going to sign a two-year contract with the Sharks that would allow him to leave the union at the end of 2015, which is when several Test nations are bound to be looking for a new head coach. White has made no secret of the fact that he wants to get back into international rugby, which is why he applied for the Wallabies position.

The Sharks would therefore want White to help develop inexperienced forwards coach Brad Macleod-Henderson and backs coach Sean Everitt over the next two years, so that one of them (most likely Macleod-Henderson) would be ready to become head coach in 2016.

White's appointment is expected to be confirmed by the Sharks within the next 10 days.

 Looks like he is going to be the coach for 2 years, and then pass it off the Macleod-Henderson

Lets face facts.   I think Smit's first choice Director of rugby was White in any event.   There was a whisper that he approached White at the time - but at that time the Super 15 was still on the go and the Brumbies still title contenders - so there is no way that Whit would have applied to the Brumbies  to be released from his contract at that crucial stage of the competition.

The crucial issue here is what the contract with Venter entailed - but as far as I am aware Venter did not practice as a medical doctor in recent times.   He was coaching rugby in England.   However, there was no indication at the time as to how long his contract with the Sharks was either.   Maybe Venter would like to start practising as a doctor at this stage - so their might be some truth in the above story.   It remains a newspaper story - so it might be some guessing at this stage.

Chances are that White may go to the Sharks as indicated - but it is better to wait and see how things develop.   Hope it is so - because the Sharks will then be serious contenders for the Super 15 trophy this coming year.

 Just read he stated that he would like to coach WP. Personally I would love if he coached the stormers and we got rid of AC, but Jake is so unreliable at the moment, I wouldnt want him near my team, but then again, if he can get the Stormers to win super rugby for the first within two years, i would be more than happy with that.
Whether he goes to the sharks or stormers, SA will be the better for it.

i thought jakes family excuse was a load of bull poo, otherwise he would have looked for any job in and around capetown.

hope rooy and other fans dont give jake too much kak, cos then he will just throw another sook and leave the sharks.

 Jake for the Stormers would be the best news since Rassie left. Sharks have taken a major step towards winning the super 15 .
White like the brilliant Rassie is a player magnet - i will not be surprised to see a few great signings for the Sharks.
Will Rooitwit will perhaps stop his inane bleatings if the sharks win the Super 15. Can anything change a closed mind.
I would also be very glad if Venter took over at the Stormers.

Sasue

Durban is about two and a half  hours flying time from Cape Town - so it is not all that difficult to visit Cape Town and his family easily.   It is not like being in Australia and taking 24 hours to get to Cape Town by air.

I think that there was another issue that may have impacted and that was his wife and whether she was able to settle in Australia.   Wives find it more difficult to settle there  than husbands.   We will never know about that one.

Be it as it may - White obviously prefer to coach an SA side and he obviously would have liked the Wallaby job.   So when he did not get it - he obviously think of pairing up with his friend John Smit at the Sharks - so that is likely the scenario.

And if that is so - the Sharks will win Super 15 next year.  My side is tops!!!!!

 @mikey,

i dont buy it, 2 and a half hours flying time plus time with his new job is still a lot of time he wont be spending with boys.

IMO, white left the brumbies to join the sharks period, the timing of smits announcement is just too much of a coincidence and white realising this played the family card.

i agree white would rather coach a saffa side, and at least this time white wont be a baby, cos he knows he aint getting hired outside of SA ever again, far too untrustworthy.

sharks to win the spXV next year, u should take another look at the chiefs 2014 squad, im picking chiefs to have an undefeated season in 2014, and once SBW signs up, im putting money on it, lolz, :oP

I will certainly have a good look at the Chefs squad when I do my fantasy selections.  Thy surely have some good players in the squad from what I read - players like SBW, Cane, Afeaki, Cruden, Anscombe  and Tomas, but they also have some dubious ones in the squad.   So lets wait till next year and see what actually happens.   I am looking forward to go all out in fantasy rugby next year.

The Chiefs back-line will be formidable especially if Money Bill does sign on the dotted line.The Sharks forward pack should however be too dominant.
We just need to get the backline attack going well like it was in 2012 with Michalak at 10. Fred Zelinga is showing early promise but the Curry Cup is now the Vodacom Cup do he has to step and deliver in SuperX.
Bambie can go back to fullback

 @mikey,

if we can get similar numbers in the fantasy spXV next year as the RC/4nats this year,  it would be awesome.

i think brycy said it best, the chiefs are a champion team, not everyone is a champion even though they have more then enough, but they all play together very well.

chiefs possible team for 2014
1 jamie macintosh
2 hika elliot
3 ben afeaki
4 micheal fitzgerald
5 brodei retallick
6 taniera latime
7 sam cane
8 liam messam
9 tarewa kerr barlow
10 aaron cruden
11 asaeli tikortuma
12 SBW
13 tim nanai williams
14 tom marshall
15 gareth anscome

16 rhys marshall
17 ben taumafuina
18 ole cruz
19 matt van leven
20 agustine pulu
21 andrew horrel
22 robbie robinson

and i couldnt find any room for the likes of nick croswell,  bundee aki and charles ngati.
its ridiculous how awsome the chiefs squad is and they are still in talks with kane thompson to come back to the chiefs for 2014.

undefeated season is possible even if they do have to play in the hardest conference.

@sharkbok,
lolz, sharks forward pack should be too dominant,

 @sharkbok,

no dave rennie is the best coach in the tournament, 2 years as coach, 2 super rugby titles, a 100% strike rate.

if u dont know who hika elliot is, ask alberts im sure he can remember the bell ringer hika gave him, lolz, :oP

jamie mackintosh aka whoppa is going to shock u, only connie is a better ball in hand prop, he does have scrummaging issues though, but rennie will fix that.

ben afeaki related to ben hur???? errrrr no, hes the prop who averages 13 tackles and 8 hit ups per game.

im not a big fan of mike, but with craig clarke gone he should be getting first crack, i call him the NZ bakkies, cos hes strong as an ox and only half as smart.
i hope ole cruz really steps up, and becomes retllicks locking partner, hes IMO already a lot smarter.

if u have seen little and heard less of latimer, then its no wonder u think the sharks forwards will be dominant, cos theres very little u do know about the chiefs forward pack.
